Labour's plan for the railways seems to me to be pragmatic and sensible. I am not of the view that nationalisation is always the answer, but in the case of the railways what is happening at the moment, is that the government is paying the Italian, German and other nationalised railways to run ours badly so that they can make a profit from us that they re-invest in their own railways not ours. (see also EDF). Taking back into government ownership when each franchise comes to an end seems to be a cost efficient way of addressing the biggest flaw in the current system which is the disconnect between the trains and the tracks.

I also note that sometimes I get Welsh trains which are nationalised and they seem to work at least as well as the franchised ones.

Well but did anyone notice the commitment given to renationalise the railways. Very good news from Labour. It should save a lot of money otherwise being stuffed into shareholders pockets.

Yes! I think Starmer is now feeling able to be a bit bolder. And Labour can announce plans like this safe in the knowledge that the Tories won't nick them.

More of this please. Nationalising the water companies would be a big vote winner.

L1ttledrummergirl · 25/04/2024 08:42

But Jeremy Corbyn. But Angela Raynor.

To answer pp above re Sunak driving- he didn't know how to fill a car with, and pay for petrol, yet this lot thought he was smart enough to run a country.

PMQs yesterday, friendly questions were all bigging up their mayoral candidates whilst jiving about Labour. It was desperate, and would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

Don't be silly @JessS1990 Every fule knows that in Labour run Wales we all get around on pit ponies. Well the wealthy do.

I was highly entertained last summer to be able to get to and from home to a conference in Liverpool by train on a day when there were rail strikes, because I could get on nationalised trains that weren't on strike.

bombastix · 25/04/2024 08:48

Oh a Molesworth ref. I mean this thread is now officially wizzo

IClaudine · 25/04/2024 08:49

Notonthestairs it did work. Thanks.

Now wait for the Tories to start chirping about how bad British Rail was.

I can't really picture any PM driving a car? Boris on a bike, and running. Cameron walking.

Johnson was pictured driving some old banger full of crap on various occassions

I've just come back from visiting a family member in Sweden. Saturday we got the bus from the outskirts of Uppsala, a 70km train journey to Stockholm, the return added a tram to Central station from the museum area. My total spend on fares was less than £8.
Back home I live a similar train ride to London. There are only 5 buses a say to the town centre from where I live and none go to the train station. I would pay more than that total fare just for parking at the station.

Zonder · 25/04/2024 08:04

Wow really? And on it goes. I guess they've finally run out of things to say about but Angela Rayner.

Telegraph is going on about her buying a 4 bed house in her constituency for £375k, a year after she became a MP Confused

Is it illegal to buy a house now?

Notonthestairs · 25/04/2024 09:07

"Written by Will Bolton and Investigations Team "

Do you think they'll also investigate how certain other Tory MOs have become millionaires over the last 5 years?

IClaudine · 25/04/2024 09:08

People with regional accents are not allowed to buy 4 bed houses.

I hope it is not detached, surely that is an arrestable offence?

The problem with nationalisation is Tory governments run public services down. Look at the state of the health services (or British Rail prior to them being privatized).

But when they're privatized it's all just run for profit and the customers pay more and more (rail fares/energy bills). It's a massive con.

fabio12 · 25/04/2024 09:18

@IClaudine yes nationalising the water companies would win so many votes! I think the sewage pollution is something the public have been very shocked that came true from Project Fear.

I didn't mean to derail to JC and 2016 before, just to show that if you start calling one side an idiot and they get lots of people voting for them it seems that the other side put forth a candidate of equal calibre. Personally I think the country would have seen a more effective change with JC but that is by the by now.

I don't think Sunak would venture into a car with the ULEZ mob roaming the streets of London...he would be an instant target.

Finally, a damning light shone on the state of children's MH in UK https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-68884005

If we need to stop young people being so ill they can't work it really doesn't take a genius to see it's correlated with use of smartphones, lack of laws and guidance from the govt and the dismantling of MH services and children's activity centres (Sure Start) at the same time. Where are these laws on vaping?

England child alcohol use tops global chart, finds WHO report

The World Health Organization also finds higher rates of drinking and vaping among teenage girls.

SerendipityJane · 25/04/2024 09:22

Given that Sunak managed to break the law (with unerring precision) in a car without driving, I think it's best he's not behind the wheel.

HannibalHeyes · 24/04/2024 20:40

As it was with Brexit...

AIs take on a similar theme. I tried to reproduce a cartoon from 40 years ago.

It's very clear proof that "AI" (and remember children it really is just clever pattern matching) doesn't understand. Which is a shame as you can't but anything without it these days.

Loving it. She’s going to spontaneously combust before the election. 😂

Starmer and Corbyn together? Are they holding hands or is it just a bit of Tory product placement? Things are desperate. It must be nearly time to resurrect Michael Foot and his 'disrespectful' donkey jacket. Pinko!

I only managed to get half way down the first page to where Angela Rayner was accused of lacking 'interlect'. I couldn't face reading any more of it after that.
