The difference now isn't that the politics has shifted further to the right.
It's that Sunak has zero party discipline. He can't reprimand Braverman (as I am sure she would like to be) because it will stir up the nutters.

If you surround yourself with people with similar opinions, you can lose sight of what most people actually think - which is probably what happens to a lot of politicians.
