Is this an XL Bully?

I don't think so, it doesn't look thickset enough through the ribcage and chest. The legs are very long and spindly. It's certainly a large and strong looking dog but I suspect a Mastiff or Staffy cross rather than an XL Bully.

Momstermunch · 08/04/2024 07:18

I doubt anyone can tell from a photo. I think even vets can't be absolutely sure without running tests. Which is one of the problems with the ban really.

Emma543 · 08/04/2024 07:19

I don’t think so judging from the picture.

fieldsofbutterflies · 08/04/2024 07:21

It looks like a mastiff type dog - maybe a Cane Corso.

Ilovelurchers · 08/04/2024 07:22

My friend has XLs and they are different to this dog - sort of chunkier and cuddlier looking in the face? But it's not a great photo and I am sure the breed varies. I think it is often hard to determine dog breeds as many share similar traits and a vet or expert would need to decide. Can I ask why - what is the situation? Do you feel at risk from this dog? Hope you are ok.

Bluewallss · 08/04/2024 07:23

I think it looks very similar, but has much longer legs.

HeadacheEarthquake · 08/04/2024 07:25

Why?

If you feel worried about it, report it 🤷‍♀️

Jokl · 08/04/2024 07:25

I think it’s more likely to be a cane corso, just from that photo, but it’s very hard to tell as it’s not great quality!

I thought it was more mastiff than bully.

HippeePrincess · 08/04/2024 07:28

Definitely looks to be a kind of bull mastiff, there’s one near us crossed with a Labrador 😍

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 08/04/2024 07:30

Well the guy was hanging around a children's play park. Seemed a strange choice and I was on high alert in case the dog went into attack mode.
THe guy then sat down at the entrance to the park and a group of mums and toddlers appeared, met up with him and all walked along the path together and now I'm worried for those kids!
I forgot I have Google lens so that result came up as a Pitbull which is also a banned breed apparently.

But yeh to the PP saying if I'm worried why not just report...well I wanted to see if people thought it was a banned breed - it's hard to tell. And I'm also thinking they can't do anything since I don't know where the guy lives.

Looks like a mastiff.

Mrsjayy · 08/04/2024 07:34

So he had a dog on a lead and he was walking with people he knew? I think you are being a bit over the top.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 08/04/2024 07:36

Don't you mean 'was waiting for his family at the park'? It's not as if he was there with a giant net and sack on his back marked 'Dog Food - May Contain Children', after all.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 08/04/2024 07:37

He didn't have it on a lead for a huge portion of the time it was out. And if you think someone is capable of holding a dog of that size back when it wants to attack you are very naive!

It may be very well trained.
Was there any behaviour that suggested otherwise?

HeadsShouldersTitsandArse · 08/04/2024 07:38

Come on OP this is a bit of a stretch.
I have a lifelong fear of dogs, especially staffy/bully/boxer.. anything. That has the ‘mean’ look😂 but this wouldn’t bother me.

You’re obviously a considerable distance away and the people who were around the dog felt comfortable enough to be so it’s none of your business.

Hedgerow2 · 08/04/2024 07:40

XLs aren't banned are they?

Mrsjayy · 08/04/2024 07:40

I mean he was walking with people he seemed to know with the dog did the dog bound around the children was there behaviour you were unsure of ?

Mumofyellows · 08/04/2024 07:42

That doesn't look like an XL to me. Why did you feel it was such a threat to the children? Was it behaving aggressively? Or did you just not like how it looked? It doesn't sound like he was doing anything wrong and was seemingly just waiting for some friends...

AnOpinionInTheHand · 08/04/2024 07:43

It doesn’t look like one to me for the reasons others have said

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 08/04/2024 07:44

We had to walk past the guy to get into the park so we weren't a considerable distance away at all. From when I took the photo we were because obviously I didn't want the guy to see me take a photo!

It's not like the snapshot you see is how it was the whole time!

But to be fair the dog was ok he had a large stick he was happily carrying. However I thought that doesn't matter if they are happy enough and then see something they want to kill/attack?!

What made me feel anxious is when we were approaching him on the path the dog started looking at my son, who is 4 and the guy noticed me say to ds to move to the side and we walked with me standing as a barrier to the dog. The guy moved the dog to the side at least. Our 2yr old was in the park too. My husband commented about the dog to me as well as he had gotten to the park 10 mins before me and the 4yr old.

It was just a question, I don't know why people are being sarcy.

Beezknees · 08/04/2024 07:45

Doesn't look like one to me. XLs have quite a "muscular" look, their legs are thick and wide set.

Jf20 · 08/04/2024 07:45

Doesn’t look like one to me. Looks like he was waiting for friends or family and walking his dog, who behaved perfectly well?

ThisOldThang · 08/04/2024 07:47

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 08/04/2024 07:13

Photo attached.

I think it looks like a Cane Corso.

Cane Corsos come under the Bully XL legislation because they match the Act's measurements and description and the Cane Corso isn't a breed recognised by the UK Kennel Club.

All Cane Corsos should now be insured, exempted and muzzled in public.

Please report the dog and owner.
