It's Count Binface/Lord Buckethead for me. I don't think he could do a worse job than his predecessors.

I think you are right but also I have a lot of Muslim friends and they aren't voting for him (Labour) because of Gaza. Of course they won't be voting Tory or Lib Dem either so perhaps the Green lady will do better than expected. It is about more than the individual personalities involved for some people and sending a message to the party itself. As I said earlier, a really grim choice between candidates that not many people are really fired up about.

Seems unfair to penalise Khan for Labour's (admittedly terrible) stance on Gaza. He was one of the first politicans to call for a ceasefire and did so as early on as October 2023.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. I live in zone 1 and regularly drive (electric car) and it’s just not that busy. Some of the main roads are busy at peak times but I’ve experienced considerably worse traffic in smaller cities in the UK. Bristol in particular springs to mind.

I think that people who don’t live or work in London imagine it to be totally gridlocked with road journeys taking hours and pavements that are a sea of people. It’s just not the reality.

I mean very few people drive in zone 1. I'd never in a million years even consider driving into central London. In my area traffic is particularly bad at rush hour, like most places I guess. One problem of our ltn, is when we have roadworks or there's an accident. Very difficult to divert traffic to other roads which causes a lot of traffic for us.

I wouldn't regularly drive into Zone 1 because of the congestion charge. As a resident, you must have an exemption?

They are looking at the big picture and Sadiq is a Labour politician. Many have turned away from the Labour Party and are saying they will vote Green

I don't live in zone 1...I'm in zone 3/4. No one where I live would ever drive into central London. Decades ago, I would drive into central London for a night out. As a child I remember my parents taking me to a restaurant in central London and we parked right outside. That would be unheard of now!

@Comedycook Is this your full time job? You’ve been arguing on here for days now. 😂

I made one post today. If it was my full time job I'd definitely be on performance review.

so that when cars hit people they’re more likely to die? Sounds great.

No, it hasn't. The vast majority of roads there will still be on 20 mph limits.

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 17/04/2024 20:51

Yes. When Labour get in we’ll no doubt see a new raft of criminal offences created. The gist of Jenkins’s article was the eagerness of Blair’s governments to create offences. Round II coming up.

Such as pointless legislation supposedly protecting shop workers which will actually give them not one iota more protection than they have already? Oh no, maybe not, that seems to be a Tory initiative.

I have no idea what you’re talking about but I’m sure it’s very important.

Prioritising people who can afford cars is much more important than those who walk, because they are obviously poor because they can't afford to drive.

I was thinking more of the pointless 20mph zones like the highway or commercial road , more than happy to do 20 in built up areas

Knife crime - why does Sadiq always get blamed for this and no one even mentions the shit show that is The Met??!!

(Which the Home Secretary is in charge of and responsible for funding please remember)

Very misleading. See:

All mayors shout about how great they’ve been on crime. It’s all bollocks. But Khan is probably the worst offender for vain boasting.

Knife crime has gone up under Sadiq's watch. Its an URGENT situation that he has avoided. This should come before 20 mph roads. Everyone I know feels the same way especially those parents with black boys.
He has failed to tackle it and prioritise it as a matter of urgency in London.

1990s · 20/04/2024 18:54

But why is it his sole responsibility and nothing to do with the Met? Seriously would like an actual answer.

Because I don't like Khan and he is Labour.

ShinyBandana · 20/04/2024 19:02

Definitely Sadiq Khan

youngones1 · 20/04/2024 19:04

Under Sadiq Khan the GLA proportion of my council tax bill has increased from 5% to 20%, he has failed on affordable housing and shown contempt for drivers with older cars that don't meet ulez requirements. Time for a change.

1990s · 20/04/2024 18:54

This is from the Mayor of London website:

"One of the Mayor’s key responsibilities is overseeing the work of the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) – setting the priorities for policing and community safety in London, agreeing the policing budget and holding the Met Commissioner to account for delivering a professional, efficient and effective service to Londoners."

So he doesn't have sole responsibility, but it sounds like he has quite a lot of responsibility"

Needspace2023 · 20/04/2024 19:48

As Mayor he has a lot of control over what problems should be prioritised including a good portion of the budget for the Metropolitan Police.
He has buried his head in the sand while the number of fatal stabbings has risen. He just does not seem capable of caring enough. Many victims in NOT in gangs either.
