What's one thing you didn't know that you just found or found out very late in life?

I just found out Americans call a burger with no minced patty, a sandwich. So essentially, a chicken burger is a chicken sandwich, and a filet o fish burger is a filet o fish sandwich

I thought a pony was a smaller version of a horse?
Did horses have to be a certain height ?

A pony is 14.2hh and under.
A horse is over 14.2hh.
(A hand is 4inches/10cm). They are measured to their wither, the tallest ‘constant’ on the horse.

Only in the past 3-4 years have I realised.......

  1. Phil Collins played drums on the song Puss 'n' Boots by Adam Ant.

  2. Rick Astley sang backing vocal on The Circle Of Life by Elton John.

  3. Grammys are so-named because the statue is a gramophone.

  4. There is an arrow indicating what side the gas cap is on by the petrol gauge.

  5. MAMMOTHS were still around just 10,000 years ago.

  6. Pluto the planet - recently downgraded to dwarf planet - is smaller than Earth's moon!

  7. Narwhals are not make believe like unicorns!

(I am 50-ish!)

Who ya gonna call?

I learned that Huey Lewis was lined up to have his song I Want a New Drug used as the main action theme for Ghostbusters. For licensing reasons, the song couldn't be used.

So they basically lifted it wholesale, gave it a ghosty lyric, and had it recorded by Ray Parker Jr who had a worldwide smash hit with it. Cue lawyers and controversy.

Check it out on YouTube, tiktok etc. It's the same damn song.

OMG I have just listened to this on YouTube - they were certainly never going to get away with that!

Excellent username by the way Grin

That Bird's Eye isn't a British company. The ads cleverly give that impression - ol' Cap'n Bird's Eye and everything. It's originally American, then the brand was bought by another group, which was then bought by another group or something, which has a European/UK arm.

I found out when some US celeb on a quiz show I think, said 'in the US we have this frozen food brand called Bird's Eye' - and I thought, wait a minute!

I also found out last week that Hellman's (as in Hellman's Mayonnaise) isn't British, but an American company as well. 🙄

That a "shed load" of something doesn't mean a garden shed full to the rafters like I'd always imagined, I had a light bulb moment listening to a radio traffic report about a lorry and its "shed load" blocking a motorway.

Jackass is a male donkey (ass). Jack is a male donkey, Jenny is a female.

I also found out last week that Hellman's (as in Hellman's Mayonnaise) isn't British, but an American company as well. 🙄

It's even more confusing than that - it has different names in the East and West US. So you can buy Hellmann's mayonnaise in the Eastern US, but West of the Rockies it's called Best Foods mayonnaise.

Our Story

Hellmann's mission is to add extra flavor to your favorite recipes with its tasty product range & commitment to responsibly sourced ingredients.

The line separating the numerator and denominator in a fraction is called the vinculum. Thanks to 6yo DC for that fact.

I've got A level maths and did a maths module at uni and didn't know that!!

Me neither!

Raccaccoonie · 22/03/2024 09:48

Having looked up "vinculum" it looks like the main usage is something slightly different. It's not entirely clear if the fraction bar counts as one...

From another thread on MN I've learned that some cultures have "bathroom slippers" - separate from regular house slippers, that are worn only in the bathroom. Apparently very normal in Japan too, but I'd never heard of them.

That members of the public could rock to up a court and watch the cases there.
Dh was haunted after he stopped in one day- a 18 yo was jailed for drunk and disorderly. He said both the guy and his dad were bawling crying and the dad was saying’please don’t take him away’ or something to that effect.

Blimey, that is awful. There must have more to it than drunk and disorderly to warrant a jail sentence though.

I might go again at some point. I am live a walking distance from both the magistrates and crown courts, although I have been told the Crown court ones can go on for days. I went to magistrates, and someone in the public gallery had been there all day, and went down stairs as a defendant in a hearing, then went back upstairs to carry on watching more cases.

That the camera in an MRI is what you're lying on. I've just had one today and the warm toasty feeling across my lower back was wonderful (MRI'd for back issues). I asked the technologist what was happening and she told me about the camera, and the heat generated and laughed saying everyone who comes in for an MRI of the back loves it!

It's not a camera it's a 'coil' , a kind of antenna. Every MRI makes use of antennas to transmit radio energy into the body and antennas to listen for the 'resonant' echoes. It is these echoes that are used to create the image.

@TammytheFaceGhost watch thiss*. I grew up in London during the IRA campaign and knew bits and pieces, but this is a comprehensive history. Also read this - it's written like a mystery but it's about a real case of murder by the IRA. It's all fascinating.

I found out about 30 minutes ago that Elton John's song "Daniel" is about the Vietnam War.
I had no idea 😢

Follow on fact, one of EJ's sons with David Furnish has the middle name Daniel for this song. The other's middle name is Levon for this song. They were inspired to start this because the son with the middle name Levon- Zachary- was born on Christmas Day and the song has a lyric in it (about Levon) "He was born a pauper to a pawn on a Christmas Day..."

My excuse for knowing this information is that my parents are big Elton John fans 😂
