New thread. I took the liberty - the old one was at 999!

Oh come on, notonthestairs, the poor things have to earn a crust somehow!

Notonthestairs · 14/04/2024 22:29

I'd suggest we pay not to hear from them again. But I think we've paid enough already.

TooBigForMyBoots · 15/04/2024 01:48

Cheers for the thread @BIossomtoes.Thanks

The scale of the Rwanda scheme is now very different to the large-scale and systematic removals originally promised by ministers

A civil servant told me efforts are geared towards a single flight as “proof of concept”, calling it an “election vanity scam”

I don't have a subscription to the Independent so can't read this article.

Looks like we've spent an awful lot of time & money for a single flight.

BIossomtoes · 15/04/2024 08:48

The latest news is they’re planning to spend £5 billion on Rwanda. It’s beyond me how we’ve allowed a political system to develop that allows that kind of expenditure on something that’s never appeared in a manifesto or been subject to voter approval. When I think about what that kind of money could achieve I want to weep.

I would consider it worth every penny if we could decide for ourselves who gets to go on the flight Sunak and Braverman for starters.

Notonthestairs · 15/04/2024 09:01

£5 billion? Bloody hell, we seem to have money to burn.

Paid by Ministerial Direction because there isn't the evidence to show that it offers value for money.

DuncinToffee · 15/04/2024 09:02

Matt Dathan from the Times

Excl: Britain has entered talks to replicate the Rwanda migrant deportation scheme with Armenia, Ivory Coast, Costa Rica and Botswana.

Leaked documents reveal the government’s extensive search for additional third country deals:

Negotiations are on hold until the Rwanda scheme is up and running but government hopes to resume them once the first flights off the ground.

A list of African countries including Cape Verde, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Angola and Sierra Leone were put on a reserve list that would be approached if other targets failed.

Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Brazil & Columbia were also approached

But Morocco, Tunisia, Namibia & The Gambia “explicitly declined” to enter technical discussions

The FCDO warned the Home Office not to push further with these countries and to expect a "sharp rebuff" if they tried

Eight countries were ruled out by officials as non-starters for various reasons (Kenya, Uruguay, Benin, Djibouti, Gabon, Liberia, Azerbaijan, Guinea-Bissau, Suriname and Belize)

Kenya previously rejected migration deals with the UK due to concerns over “a new form of colonialism”.

Notonthestairs · 15/04/2024 09:15

So we'd be throwing more money at other countries?
They've lost their minds.

DuncinToffee · 15/04/2024 09:24

The Rwanda bill is back in the Commons this week.

Edited to say, it's back on the agenda today

Thanks for the thread!
Heard the new Weetabix advertisement on the radio today and thought it was good - quick google and have to agree https://creative.salon/articles/work/weetabix-discovery-bbh

How much social housing could we have built with £5bn? It seems there is a magic money tree when it comes to trying to appeal to xenohobes.

Maybe a MNetter could take the opportunity to personally deliver some manure?

Thank you for the new thread.

Loving the kitty pics.

Notonthestairs · 15/04/2024 13:29

I see Truss hasn't ruled out a second run at leadership. She has "unfinished business".
Music to Tufton Street's ears perhaps.
Pretty terrifying for everyone else.

DuncinToffee · 15/04/2024 14:42

She also wants Trump back as president, the orange one who is in NY Criminal Court today

I've tried to get this for a couple of years through the ballot. Crossing fingers for this year. I want to see Larry.

Have the removed the broken swing and Prosecco vomit yet?

Thanks for the new thread @BIossomtoes

£5 billion on Rwanda. I wonder how many hospitals and schools that we "can't afford" that would cover.

But the Mail are upset over £1,500 council tax.

What was that biblical saying about tree trunks and specks of dust ?

medianewbie · 15/04/2024 16:08

Matthew 7 Verses 3 to 5. [3] And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? [4] Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye.

Not enough money to fix crumbling schools. Enough to spunk on flying a handful of immigrants to Africa Confused

SerendipityJane · 15/04/2024 16:29

The general consensus "round our way" is that Rwanda are playing the UK for idiots and will never house a single asylum seeker whilst having taken the money for 30,000. Basically Sunak and his cabal have been right royally fleeced.

The only people who have a need for these flights to happen are Sunak and his gang. Rwanda certainly doesn't need them.

Given Tory competence since 2019, we would probably have been better off getting our PPE from Rwanda, and Michelle Mone organising asylum.

I've had the same thought in my head for a while now. I could easily fill a plane full of people who deserve to be kicked out of this country and never to return.

As well as Sunak and Braverman obviously, I'd also give boarding cards to Boris, JRM, Govey, MadNad, Farage, Tice, Priti Patel, Raab, Williamson, Lee Andersin, Hunt, Truss, Badenoch. Oh my god, the list is endless. I could easily fill a Jumbo Jet.

Oh, and I'd ask Carol Vorderman to do the honours of flying the idiots out there and then come back with the empty plane. I somehow think Carol would be quite happy to do it 😏

The head of the Home Office has admitted that officials got the figures "so, so wrong" on how much it would cost to convert military barracks into asylum accommodation

Wethersfield and Scampton were assessed to cost £5m each to set up. It was actually £49m and £27m respectively

Home Office Permanent Secretary Matthew Rycroft confirms today's Times report that multiple countries were approached for a Rwanda-style scheme.

And they rejected it.
