It is horrifying. Being “openly Jewish” isn’t a “provocation”. If it’s not safe for Jewish people to be near their protests then the protests need to be banned, not Jewish people threatened with arrest for existing!

we have seen far too much of this, there are other examples of Jewish people being removed and people rightly naming Hamas as a terrorist group being arrested.

British Jews need to be safe and feel safe now. It’s a disgrace and an embarrassment

LibbyLemoncake · 19/04/2024 23:42

Our police are a disgrace.
If they think this man is going to be in danger by crossing the road because of what he looks like then it is literally their job to stop the perpetrators who may attack him, not stop an innocent man from walking around for God’s sake.

AcheyBalzac · 19/04/2024 23:45

This is bonkers. Awful.

Damnyourheadshoulderskneesandtoes · 19/04/2024 23:45

Wow Shock the statement too trying to justify it Confused so what if Jewish people want to turn up to a protest as a counter protest, that's incredibly common at all kinds of protest and part of our democratic right in this country. The police just can't go around threatening to arrest people because they haven't got the manpower to police these huge marches.

RadoxMoon · 19/04/2024 23:45

This is appalling but sadly unsurprising.

The Met are not a competent police force.

whiteroseredrose · 19/04/2024 23:55

Good grief. That sums it up.

Elleherd · 20/04/2024 00:36

Although there is a little more behind the post synagogue stroll, (for which I don't blame him and appreciate his reasons) this is beyond outrageous.
(I thought about posting on Jewish MN to say being openly Jewish or covertly Jewish, is your absolute right, but wasn't sure it was helpful.)

So I'm saying it here: please be openly Jewish, or as I am, openly what ever ethnicity or religion you happen to be.

How dare the MET suggest being "openly" of one's faith or ethnicity at the 'wrong' moment' be an issue? It isn't a dirty little secret, and 'we' shouldn't have to hide who 'we' are because another group are infuriated by the existence of others. It's either safe to exist 'openly' in multi cultural London, or it isn't.

A long, long, old time ago (I hope others may be able to place and name this) in London, I think alongside the Thames (?) reasonably near parliament (?) there was a protest about police racist behavior, and a lot of police lined up to control protestors, when Black protesters spotted a Black officer in the police ranks. The cry of "Babylon!" went up. Hundreds against one man. One man who dared to exist at the wrong moment.

From my POV if police are a necessary evil, lets have a police force that represents us all.

So although I was actually good with the protest, I was also impressed with the police at that moment. Because, they closed ranks and automatically protected that Black officer whose sheer presence was infuriating protestors. Because he had as much right to be there as the protesters did. Once upon a time, many years ago, this was the Met...

Nothingandnobody · 20/04/2024 02:16

Gosh. That's dispicable. Imagine if they'd done that for being 'openly' Sikh, Christian, Muslim,Hindu...

RetroDesigned · 20/04/2024 03:45

There's more information around this, posted on the conflict in the middle East board - on the marches thread, for those of you who are interested.

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 20/04/2024 05:51

The first statement from the Met, since deleted, said that there was a "trend" of people attending the marches to be provocative. Cue criticism from people, Jewish or not, that to walk the street and happen upon a protest whilst Jewish or "looking Jewish" sounds a bit dodgy to most.

So they put out a second shorter statement saying the first statement was dodgy, cue insincere apologies, and saying it was "regrettable".

They are the stupidest, most racist people. Honestly.

Sorry, but if anyone Jewish on here hasn't seen that thread, then I don't recommend it in the slightest. Or at least put a hard hat on and brace yourself for some serous Jew-baiting and antisemitism minimisation.

Supersimkin2 · 20/04/2024 09:46

Hideous. And wicked.

Lovethatforyouhun · 20/04/2024 09:49

I think the policeman should tell him to leave as its a march full of frothing, idiot, violent twats!

100%

LakeTiticaca · 20/04/2024 10:02

I can't believe the way this country has gone. It seems every day the ordinary man/woman on the street loses more of their freedom to walk where they want, wear what they want and worship freely,
Seemingly to appease other groups who object to our freedoms. I'm over 60 now and glad I've only got about 20 year max left but I am terrified for my grandchildren

OrlandointheWilderness · 20/04/2024 10:12

What the fuck!! How on earth have we got to a state where anyone thinks that is acceptable?!?

dimllaishebiaith · 20/04/2024 10:36

Lovethatforyouhun · 20/04/2024 09:49

I think the policeman should tell him to leave as its a march full of frothing, idiot, violent twats!

But the Police Officer didnt just ask him to leave. He also told him if he stayed that he would be arrested because he looked "openly Jewish" and that might incite violence

Its rather like arresting women in short skirts to stop them from being raped...

This.

We are in real trouble in London with the Met. I don't know anyone who trusts them. My adult DD has told me that she wouldn't ask them for help or report a crime to them unless she had no option. Her boyfriend has been the victim of stop and search at least half a dozen times in the last 3 years.

And the awful racist, misogynistic stuff that is reported, the lack of any sort of intelligent leadership, the egotistical people (mostly men) who appear to be attracted to a career in the Met. It's scary.

Emotionalsupporthamster · 20/04/2024 10:46

FFS this is an absolute disgrace.

LlynTegid · 20/04/2024 10:49

I should be shocked, but this is the Metropolitan Police.

Sure, if you want to hear a bunch of conspiracy theories about how it's actually his fault.

My apologies. I posted this is the middle of the night, I should have prewarned others that some of the posts aren't pleasant. It's good that people are gaining awareness of what is happening on the streets right now.

Encyclopediaofnonsense · 20/04/2024 12:50

If being openly following a religion near a group of people is going to provoke a riot then the group of people need policing, not the individual.
