New thread. I took the liberty - the old one was at 999!

Just noticed the italics. Well done, the effect is vivid.

Ooh. More sneering!

They sacked her for being offensive
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/media/greenslade/2013/jan/14/theobserver-transgender

Then she got sacked by the telegraph for being offensive

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/julie-burchill-telegraph-lilibet-tweet-b1861989.html

The problem could be how she expresses her views, rather than the views themselves?

I think so.

Actually that one has a misprint, many others available!

Edited

Sure it wasn't a subtle nod to the Grauniad ?

Piggywaspushed · 21/04/2024 15:03

Italics are a convention for quoting.

Piggywaspushed · 21/04/2024 15:06

Not at all. A factual observation from a child’s mind (I would’ve been <18yrs old).

When I was 16 or 17 I was capable of learning the names of writers, presenters and journalists.

Although , must admit , I was probably rather more familiar with Noel Edmonds and Simon Mayo.

Evenstar · 21/04/2024 15:07

@SerendipityJane you could be right! I haven’t had a print copy of the Guardian for years, but remember the long column of corrections that used to be inside

TooBigForMyBoots · 21/04/2024 15:09

Piggywaspushed · 21/04/2024 13:36

Let us not forget when the Daily Mail , not scared to be forthright, printed the faces of Stephen Lawrence's killers. Their one fine moment.

But then they went and hacked Baroness Doreen Lawrence's phone. Scum!Angry

Yes, the phone hacking stuff is an example of their power and corruption. And some of those people still exercise enormous influence.

Sometimes yes. In this case it was not a quotation.

Gosh you are clever!

I’m talking 8+ if that helps. By 16 I wasn’t reading the newspaper much. Maybe on Saturdays if The Weekend had something eye catching.

I was quoting the word sneer and its various forms, as you well know.

If you could stop patronising me that'd be grand.

pointythings · 21/04/2024 15:38

I think that people who live in glass houses should not throw stones - hairy bollocks, anyone?

It's the Tory way: Do as I say, not as I do. See also law breaking, tax evasion, lying, partying while people died and grieved alone.

Zero self awareness.🤷‍♀️

NEW: Former Tory MP Mark Menzies confirms that he will not be standing again at the general election.

CCHQ says it cannot conclude that there had been a misuse of Tory party funds.

Eh? No misuse? Seems odd.

Find it staggering he can hang on for the next 6/7 months to be honest.

Zonder · 21/04/2024 15:50

I can cope with the spelling mistake but sadly I find tofu disgusting. I wish she had used lentils instead of tofu in her outburst.

bombastix · 21/04/2024 15:51

All we are saying is give quiche a chance

Oh dear lord. This is like "there weren't any parties" isn't it.
Ridiculous. They should throw the book at him. Speaks volumes about their attitude to fraud.

Notonthestairs · 21/04/2024 15:51

If he's not misused funds why is he stepping down??

I'd like a new government to pursue not just Covid fraud, but all the corrupt and other practices of Tory MPs that have taken place.

Well he was going to become a former MP then anyway, so its hardly news is it?

DuncinToffee · 21/04/2024 16:03

When I first arrived in the UK, I bought a News of the World, thinking it would be as the title suggested

My FIL also told me which rag not to buy ever.

Hugh Grant's explanation on why he settled his privacy claim with the Murdoch's NGN is very revealing.

Can you point me to where I can read about this @DuncinToffee ? I heard the headline and meant to find out why but forgot about it until now.

RafaistheKingofClay · 21/04/2024 16:14

Perhaps that use of Tory funds is permitted under party rules. It would explain a lot tbh.

bombastix · 21/04/2024 16:15

Oh MM, it's pretty obvious he would like all the financial benefits to continue and presumably knows a fair bit about his former colleagues who will be in no hurry to discipline him.

Westminster is a small place. There are always a little stack of these stories so I assume he is not the last problem the Tory Party have.
