Just listening to Harry Potter for the millionth time and realised it's never mentioned if all the little wizards and witches who are non muggle ever go to wizarding Primary Schools ?

I'm sure there's lots of other unanswered HP questions we can try and get to the bottom of invent for our own amusement

IIRC, the Squibs are from magical families but have no magical ability. Neville's family were worried he would be a Squib so were elated when his letter arrived. This to me implies that Squibs wouldn't go to Hogwarts or any other magical school. Pretty awful position to be in.

Filch was a Squib too, I think.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/03/2024 12:20

... and now I see JKR has confirmed all of that in the link above!

Mrsjayy · 23/03/2024 12:20

Well that's just elitist isn't it !

Yes he was.

Practical, really. Imagine sitting in Transformation knowing you would never, ever be able to transform anything.

And Arabella Figg (was that her name?), the Dursleys’ neighbour, who helps Harry after the Dementor attack on him and Dudley.

I agree, it’s a horrible position, and the wizarding world seems to be quite cruel to those with magical blood but no abilities. Filch is an unsympathetic character, but it’s hard not to feel sorry for someone who lives very much in the magical world with no powers, has a beginners guide to magic in his room, and whose animosity towards Hogwarts students must surely come from the fact that he’s watched generations of 11 year olds rock up with far more magic than he will ever have, and which they can use to trick and elude him.

Surely it’s a really stupid/cruel decision to have a squib in a semi-disciplinary role at Hogwarts?

Many go to fee-paying magical primary schools.

However, the Ministry of Magic is intending to slap VAT (Voldemort Added Tax) on the fees. A lot of wizards and witches are very unhappy about this.

There have been lots of threads on MN (MagicNet) about how the parents scrimp and save to afford a decent education for their children and how they’re more Weasley than Malfoy in their finances.

Others think they’re privileged and should send their children to ordinary schools.

There’s talk of relocating to France or Bulgaria.

Brilliant.

Especially the VAT reference.

I can well imagine the history being made up post the books being written because people will look for every question they can ask (and yes I'm as guilty of that as the next person!)

GlacindaTheTroll · 23/03/2024 12:37

Ernie Prang (driver of the Knight Bus) did not attend Hogwarts.

No mention of where he did go to school, but I assume there must be somewhere else you could attend, else there would be many potentially dangerous witches and wizards with powers but no proper skills in their use (and safety)

Mrsjayy · 23/03/2024 12:43

I assume the wizarding world is worldwide so there is other schools.

AcrossthePond55 · 23/03/2024 12:48

IIRC it's mentioned in the books that Hogwarts is not compulsory and that magical parents can choose to educate their offspring at home, although few choose to do so.

I always assumed that pre-11s were homeschooled. Especially since JKR points out that they cannot always control their magic before that age, ie Harry with the snake at the zoo. Having them in muggle schools would be a huge exposure risk.

That would add a whole new dimension to “my child is made to sit next to the naughty kid”. It would be “my child has to sit next to the magic kid and keeps getting turned into a toad. AIBU to speak to the head?”

There are, as far as I know, 5 wizarding schools in the world.

Hogwarts- Britain, Scotland most likely.

Ilvermorney- America
Durmstrang - Bulgaria
Beaubatons - France
Then there's one in China(?) But i don't know the name of it. They learn wandless magic there!

I've always assumed they were homeschooled pre secondary.

Well, yes, the Ministry would have to have staff permanently dashing around every primary with a magical kid to magically obliviate teachers and children and dinner ladies and parents who had seen magic happening. Even magical children with Muggle parents must pose this risk — I can’t imagine Hermione, for instance, keeping quiet about noticing her first stirrings of magic? She’d be asking her teachers, ransacking the library for explanations of levitating tables or whatever, and her parents would probably have taken her to a child psychologist!

What makes you think they haven't?

The schools would have great netball and football teams though: the balls would just fly into the hoop or goal by themselves.

And imagine sports day! There’d be one kid in the sack race with a sack that ran on its own.

Luckydog7 · 23/03/2024 13:15

I don't know how canonical the game is but there's a school in Africa mentioned there where they also practice wandless magic and animagus are more common and less controlled. Nigeria I think but it's been a while.

Because of the way we’re always hearing about it being a big Ministry kerfuffle when someone enchants a Muggle’s kettle, or having to obliviate Muggles when Mad Eye Moody does something to dustbins? They always seem overstretched and barely coping, without coping with hundreds or thousands of 4 to 11 year olds with uncontrolled magic scattered around the UK and Ireland…

Luckydog7 · 23/03/2024 13:17

Ah Uganda! The largest wizarding school in the world. And there are 11 schools according to fandom.

FacingTheWall · 23/03/2024 13:26

There must be other schools, just based on the sheer numbers of wizards and witches in the wizarding world. There’s no way hogwarts has the capacity to teach all of them in the uk, they only seem to have an intake of around 100 per year group.

Sprogonthetyne · 23/03/2024 13:28

The pure bloods wouldn't want their kids mixing with mugged so employ private tutors, the less well off homeschool (probably why Mrs weasly is a SAHM, despite needing money). Grown wizards would struggle to get through parents evening or pick up without saying something to give the game away, and little wizard kids would definitely end up bringing in magical items to impress their mugged friends.

However, as all the classes at hogwarts seem to be magic based, the kids are been taught by parent or wizard tutors who themselves haven't studied maths or English past age 11. Kind of explains why critical thinking is so limited in the wizarding world.

The others go to bog standard magical comprehensives.

Oh that's the one I meant in my post. No idea where I got China from! That's nothing like Africa!

Apparently there are a few mentioned in the game.

Indeed.

Obliviation Fast Service Tactitians (Education Division.)

Schools don’t get notice of their arrival. Like The Spanish Inquisition, no one expects them.

MargaretThursday · 23/03/2024 14:37

I thought they had to be homeschooled as the risk of them accidentally doing magic as it's developing is too high.
