Discontinued foods that you really miss

asbestosmouth24 · 12/04/2024 22:46

many lovely things have been discontinued that I really enjoyed growing up, Burton's potato puffs, the original Ringos crisps as they were in the 80s & early 90s. Topic bars, Riva chocolate bars. plus many many more
what do you really miss that they no longer make?

Sainsbury's used to do some crisp/crouton like mini garlic breads. They were amazing. They were in a turquoise/silver metallic bag. I dream about them.

These threads always bring the hurt back.

Crunchymum · 13/04/2024 07:26

M&S are by the worst offenders for me.

A decade ago they stopped doing their chicken escalopes. I'm still not over it.

Then last year - only mere months after I first discovered it - they stopped doing their Bang Bang dip. Gutted (and considering how much of it I purchased, I'm surprised the stopped stocking it)

I find it really hard to get Foxes classic bars (the ones in the navy packaging) unless I pay a fiver on Amazon.

Non food it is a deodorant. I used to love Vaseline / cotton but they stopped stocking it or changed the name and formula. Google can't even seem to find it but I used it for years so didn't imagine it.

So many of these things for me!

One that I've not seen mentioned is the range of small sweets that Thorntons used to do. Vanilla fondant chocolate mice and strawberry fondant chocolate pigs. At Christmas they did a little Alpini chocolate log decorated with a puddle of icing "snow" and a little Robin. Their best products by a mile.

Agree with @Howtonamechange - the Sara Lee Pecan Danish - still regularly check the freezer aisles of large supermarkets in case someone has recreated it.

Also M&S Cheese Profiteroles - only lasted 3 years but couldn't find them this Xmas. So light & so cheesy.

Milkyway crispy rolls

I bought one yesterday in my local corner shop. Not seem them in supermarkets though.

This is quite niche but M&S Gefilte fish balls. A staple of my life for over 15 years now just gone.

@RubyGemStone have you tried the Kosher section of any major city supermarket or if you live in London a local Kosher MiniSupermarket or Jewish Style Deli? You're looking for 'fried fishballs' which is exactly that - fried gefillte fish.
Delicious with Pickles and salads! Mmmmm

Sainsbury’s custard doughnuts aren’t bad

They were my go to and very good even a few years ago, but I now find that the custard to dough ratio to be a lot less than what it used to be.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 13/04/2024 09:05

OP - Your initial post got it right first time.
Burton's (previously Walter's) Potato Puffs.
Best savory snack ever! I lament them!!

Rolypolyfishheads · 12/04/2024 23:50

Drifter.
Time Out.
Quorn nuggets with cheese inside them.
There used to be a frozen baguette thing, a bit like garlic bread but without the garlic and filled with cheese all the way through, that was absolutely perfect 🤤 I would love to have that back. Also Burger King Bean burger and the white chocolate and raspberry pie that was very recently at McDonald's for a short while.

Burger King bean burger is back! I saw a poster the other day

namechangeformeeee · 13/04/2024 09:08

Birdseye potato fritters :( I think about them often

lollipoprainbow · 13/04/2024 09:13

Sainsburys also had cheese buttons which I loved

Tesco did a ready meal of two chicken breasts in tarragon sauce which was lovely

Coastalcreeksider · 13/04/2024 09:13

Milky Lunch bars
Drifter
Topic bars but the ones from the 70s, huge with lots of nuts in them. Back then there really was "a hazelnut in every bite".

Blackcats7 · 13/04/2024 09:35

Waistline salad cream. Think it was Crosse & Blackwell
Kraft cheese spread (orange and in a jar)
Ice breaker chocolate bars

Coastalcreeksider · 13/04/2024 09:47

Coffee Matchmakers

MissBattleaxe · 12/04/2024 22:52

Toffo, especially the assorted ones. In the 80s, Sainsburys did these things called breakfast slices, a cross between bacon and a sort of grilled salami. They were delicious.

I loved those breakfast slices, but god knows what they were made of

asbestosmouth24 · 13/04/2024 11:18

I miss how toffee crisp bars used to be, with a decent chunky layer of rice crispies. not the thin rubbish they are now. they have totally ruined everything with this shrinkflation.

Birdseye fish in vegetable and tuscany sauce was nice. not seen that in a while.

Apparently they're discontinuing Animal Bars as well. DS9 is gutted. I went to the local shop the other day and the man told me so I bought his last 25 bars 😂

Brannigans Roast Beef & Mustard crisps.

Came on the thread to say this bloody lovely they were 😭

I remember them! They were gorgeous. Another one is Sainsbury's puff tarts, they were a lovely thin tart, there was a creamy cheese garlic type one I absolutely loved.

x2boys · 13/04/2024 11:35

johnworf · 13/04/2024 06:30

Do you mean this?

My childhood breakfast right there! It was delicious and very filling!.

afaloren · 13/04/2024 11:57

Spira
3D Doritos
Reversey Percies

Youdontfoolme · 13/04/2024 12:03

Fry’s Five Centres
United biscuits
Flavoured toffos
Heinz tinned syrup pudding

Anyone remember Disney Allstars? My Mum used to get them for us in the 70s. Cant quite recall if they were crisps or a monster munch type snack.

Borborygmus · 13/04/2024 12:23

M&S Swiss Pies
Frizzets
DelRosa Rose Hip Syrup (though I'd probably have no teeth if it still existed!)

ScentlessAprentice · 13/04/2024 12:33

Chicken, bacon and sweetcorn Findus Crispy Pancakes. Secret bars, Pyramints, Smiley bars.

@MissBattleaxe breakfast slices can still be got in Sainsbos in NI. Or at least they were available the last time I went grocery shopping there, which was a couple of months ago. I know they're filthy but I absolutely love them. You might just need a trip to Belfast 😉
