Just listening to Harry Potter for the millionth time and realised it's never mentioned if all the little wizards and witches who are non muggle ever go to wizarding Primary Schools ?

I'm sure there's lots of other unanswered HP questions we can try and get to the bottom of invent for our own amusement

I think they are just at normal primary school and just get an owl letter but how do they know they want to go to Hogwarts in the first place?

DidoKaftan · 23/03/2024 11:41

No, I remember it as something fans raised with JKR back in the days when she was being asked searching questions all the time by obsessive fan fic writers. It’s not in the novels, as far as I remember, but I suppose we have to assume that magical kids are homeschooled till the age of 11, as there’s never any sense that Hogwarts students know one another from primaries, and also Ron/Arthur Weasley wouldn’t be so clueless about Muggle inventions, because they’d have been educated alongside Muggles?

DigitalDust · 23/03/2024 11:41

I always assumed they were home-schooled

Well, it appears to be the only wizarding school in the UK?

Based on my extensive reading of fanfic research the consensus for pure bloods seems to be home schooling / tutors. Potentially shared tutors. Some definitely know each other before Hogwarts. They can't go to Muggle primary school and be as ignorant as they're shown to be at the world cup.

BoobyDazzler · 23/03/2024 11:43

markusdam · 23/03/2024 11:43

Do they have to apply for Hogwarts like at the beginning of year 6!!!!!

are there appeal procedures or is the school undersubscribed?

what are the fees if any?

Whataweirdsituation · 23/03/2024 11:44

As a home schooled kid myself, I’m now very put out I never got my letter.

Mrsjayy · 23/03/2024 11:47

Oh you said non muggles never mind they are Probably just at home like every one else. They go to Hogwarts to learn to hone the Wizards/witchey thing. They never have double maths do they 😀

I think Draco went to a private prep with other death eater sprogs with suspicious names . I imagine it was called something like St Moggs.

Worried1305 · 23/03/2024 11:51

How come they never have to study English, Maths, Science or Languages beyond the age of 11, once they reach Hogwarts? Surely they also need to learn these alongside wizarding skills like Transfiguration?

Mrsjayy · 23/03/2024 12:01

The Internet said Molly Weasly homeschooled her children. Although I think that was a hurried answer by JK because she hadn't actually thought about pre Hogwarts !

Potions is basically Chemistry and I think there’s a Biology equivalent. Physics would be more challenging…

Rosiiee · 23/03/2024 12:04

The Weasleys knew the kids would get letters from Hogwarts though because they’re both wizards.

I think the muggles just went to normal primary because their parents didn’t know they’d be getting letters?

DigitalDust · 23/03/2024 12:05

I want to know where the Squibs get educated as well

orangeblosssom · 23/03/2024 12:05

DD tells me that it is likely some of the children would have gone to magical primary schools. There were other secondary schools available as mentioned in Goblet of Fire, not just Hogwarts. The other schools participated in the Triwizard
Tournament.

Xiaoxiong · 23/03/2024 12:06

@viques I assumed the same as Draco seemed to know the other year 7 slytherins already. They must have all been at a private prep that the muggle families didn't know about and the Weasleys couldn't afford.

Rosiiee · 23/03/2024 12:06

@orangeblosssom i thought they were all schools from other countries though?

That’s the case with vast amounts of HP backstory, though. Obsessive fans asked questions about things JKR had never considered, and she just ended up trying to come up with stuff that didn’t contradict the facts of that world as we see them in the novels, because when that happened, fans pointed it out too. Then the films had to make decisions, like ‘how many first years are admitted at one go? How big is the school?’ Which in turn call up issues about whether it’s the only wizarding school in the UK etc.

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 23/03/2024 12:08

Many go to fee-paying magical primary schools.

However, the Ministry of Magic is intending to slap VAT (Voldemort Added Tax) on the fees. A lot of wizards and witches are very unhappy about this.

There have been lots of threads on MN (MagicNet) about how the parents scrimp and save to afford a decent education for their children and how they’re more Weasley than Malfoy in their finances.

Others think they’re privileged and should send their children to ordinary schools.

There’s talk of relocating to France or Bulgaria.

Isn’t that just because their fathers are likely to have been Death Eaters, or Death Eater-sympathising Purebloods? Ron, for instance, from an old Pureblood family, doesn’t seem to know anyone other than his siblings on the train.

No, they apparently can’t attend as students
