So, we are relying on Rwanda being honest about the amount of refugees still there too? What could possibly go wrong?

Rwanda have stitched the UK up like a kipper - and they aren't so dumb as to not see the irony in that statement. The UK ha basically fallen for a pretty unsophisticated version of the Nigerian Prince scam emails that used to do the rounds.

Yes. Rwanda must be laughing their heads off at us (along with rest of the world)
Both shameful and stupid. I've just had someone say to me, 'but none of the Tories wanted Brexit at all'(!) (person voted yes & still think it's a Good Thing)

RafaistheKingofClay · 30/04/2024 10:40

The other thing about the missing asylum seekers is that they were trying to detain 5,700. Rwanda haven’t agreed to take anywhere near that many. Were they just planning to detain them indefinitely? I know the British value of rule of law doesn’t apply to Tory MPs but surely that’s not legal.

I think it can be. There will be a point when not, but the thing is that if you do not comply with your bail (yea they are bailed out of detention) then this is a reason to further detain you. Honestly I suspect many are trying to leave the UK because the penalty now for not turning up will be harsh. If Rwanda works it will be expanded.

LittleBowSheep · 30/04/2024 10:45

Was the authority to detain immigrants included in the Rwanda Act? I don't understand where the power to detain comes from. Where are they being held? Do they have ant sort of freedom or are they now prisoners? Too many unknowns.

RafaistheKingofClay · 30/04/2024 11:05

Yes, they can probably detain the 62% they’ve lost if they find them. But I’m not sure you can detain asylum seekers just for being asylum seekers. I thought that was limited to those who’ve had their claim turned down and are about to be deported.

Difficult to argue that applies to nearly 6000 asylum seekers when there is no plan and Rwanda have only agreed to take 200.
Mind you it’s probably some sort of pesky foreign human rights thing so we can ignore it.

bombastix · 30/04/2024 11:19

It's a long held power since 2002. Much used so nothing exceptional really

Meanwhile. not content with not dealing with Rwanda, Rish! is now picking fights with Vietnam.

As someone who wept salt tears at the plight of the Cambodian boat people, this upsets me more than it should.

I remember the wave of sympathy in my childhood. The rhetoric has changed so spitefully. I'm sure it was very infantilising and othering but at least the media framing was of pity and compassion. (presumably because Communism and Cold War).

And Cambodia was illegally and repeated bombed by the US

There are some modern parallels

What is the value of an agreement between two governments that don't believe in the rule of law?

New homelessness numbers in England out today and the headline is:

Everything going in the wrong direction.

  • Record high numbers assessed as homeless/ threatened with homelessness over the last year.
  • Record high numbers in temporary accom, including numbers of kids.

Rish! has a plan for that

Sounds like a lovely safe country.

In countries around the world, including in the UK, criminals are not allowed to run for office, Rwanda is no different.”

Hmm. I think we’ve decided we’re probably ok with that.

It’s OK, we haven’t lost the asylum seekers. We’re just not in contact with them.

Nice of Victoria Atkins to try and make things better by saying that the Home Office is used to not being in contact with asylum seekers.

The grounded Rwanda deportation flight EC-LZO Boeing 767 at Boscombe Down Air Base, on June 14, 2022 in Boscombe Down. The flight taking asylum seekers from the UK to Rwanda has been grounded at the last minute after intervention of the European Court...

Government denies losing track of likely Rwanda deportees

Some asylum seekers earmarked for Rwanda could abscond before they are detained, the Home Office admits.

I'm mildly surprised they haven't blamed Labour yet.

RafaistheKingofClay · 30/04/2024 15:10

There is time for it still to be Jeremy Corbyn’s fault.

Well... it's not new problem. Perhaps it's new to Victoria but still, not new

RafaistheKingofClay · 30/04/2024 15:54

I think everything’s new to Victoria. Not sure she’s the sharpest tool in the box.

DuncinToffee · 30/04/2024 16:06

That will be a yes then

Ugly moment for the Tory Chairman on whether they've accepted millions more from Frank Hester AFTER scandalous comments surfaced.

RH: "I've got no problem answering questions on this."
JC: "Well, answer them then."
RH: "Any donations will be declared normally in due course."

Edit for those not on twitter that JC is Jo Coburn and this was on BBC politics live

All of Sunak’s posts on the NI cut and one on the PIP changes have been community noted. Someone out there is doing good work.
