Ukrainian house guest doesn't want to leave!

reallyneedmoresleep · 20/04/2024 13:59

We've had a Ukrainian house guest for the last six months via the Homes for Ukraine scheme. When she came to live with us, we said it would be for a six month period and at the last welfare check we confirmed that she would need to move out by mid-May.
She doesn't want to leave. She has asked several times if she can stay, we have said no. She says our house is much nicer than where she can afford to move to.

I have visited estate agents with her who advise that to rent privately, she either needs a guarantor (we are not prepared to do this) or to pay six month's rent plus the deposit up front. She cannot afford this.

What do we do?

I know the situation in Ukraine is appallling and I am writing from a position of immense priveledge but we have found it really difficult having someone else in our home. She is not an easy person to be around, does not work, has refused all offers to be taken to support groups and frequently just hangs around us when we are in the house when we are trying to work or just to chill. Our son is home from uni in a couple of weeks and we need the room back.

There has been radio silence from the council Homes for Ukraine scheme.
How can I help her to move on?

Their fear of a Russian invasion seems totally overblown, sorry. Does anyone seriously believe Russian tanks are going to roll through? Finland does have some risk due to the border but not fucking Sweden.

Are you familiar with Kaliningrad?

This may have some relevance to concerns of Sweden and borders.

RedToothBrush · 23/04/2024 21:28

Here is another clue:
Kaliningrad is still of great strategic importance to Moscow. It houses the Russian Baltic Fleet at the port of Baltiysk and is the country's only ice-free European port.

Also google: 'what launches nuclear missiles?' and think about why this might be relevant to the above, with the use of a map.

Is this rocket science?

blueandsad · 23/04/2024 21:53

the far right/Daily Mail readers is over half the populations in a bad election year ... ( Tories + Reform + Brexit hardliners ) ... which is why small boats plays so well to a malleable electorate that are still only emerging from the hangover from Empire

blueandsad · 23/04/2024 22:01

The feared scenario would be what Russia did to East Ukraine in March- September 2014 , hybrid and proxy warfare ending in outright conflict from 2014 to present,. Organising rebel armies in Donetsk and arming them directly , shooting down airliners with BUK , sending in " aid 2 convoys and then thousands of Russians ( professional soldiers ) to massive battles like Debaltseve ... who they claimed " were simply on holiday in Donbas " when killed or captured . Russia will try these hybrid methods in Daugavpils or other ..... and test NATO resolve before annexing / invading Latvia or Estonia .

blueandsad · 23/04/2024 22:03

When NATO backs off from a nuclear escalation , Russia will quickly occupy the Baltics - Game Over .

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 23/04/2024 22:05

It's no use trying to tell people these things; for a lot of people warning them didn't work ninety years ago, either, and there are none so blind as those who do not want to see.

I don't think Russia will invade Western Europe but you're right to mention Kaliningrad.

The 'Suwałki Gap' is the thing to google if you want to a) have nightmares about what a Russian invasion- improbable as it is of NATO countries- might look like and b) want to learn about military strategy!

It's the warm water port issue that makes me wonder about Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia

I don't pretend to know Russia's intentions, but if they could afford to invade I can see the appeal of seizing those

We live in one of the richest countries in the world. Of course the Tories could solve the small boats by launching safe routes and processing centres in France.
But they'd rather appeal to the far right/Daily Mail readers by putting on flights to Rwanda- trading in human misery as a last ditch attempt to win the election.

How do you know that this would be an easy solution? Why do you think it hasn’t been done? Do you think France would be agreeable to use just handing the issue over to them?

Russia has already been committing hybrid warfare on the Finnish border (as well as the usual hybrid warfare of GPS jamming and cyber attacks that have intensified of late)

I'm far from a doom monger but there is very little I'd put past Putin, under the right circumstances, the best indicator of future behaviour being past behaviour and all that. I think the Finns and the Swedes perhaps agree.

blueandsad · 26/04/2024 15:59

I'd put NOTHING at all past Putin and the Russian state - however outlandish it may seem ..... as a minor sideline : infiltrating , influencing internet platforms , and numerous propaganda accounts with relation to mumsnet . There really is no limit to how far Russian fascism will go in attacking Ukraine and the West . For example , today several ( very ) young men in London were convicted of arson attacks on a English-ukrainian delivery service warehouse . " Britons (20) charged with aiding Russia and planning arson against Ukraine-linked business in UK " . If you think that the Russian state is not already engaged in over-running The Guardian Comments , Facebook , CountryLife , mumsnetty and other internet forums ..... the W.I ?

blueandsad · 26/04/2024 16:00

No joke ... you're never more than a few blocks away from a russkii rat .

So Ukraine is at war with Russia, people have put Ukrainians up in thier homes and some are being difficult to dislodge and yet Ukraine can still be in the gymnastics and most probley the Olympics seems strange when you would think these young athletic men should be fighting for thier country like everyone else or have I missed something and winning a gold medal helps the war in some way.

Yep, you have definitely missed something. Ever heard of morale boosting?

Not quite sure what the link is between Ukrainian refugees and the Olympics, but yes Ukraine have every right to be there.
They have been invaded by a ruthless imperialistic neighbour using despicable methods such as rape, torture, blanket bombing, chemical weapons, targeting civilians, double tap bombings to target rescue workers, destroying infrastructure such as energy plants & dams (with catastrophic environmental consequences) and so on.
Are you suggesting because of this they should forfeit their place at the Olympics? As it is many of their athletes have been killed or injured in a war they didn't start but are forced to fight in to defend their freedom and independence.
Russia and Belarus however should not be able to compete in any international competitions, even under neutral flags, until those countries stop their war of aggression and acquisition.

Ukraine isnt "at war" with russia

Ukraine is defending itself from murdering savages who have invaded their country

More than 1 000 000 men from Ukraine were already in W Europe when the war started : 1) UK is extremely unlikely to extradite them

2) the UK economy would suffer a massive hit if 100 000 working Ukrainians left the country - it's not as if we are doing very well right now ( in spite of the Tories' rabid racism and swivel-eyed phobias about "illegals" ) ( How exactly CAN an asylum seeker be " illegal" under the Convention ? )

I had the same problems but mine was as mother and 27 year old daughter, they did not spend a penny they took all the food from my fridge and freezer in the end I kept all food in the boot of my car, they costs me thousands in damages to mattresses, curtains and carpets, I was also missing money I had to hide my purse I could not leave it anywhere. Then I had enough, I phoned the council and told them they have one hour to get them out I am putting them and their belongings out on the street the council sent a taki before the hour was up. They were put into a hostel where they had to be out between 8am-4.30 sleeping in a dormitory of 20 people surprise surprise they went back to Ukraine after the council refused to give them a house. They are still there, Never once during the 6 months did they ever say please or thankyou, They treated it as a free holiday

Thatsthewayitisnt · 04/05/2024 20:56

It was obvious that these sorts of problems would arise. I feel very sorry for those who had such difficult experiences but honestly, what else was likely to happen?
