There's real worry in the SEND world about the so-called safety valve agreements. They are tied to a lot of strings around the local authority concerned saving money, and the reality is that the councils concerned are doing so by refusing EHCPs which are obviously desperately needed and refusing to put children in specialist schools when, again, it's obvious that heir needs can't possibly be met in the mainstream. Naturally, neither the government nor the Department for Education are at all bothered that this means they are blatantly telling councils to break the law.

Yes. And at the end of all that there are children who can't access education effectively, therefore impacting their life chances.

I do have skin in this game, and I absolutely hate the Tories for it. "Just get an assessment/a learning plan/support in place". How exactly? The system is overwhelmed, mainstream schools have cut pastoral support due to funding black holes and there is no incentive at all for the school to engage with any "support plans", apart from the fact most teachers want to help their students. But they are frazzled and the system shouldn't be relying on their goodwill to function.

To be very honest, I see it as yet another way the Conservatives exploit women's unpaid caring work. As most teachers are women and its just assumed they will pick this work up.

Angry

I agree with this point about the Conservatives and women. When it comes to money and public policy supporting women in the workplace or as independent economic actors they talk a good game but do not deliver. Their model is basically that women should pick up care where they cannot find a business model to rinse people out of money. Actual state provision is out of the question. It's the continuing privatisation of care for profit. SEN is part of that too.

For the second time

Such a waste of police time, bet Daly's constituents are over the moon he is dictating so much time to this issue.

cardibach · 12/04/2024 11:05

It’s specifically the electoral issue this time - which is daft. Students (for eg) can have 2 residences - the offence is trying to vote from both, not having two.

BIossomtoes · 12/04/2024 11:14

I hope someone will submit an FoI request so we know the cost of the police time this will have cost. I bet it’s many multiples of the £1500 she allegedly owes.

DuncinToffee · 12/04/2024 11:18

It takes the heat away from Donelan's £34,000, very convenient

The Plan is working well then.

itsgettingweird · 12/04/2024 12:02

SEND is just ridiculous.

I work in an sld/pmld needs special school.

We have pupils transferred to us from MS where they had 2:1. And the place, ent still failed and they often did 2 hours a day yet these 2 staff are paid FT.

Into a SS where they are in a class suitable for their needs (generally class of 8 with 4 staff) and manage Ft education.

Why they can't see investing into special education is cheaper in the long run (but it shouldn't be about the money) and just try to cut funding etc which ultimately ends up costing more and costing parents more too.

Zonder · 12/04/2024 12:22

Absolutely agree @itsgettingweird

LittleBowSheep · 12/04/2024 12:49

This did make me smile yesterday.

The Reform party were having a clear-out of their more unsuitable election candidates which included those who had been inactive for a while. Tommy Cawkwell was one of those dropped but it was found his inactivity was due to the fact that he was dead.

The party then stated they were 'mortified' to have discovered the candidate was deceased. 😦

Richard Tice, leader of Reform UK

Reform UK sorry for not knowing York candidate had died

The party says it is "mortified" it dropped a candidate for being "inactive" without knowing he had died.

Angela Rayner may owe as much as £3500 by declaring the first home she bought to live in as the first home she bought to live in when she sold it.

Mrs Sunak, doesn't owe many thousands of pounds from when she wasn't mainly living in the country her husband was prime minister of it. Except that she was, but that's ok, she's a tory.

Baroness Michelle Mone, appears to have been paid millions for crap and/or non existent PPE through covid. Nothing to see here though.

How many people buy a home, meet someone, trial living together before selling both houses to buy a bigger one. It's normal, and if it's the first home you bought and lived in, it makes sense not to pay capital gains.

It's fucking pathetic.

Notonthestairs · 12/04/2024 13:11

It seems easy enough for the Conservative to overlook some tax issues eg Lord Bamford seems likely to be hit with a £500 million pound bill. Ashworth accepted a peerage under false pretences and dodged paying tens of millions of tax over 5 years.

And there are others, including Cabinet Ministers that 'forgot' key information in their tax returns or used tax schemes inappropriately (Zahawi).

But I guess Rayner's CGT was just a step too far.

Zonder · 12/04/2024 12:22

Absolutely agree @itsgettingweird

Me too, it’s always such short term sticking plaster nonsense instead of properly investing/spending & making life chances more equal for everyone & it’s always always at the expense of of those that need these services so wrong on so many levels.

Notonthestairs · 12/04/2024 14:23

"Why they can't see investing into special education is cheaper in the long run (but it shouldn't be about the money) and just try to cut funding etc which ultimately ends up costing more and costing parents more too."

They do it (in part) because they are locked into taking a short term (5 year) view based around the electoral cycle.

I think this has got worse since the Referendum and as the Conservatives have become even more unstable. We have factions competing for attention and donors - not focusing on the country.

Now the Government's focus barely extends beyond the next news cycle.

Investing in the system would absolutely lead to better long term outcomes for those with SN and disabilities. It would also benefit those in MS schooling (pupils and staff) and future employers - and therefore HMRC.

But there needs to be the political vision for this to happen.

Oh for fuckety fuck’s sake.
Police investigate Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-68797258

Are they also investigating how a former cabinet minister of a foreign, oppressive regime can move to Britain, make a large donation to the tory party, then shortly afterwards be appointed to the House of Lords?

That's the thing that these fuckwits are missing isn't it. She's a normal person, with a normal life, doing the same things as entirely normal people. Normal people don't care. If she's messed up and owes money, so what? It's hardly the same as plundering the country while our kids sit in collapsing schools and our parents die waiting hours for ambulances.

Don’t forget Hunt ‘forgetting’ he owned 7 properties.

Alexandra2001 · 12/04/2024 14:49

The Police shouldn't literally be hounding a woman over a very trivial allegation that they deemed not worthy of investigation when they first looked into it, especially at the bequest of a rival politician, who is hardly unbiased.
If a more norml member of the public had asked for the matter to be looked at again, they'd have been told NO.

This is very much like the Caroline Flack situation.... some men really fucking hate any woman who is remotely successful, they must be cut back down to size.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 12/04/2024 15:10

Why are they even investigating something many years past the statute of limitations? I believe it's 12 months for election issues. This happened years ago.

Don’t forget Hunt ‘forgetting’ he owned 7 properties.

It’s not about the CGT this time, but elections - I can’t see an offence. You can have as many residences as you like and register at them all as long as you only vote at one, as far as I am aware. Works for students anyway. And did for me when I had a live in job.

Cheguevarahamster · 12/04/2024 16:21

Graham Stuart - energy minister has announced he is standing down from his Cabinet role to focus on "local issues."

He's been on resignation watch for a while.
