New thread. I took the liberty - the old one was at 999!

Oooh! DF is coming up next weekend - that has given me an idea!!

It cracked my dad up. I held it at arm’s length too. Definitely worth it if he’d see the funny side.

Have we discussed the fact the Rwanda is probably on the brink of a war with DRC

Again ?

One of the more vivid memories I have was when Air France went on strike in 93, and I had to get a substitute flight to Nairobi on Sabena. No one mentioned (and it was absent the manifest) that the plane would - very briefly - touch down in Kigali. When it did one person embarked while it was surrounded by jeeps with soldiers who my friend assured me was carrying loaded machine guns.

I think we know what happened in 1994

DuncinToffee · 21/04/2024 19:43

There is a presidential election in Rwanda soon as well

IClaudine · 21/04/2024 19:51

I love the DF tong teasing. My DF and I didn't see eye to eye about everything (though he went from Tory to Labour in his older years) and we used to enjoy winding each other up. I do miss him.

IClaudine · 21/04/2024 19:53

Aren't they already looking for alternative third countries? Is that because they know Rwanda could become unstable very fast?

Saucery · 21/04/2024 19:59

Hoping to find a country airlines will agree to fly people to. I don’t think it’s occurred to them that it’s the whole ethos of dumping asylum seekers on other countries for money that the airlines object to.

Or that airlines are commercial businesses whose success depends on their reputation.

I'd like a new government to pursue not just Covid fraud, but all the corrupt and other practices of Tory MPs that have taken place.

So would I, the scale of corruption & fraud etc from this lot is mind blowing.
Blossom 💐
also Yy the benefit threads heartening quite a bit of pushback.

Notonthestairs · 21/04/2024 20:14

I hadn't read anything about what was happening in Rwanda - so I had to google.
Decent explainer (I think) from Bloomberg

💐 Mine too. He’d be horrified to see what’s happened to the country he fought for.

Rwanda is taking in a huge influx of refugees for many months now, always surprised me the Tories didn't know this.... it looks like the Rwanda has really played the UK Govt for 100s of millions.

Have we discussed the fact the Rwanda is probably on the brink of a war with DRC. I know we’ve passed a law to say things are safe even if they aren’t, but I think even this government might draw the line at sending people to a literal war zone.

Or I hope they would.

You give Sunak and Co much more credit than they deserve on this one.

They say it's safe so we must ignore the evidence of bombs dropping because they passed a law saying it's safe. A plane full of of people could be shot down and they'd still say it was safe.

Orwellian.

😂🙈 God you’re all so clueless it’s embarrassing. No wonder Labour are in their current pitiful position.

Comedy is alive and well.

cakeorwine · 21/04/2024 20:40

I am looking forward to someone asking Sunak if he still believes that Rwanda is a safe country if they are at war.

I wonder if he's read Orwell?

BIossomtoes · 21/04/2024 20:50

Perhaps safe means something different in Toryworld.

Exciting line-up

Channel 4 becomes the first broadcaster to announce its plans for coverage of the General Election night with Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Emily Maitlis, Alastair Campbell, Rory Stewart, Cathy Newman and Clare Balding ensuring C4 will be the home of the best analysis and coverage

bombastix · 21/04/2024 20:58

There is an obvious issue with the actual legality of flights to Rwanda even if you use military pilots. It seems very unlikely to happen.

Well, that's my decision made right there. In 1997 I had to make do with BBC because we couldn't receive C4 in the Netherlands.

bombastix · 21/04/2024 21:13

Was Boris Johnson going to do this for GB News? I mean that sounds like an absolute car crash of an idea, but sort of grimly fascinating as the old hack makes up appalling lies about all his old colleagues as they lose their seats....

RafaistheKingofClay · 21/04/2024 21:14

That looks like a good line up.

Apologies to those not on Twitter, not sure if this video exists elsewhere. We might need to find these Question time audience members from the mid 2000s and see if they think the Tories have improved their experience of getting a GP appointment.

If he does, shall we have a competition to see who amoung us can last the longest without breaking the TV?

I almost think I would watch that. Just for the car crash.
