In the mid- sixties, when I was much, much younger, my friends and I loved to go into phone boxes and look for unusual names in the phone directories. One fruitful time, we found E. Archie Bong Thompson and Waldemar Wurm. We were always being turfed out of the phone boxes by people wanting to actually use them to make a phone call.

I also know a Jenny Taylor and have wondered why The Times journalist Roger Boyes doesn't change his name!

There was a family who lived near us called the Varnishes. Varnish is an unusual enough surname anyway. So what did they call their son?

Neil. As close as you could possibly get to calling your son “Nail Varnish”. What possessed them?!

Also, my dad was at school with a John Swan and a Florence Lawrence. Just to make it weirder, they were cousins!

Mr Ottowallabillabong. Fabulous name.

I’ve worked with plastic surgeons called Mr Carver and Mr Hackett.

I once had a colleague who named his kid Timofei Head.

I also knew a Michael Hunt, back in primary school.

Some less exciting ones, but aptly named fast people from running with surnames Pace and another Race.
