Excl: Britain has entered talks to replicate the Rwanda migrant deportation scheme with Armenia, Ivory Coast, Costa Rica and Botswana.
Leaked documents reveal the government’s extensive search for additional third country deals:
Negotiations are on hold until the Rwanda scheme is up and running but government hopes to resume them once the first flights off the ground.
A list of African countries including Cape Verde, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Angola and Sierra Leone were put on a reserve list that would be approached if other targets failed.
Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Brazil & Columbia were also approached
But Morocco, Tunisia, Namibia & The Gambia “explicitly declined” to enter technical discussions
The FCDO warned the Home Office not to push further with these countries and to expect a "sharp rebuff" if they tried
Eight countries were ruled out by officials as non-starters for various reasons (Kenya, Uruguay, Benin, Djibouti, Gabon, Liberia, Azerbaijan, Guinea-Bissau, Suriname and Belize)
Kenya previously rejected migration deals with the UK due to concerns over “a new form of colonialism”.
