It's Count Binface/Lord Buckethead for me. I don't think he could do a worse job than his predecessors.

Definitely not Khan, and I live (and have lived for most of my life in London). His policies are divisive to suit his agenda, London is suffering as a result of him not allowing communities to integrate as they have in the past. I don't like any of the candidates but will vote for whomever is most likely to block Khan getting in. One other thing, the waste of money on the "#maaate" campaign shows you exactly who he is

Exactly

He is awful

Khan will definitely win but I personally think that will be not so much a reflection on him but a reflection on the other candidates

I think you are right but also I have a lot of Muslim friends and they aren't voting for him (Labour) because of Gaza. Of course they won't be voting Tory or Lib Dem either so perhaps the Green lady will do better than expected. It is about more than the individual personalities involved for some people and sending a message to the party itself. As I said earlier, a really grim choice between candidates that not many people are really fired up about.

I'd be mighty concerned if a driver could exceed the speed limit by 25% inadvertedly.
No wonder roads are so dangerous.

I picked 25mph so that you wouldn’t quibble about the likelihood of being done for speeding at 21, 22 or 23 mph.

Exceeding a speed limit by 5mph is the proper measure. Not a percentage.

It may very well be (as has happened to me several times, though without penalty) that the driver is trying to stay well within a 30mph speed limit because the 20 zone was badly signposted.

The equivalence of all speeding drivers with violent criminals is very stupid.

A speeding driver is committing a crime, and sometimes that ends up quite violently too.

suburburban · 17/04/2024 20:04

Used to be 30 mph in these places and it worked fine

It's probably quite dangerous to be watching your speedometer constantly rather than not go above 20 mph

Fortunately most of the roads where I am are at 30 but not sure for how long

I live on the border of two boroughs...one has adopted the 20mph on nearly all roads and the other hasn't. So one the roads where the border starts and finishes, the limit changes from 20-30 and vice versa, yet its the same road and same road conditions. It really doesn't make sense.

Technically, yes. Like watching the telly without a licence.

I think the law should take a stronger line with dangerous and reckless driving, BTW. But stigmatising all speeding drivers as violent criminals is a sure sign of a point of view that’s come adrift of common sense and reasonable judgement.

I live in London, I’m a nurse who works shifts, early starts, late finishes and nights.
If I catch a bus to work it takes me 1.5 hours if I drive 20-30 mins.
I literally would not be able to do my job if I didn’t drive as I need to get to and from work in time to pick and drop kids at school. Also given I do a 12.5hr nigh shift forgive me for driving and getting home in 20 mins so I have time to sleep before getting up to do another 12.5hr nightshift.
Not everywhere in London has buses that run every 10-15 mins. My bus goes twice an hour but I then have to connect to other buses or trains. The Ulez has had major financial impact on us and given we are surrounded by woods and open fields on one side I doubt it’s had any effect on our air quality

You are a key worker, surely the rules should be different in your situation...?

To quote Simon Jenkins in the Guardian - the paper of choice for most MNers:

You can go to jail in Britain for not having a licence for a church concert, smoking in a public place, selling a grey squirrel, trans-shipping unlicensed fish, or disobeying a health and safety inspector.

All such wrongdoers are indeed criminals.

Come down the A2 through the Blackwall Tunnel ( soon to be charged for thanks Mr Kahn ) the speed goes 50,30 through the tunnel there’s a blink and you miss it 20 limit just after the tunnel then 30,40 and 50 again !! Why have the 100 yards of 20 ? I don’t suppose they will do you for speeding there but technically they could
And you can’t tell me all the main entry’s into London need to be 20 limits
money raising exercise maybe ??

Id imagine virtually every driver in the country is a criminal then. Huge difference between knowingly speeding every day and doing 130mph on the motorway or 50mph in a built up area and someone whose speed creeps up to 23mph on a 20 road.

I've been told that all the roads in London that are not in LTNs are bumper to bumper with traffic anyway, so the speed limit is perhaps a little irrelevant?

Yes. When Labour get in we’ll no doubt see a new raft of criminal offences created. The gist of Jenkins’s article was the eagerness of Blair’s governments to create offences. Round II coming up.

You are mistaken those great pieces of law are part of the current Criminal Justice Bill.

You're being deliberately obtuse and your attitude towards cars and driving is sounding more extreme by the minute.

I understood. The point remains that Blair was ready to criminalise all sorts of things. I expect that Labour will happily adopt the Bill if it’s not on the books by the time they’re in government.

Perhaps you have survey evidence that contradicts it?

Yes and Blair should have faced criminal charges himself for war crimes as far as I'm concerned

ShelfShark · 18/04/2024 08:18

whatdoidonowffs · 17/04/2024 21:09

This couldn’t be further from the truth. I live in zone 1 and regularly drive (electric car) and it’s just not that busy. Some of the main roads are busy at peak times but I’ve experienced considerably worse traffic in smaller cities in the UK. Bristol in particular springs to mind.

I think that people who don’t live or work in London imagine it to be totally gridlocked with road journeys taking hours and pavements that are a sea of people. It’s just not the reality.
