I was on a thread just after the retaliation started and the racist vitriol spewed by a lot of people on that thread shocked me and made my mind up to leave the Uk.

Seeing people’s thoughts written down with no worries about censorship was worrying. Subsequent marches and protests and the uneducated Metropolitan Police comments etc make me certain I don’t want my family and I to live in this country any longer than I have to.
Gradually over the last few months the things that tie me to the UK are gradually disappearing and reasons to leave are getting stronger and stronger

fromaytobe · 20/04/2024 13:25

I'm appalled, quite frankly. No police officer should be judging someone by their appearance.

If it’s not safe for Jewish people to be near their protests then the protests need to be banned, not Jewish people threatened with arrest for existing!

100%

Exactly.

Bluescissorsbluepen · 20/04/2024 13:39

I don’t know what goes through peoples head. In the eye of the world, in a huge diverse capital city to justify their (the met) actions by saying they (the Jewish man) looked wrong. I would have expected nothing but apologies from the Met saying the police officer didn’t speak for them, had been suspended and explaining the law as it stands (you can exist anywhere as you are so long as it doesn’t breach any other law). But nope, openly Jewish is and issue. And yes the she was asking for it being drunk in a short skirt late at night comparison is almost to bloody easy. Disgusting.

Encyclopediaofnonsense · 20/04/2024 13:41

I'm not Jewish but I'm disgusted by the rise in how acceptable it is to be antisemitic in this country.

Smallyeti · 20/04/2024 13:57

I’m glad my DPs and DGPs are no longer alive at this time. They were always frightened about being identified or targeted for being Jewish and for my DPs there was nowhere near the risks there are now, for the last half of their lives anyhow.

I am 63, and I’ve never felt so fearful in my life. I don’t go into the city centre at weekends because of the hostile atmosphere around the protestes. I feel like somehow I’m personally implicit in the deaths of thousands of innocents, just by being Jewish. I am an atheist but 100% Orthodox Jewish by ethnicity. I despise Hamas, and Netanyahu is a disaster for Israel. But I have nothing to do with this hellish conflict. No one should be accused of being ‘openly’ Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, Christian etc. The Met need disbanding. It’s a disgrace.

Smallyeti · 20/04/2024 13:58

And thank you for those of you on here who aren’t Jewish for calling this out. It means a lot .

There's more information around this, posted on the conflict in the middle East board - on the marches thread, for those of you who are interested.

that will be where people blame this man for being visibly Jewish. You anti-semites disgust me.

As the demographics of this country change, I can't see life getting any easier for Jewish people, sadly.

This sketch was exactly what popped into my head when I saw this news.

ETA: It must be about 40 years old! The Met still haven't learned.

Sorry, I posted the link in the middle of the night, half asleep! I am as far away from anti Semitic as you can get! I abhor what's being allowed to happen in plain sight and the more people start to openly condemn it, then hopefully something can be done about it.

100%

This.

Either these marches are peaceful or they're not. This kinda proves that we are allowing violent, intimidating anti-Semites March freely on our streets on a regular basis. I'm appalled.

Maireas · 20/04/2024 14:24

I was so shocked when I read this, I had to read it twice, because I honestly thought it must have been a mistake.
It is profoundly worrying that Jewish people no longer feel safe in our communities, and it's up to us non Jews to call this out and challenge antisemitism.
I have been very worried by certain things locally, and have contacted my MP.

In that case my sincere apologies!

SerendipityJane · 20/04/2024 14:29

I made a point elsewhere about how during the Yorkshire Ripper terror, the police were advising women to stay inside.

It's a point of pride my DM marched in a protest saying the police should lock the men up so women could go about their lives safely.

Telling victims it's their fault is the cowardice that waves fascism into society.

I went on those Reclaim the Night marches.
I was a teenager and it was a turning point for me in terms if feminism and activism.

SerendipityJane · 20/04/2024 14:34

If this was a film, a coterie of protesters would have stepped up to protect anyone who wanted to cross the protest.

Maireas · 20/04/2024 14:35

Plus there was a Met police officer recently patronising a woman who complained about a swastika on display at one of these marches. It's not an isolated incident.

Yes, that would have been a good thing to do. Instead of which, I understand he was verbally abused.

Because the protesters were cowards and scared of their own. Not a great situation.

(There's a YT clip of the lead singer of the (very metal !!!!) band Disturbed stopping a concert and comforting a girl who is scared by the flash-bangs. It's quite something-in-my-eye. But he tells the crowd that if you are strong it's because God wants you to protect the weak.

It's all the more powerful because it's spontaneous.)

Exactly this. I think we have to nip it in the bud so to speak before the silent majority become the silent minority, but how?
