What's one thing you didn't know that you just found or found out very late in life?

I just found out Americans call a burger with no minced patty, a sandwich. So essentially, a chicken burger is a chicken sandwich, and a filet o fish burger is a filet o fish sandwich

The lesser used name Fanny is short for Stephanie! I had a serious- 'd'oh! Of course moment'! I am late forties...

I was thinking about this very thing last night whilst driving. I learnt it from watching 'Ghosts' Lady Fanny is actually Lady Stephanie.
Did u learn this the same way as me?

BouleDeSuif · 21/03/2024 09:48

@ViciousCurrentBun ooh which one? I love Korean zombie horror.

BarryKentPoet · 21/03/2024 09:50

I've never known a Stephanie to use Fanny as a nickname, they are usually Steph, Steffie etc. I've only ever heard it used for Frances. Does anyone know a Stephanie who uses it?

AuntieDolly · 21/03/2024 09:51

That "ennui" is pronounced en-wee not en-u-I

Fuelledbylatte · 21/03/2024 09:51

Hahaha

To those Ghosts fans- yes!! It's the scene where Jennifer Saunders is saying 'Stephannnnieeee' the penny dropped!!!

What?! 😯

When he retired, my great uncle used to take himself off to crown court every single Thursday and Friday to watch cases. He loved it.

Edited to add what I've just found out: The phrase "swings and roundabouts" doesn't mean that everything's all brilliant being a child in a playground with all the swings and roundabouts to play on. It means somethings are good, somethings are bad. Makes zero sense, I prefer my understanding.

Fuelledbylatte · 21/03/2024 09:53

Google says;

Fanny is a feminine given name. Its origins include diminutives of the French name Frances meaning "free one", and of the name "Estefanía", a Spanish version of Stephanie, meaning "crown".

Dogs can't look up

Have you been watching Shaun of the Dead?

Have you been watching Shaun of the Dead?

Aah! I was going to suggest "The League of Gentlemen," or "Phoenix Nights," but you are correct.

MorrisZapp · 21/03/2024 09:59

Who ya gonna call?

I learned that Huey Lewis was lined up to have his song I Want a New Drug used as the main action theme for Ghostbusters. For licensing reasons, the song couldn't be used.

So they basically lifted it wholesale, gave it a ghosty lyric, and had it recorded by Ray Parker Jr who had a worldwide smash hit with it. Cue lawyers and controversy.

Check it out on YouTube, tiktok etc. It's the same damn song.

Jasmin1971 · 21/03/2024 10:16

That Elvis Costello had a hand in the first Specials record. Every day is a school day.

It makes sense if you say the expression correctly: "What you lose on the swings, you gain on the roundabouts." It's only because people are too lazy to say it in full that it ceases to make sense.

Edited

I think the saying is "what you gain on the swings you lose on the roundabout" but I might have lose and gain the wrong way round. It means it all works out the same in the end.

TheGoddessFrigg · 21/03/2024 10:47

That Americans don't use butter (or margarine) in sandwiches- which is why they always add mayonnaise.

Garfeel · 21/03/2024 11:09

Thank you for the explanation about the phrase "swings and roundabouts". I had no idea. Makes much more sense now.

But I still prefer my interpretation

DrJoanAllenby · 21/03/2024 11:13

I never knew until eight years ago that the curled up tail of dogs such as Pugs uncurl and straighten out when they are tired or sleeping.

My daughter has one and the first time I saw his tail all straight I thought it was was broken!

All my dogs have different tails to this that are straight or curved.

What? I thought a pony grew up to be a horse. Damn it!

I'd have written it "on-wee", but I realise it's the second half of the word which you were pointing out!

CharlotteBog · 21/03/2024 11:26

I know! Apparently they're like a different type of horse? And all baby horses are foals??

CharlotteBog · 21/03/2024 11:31

Carriemac · 21/03/2024 08:13

😂 did you actually genuinely not know this?

I did not. I will depart this earth a wiser woman!
I like ABBA songs as much as anyone else, and kind of know their names, but I'm no super fan so it's not like I'm thinking of them as Agnetha, Anni-Frid, Bjorn and Benny (yes I did just look this up on Wiki) on a daily basis.

CharlotteBog · 21/03/2024 11:33

delilabell · 21/03/2024 11:28

.....and here's me a biological scientist living in the county side.

So you can get a pony foal and a horse foal.
If I didn't need to get back to work I could spend the day education myself on all this horse/pony.

Dogs can't look up

I think it’s pigs that can’t look up isn’t it?

Iloveyoubut · 21/03/2024 11:36

That the white space between the E and X in the FedEx logo is a little white arrow by deliberate design, I see it everywhere now and never noticed it for years until it was pointed out to me.

More usually it’s short for Frances…
