Stuart's resignation is slightly odd timing isn't it?
He has a 20,000 majority - although obviously no seat is safe.

He's not standing down as an MP I don't think?

Maybe there will be a June election and that's why he wants to focus his energies on local issues?

Vod · 12/04/2024 17:21

Doesn't dropping/refusing a Cabinet role often indicate the person wants to be able to do consulting roles asap, so they're getting the 6 month wait over with?

Notonthestairs · 12/04/2024 17:30

Sorry, I meant standing down from Cabinet position to focus on local issues when he's built quite a majority in Beverley.
But yes it's probably so he can begin a consulting job in 6 months. I had forgotten about that restriction.

Sounds possible.

Though maybe the good people of Yorkshire will vote him out when they get the opportunity.

"Why they can't see investing into special education is cheaper in the long run (but it shouldn't be about the money) and just try to cut funding etc which ultimately ends up costing more and costing parents more too."

They do it (in part) because they are locked into taking a short term (5 year) view based around the electoral cycle.

I think this has got worse since the Referendum and as the Conservatives have become even more unstable. We have factions competing for attention and donors - not focusing on the country.

Now the Government's focus barely extends beyond the next news cycle.

Investing in the system would absolutely lead to better long term outcomes for those with SN and disabilities. It would also benefit those in MS schooling (pupils and staff) and future employers - and therefore HMRC.

But there needs to be the political vision for this to happen.

It would also cut the welfare bill because instead of (mainly woman) parents having to have 1 SAHP as there is no schooling they fall under needing UC top ups etc.

But that doesn't seem obvious to people who are meant to be in charge

Are they also investigating how a former cabinet minister of a foreign, oppressive regime can move to Britain, make a large donation to the tory party, then shortly afterwards be appointed to the House of Lords?

Probably in much the same way as they looked into how an ex KGB agent could move to the UK, throw lavish parties and get his son into the HoL as a Lord of Siberia, despite security concerns Confused

But yes, Rayner is the real problem here

Queen was asked to block Evgeny Lebedev’s peerage, claims documentary

Exclusive: Channel 4 film says officials contacted the palace in 2020 owing to concerns about Lord Lebedev’s father’s links to Putin regime

Consulting I am sure is an important local priority for his constituents.

DuncinToffee · 12/04/2024 19:22

I am confused re Stuart, is he stepping down or is he just moving to the back benches?

Ian Hislop, "Oh he doesn't"

Prof Hannah Fry, "He says: We have one at home in Northallerton. I think I still have the app on my phone.. Which is interesting, because, the Wetherspoons app stayed on his phone but not the WhatsApp"

I think the Tories had better be careful if they pursue Rayner if she made a technical breach re registering her address for registering to vote and if they set a precedent for MPs resigning re breaking the law.

If an MP is caught speeding, they have broken the law. Should they resign?

As far as I understand the relevant act with regard to electoral offences is limited to 1 year, given it was 10 years ago, the police aren't going to do anything in that regard, and as others have noted it is not that unusually to be on the electoral roll at two addresses.

I agree there's probably nothing to see here.

But if the Tories want to set a precedent for resigning if a law is broken, then that is a massive precedent to set!

Surprising that journalists are not highlighting this in their reporting of the new police investigation.

Proceedings against a person in respect of any offence to which Section 176 applies must be commenced within one year after the offence was committed. For the purpose of Section 176, the laying of information is deemed to be the commencement of the proceedings. There are circumstances in which the time limit can be extended but an application to a Magistrates’ Court do so must be made within the 12-month time limit

Unless AR is being pursued under different breaches.

Notonthestairs · 13/04/2024 08:40

I don't think the Conservatives expect Rayner to be charged with anything.

They just wanted the headlines linking Rayner with a Police investigation - and are hoping that will stick in the mind.

Shamelessly using the police.

But pointless because people have made their minds up and the Don't Knows won't be swayed by this non story.

Did he not see himself as that when he illegally prorogued parliament 🤔

L1ttledrummergirl · 13/04/2024 10:06

What's really pissing me off about the Rayner thing is that in this country the law says that we are innocent until proven guilty. It's not down to Rayner to prove herself innocent, that's not how the law works. By doing this, the conservatives are changing the rules which can affect us all. The police should be pursuing an harassment case.

It comes back to needing ID to vote. We are all being presumed guilty of committing the offence of impersonation unless we prove we are innocent. It is taking one of the cornerstones our democracy has been built on and is tearing it away. It's altering the perception and truth of how our society works.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

I am sure there are many skeletons in the closets of Tory MPs when it comes to potentially illegal practices.

Yes. I wish they would prosecute the MPs that make these vexatious complaints for perverting the course of justice. I won't hold my breath though
