Today 1 in 6 available Crown Courts
shut
we don’t have enough judges
Human cost:
Only last Friday a large regional Crown Court told all parties a “fixture will be broken” due today
Not just any last minute hearing postponement
It’s a trial for
“long-ago-fixed 3-handed murder”
“we are informed the fixture will be broken because there is no judge to try it and on the face of it no court either. Witnesses, defendants, solicitors, Counsel etc., as we all know are irrelevant…”

Totally off topic but these sorts of delays are just terrible for all involved.
And I see the Times is running an article about law and order breaking down - much of it blaming the police. But they do acknowledge that if charge rates increase the courts can't cope and our prisons are already full.
Criminal justice budgets are not protected. We lost 20,000 experienced officers during austerity and cut administrative staff (whilst increasing admin needs).
It ends with the line "If you go out on a blue-light response shift, in most forces now the majority of officers will have less than 3 years experience. It feels incredibly fragile."
