What's one thing you didn't know that you just found or found out very late in life?

I just found out Americans call a burger with no minced patty, a sandwich. So essentially, a chicken burger is a chicken sandwich, and a filet o fish burger is a filet o fish sandwich

I found out that the song The Man who Sold the World was originally performed by David Bowie not Nirvana!

mindblown! 🤯

That all eels, american and European- go to breed in the Bermuda Triangle. I read it on sm and figured it most be made up - but found pages agreeing!

I found today that James Martin dated Barbara Broccoli for 4 years and she bought him 3 Picasso paintings. I read on the DM they were devoted to each other, they sounded like they were really meant to be.

The Hood is short for Neighbourhood
Penultimate means second to last

‘Bi-weekly’ which makes me think twice a week, surely?

CharlotteBog · 20/03/2024 20:53

ABBA is made up of the groups initials. Heard it on radio 2 last week.

GreenCereal · 20/03/2024 20:53

I've only just found out where Bermuda is. For decades I've thought it was near Cuba.

I fear for your mind if the fact that the writer of a song famous since the 1970s originally sang the song is in any way surprising 😂

If you have Twitter/X or the better alternative BlueSky, you should follow the Surprised Eel Historian for more amazing eel facts.

The line separating the numerator and denominator in a fraction is called the vinculum. Thanks to 6yo DC for that fact.

IdaPrentice · 20/03/2024 21:42

That Bird's Eye isn't a British company. The ads cleverly give that impression - ol' Cap'n Bird's Eye and everything. It's originally American, then the brand was bought by another group, which was then bought by another group or something, which has a European/UK arm.

I found out when some US celeb on a quiz show I think, said 'in the US we have this frozen food brand called Bird's Eye' - and I thought, wait a minute!

Tisfortired · 20/03/2024 21:45

The most recent thing I found out was that paprika is just dried and ground peppers! Possibly common knowledge but not for me!

Kurt says that at the beginning of the song on the MTV Unplugged version. He says "this is a David Bowie song".

Outwiththenorm · 20/03/2024 21:47

That greaseproof paper is incredible! After seeing it in recipes for all these years I finally bought some - cannot believe how non-stick it is!

EwwSprouts · 20/03/2024 21:48

That Albania has a huge coast. Colleague has just been there and said it was fantastic.

Newgolddream70 · 20/03/2024 21:52

I was about 43 when it dawned on me that the lyrics in Squeeze's Cool for Cats that go 'I'm invited in for coffee and I give the dog a bone' has absolutely nothing to do with canines and their treats 🙈😂

TheActualDuck · 20/03/2024 21:53

Golf - they move where the holes are on the greens.
Apparently the green keepers or whoever do it overnight so they're in different positions for the next day of a tournament.
The sneaky sods.
I'm still not convinced this is true and am fully prepared to be told it's a wind up.

BotDranning · 20/03/2024 21:54

That Heartbeat the TV program - was so called because its main characters were a Dr (heart) and a policeman (beat)......
