Underwhelming Mumsnetter Recommendations

What things have you bought that've been highly and enthusiastically recommended by MNers and then turned out to be a bit a lot shit?

I have loads 😩Here's just a selection:

  • Heated airier: Giant monstrosity, flimsy as fuck, no different from a radiator.
  • Wool duvet: No warmer than a feather one, flat, looks shit on the bed, feels austere and not very luxurious.
  • Oddballs pants: Really strange gusset that constantly rides up into my fanny causing repeated yeast infections.
  • Loveall fleece leggings: Went bobbly after two wears and one wash, make my legs look fat, warm-ish but nothing to write home about.
  • Estee Laude double wear foundation: Heavy and claggy.
  • Birkenstocks: Made me look like a matronly Danish exchange student en-route to a mountain yoga retreat. Fortunately, I only tried them on and didn't buy them.
  • Fjallraven Kranken backpack: See above, Danish exchange student energy. Again, tried and did not buy.

What are yours?

One square of REALLY GOOD dark chocolate. Not only did it not satisfy the chocolate craving, I needed to eat a whole bar of Dairy Milk afterwards to take away the taste.

This made me laugh.

zoflora is a disinfectant some people throw it about like holywater ! I remember my Gran used it to clean her flats landing and front stairs.

My mum used to stick it down the drains.

Starspangledrodeopony · 04/03/2024 17:14

Here to join in with the Turtle Shitting Doves hand socks. Complete joke. It’s like the makers of them started it and it’s gained insane traction for no reason.

ItsAllAboutTheDosh · 04/03/2024 17:16

I was surprised when I saw zoflora on here. I have always seen it as an old fashioned thing that wilkos used to sell very cheaply. I too used to use it for dirty jobs instead of bleach.

I am CURRENTLY IN THIS HELL.

On the 12th of JANUARY I used one of those foot peel things that I found in the back of a cupboard and probably forgot about in 2016 or something.

I'd just read the fucking PRINCESSING thread and thought, "oh! I'll pop this on my feet while I clean the bathroom!"

My feet have been peeling and flaking for nearly two months. My sofa, bed, flooring is covered in piles of foot dandruff that need hoovering everyday.

I fear my feet will NEVER STOP FLAKING.

Chiropodists are refusing to treat my feet until they stop peeling.

It's potentially going to cost me £90
to find a footcare person who will help me.

Why do I fall for this shit?!

Oh...and it also means I currently in peak MN style cannot visit any of my "shoes off!" household friends because they will insist on my wearing their fucking "washable slippers" in their little MNy baskets by the door and that will mean I flake my disgusting foot dandruff all over their karndean floors because my heels are flaking to oblivion even through socks.

And my "indoor shoes" are apparently not to be trusted and I would be a vile specimen of a person determined to kill their floor licking teenagers with all the imaginary vermin wee on my (spotlessly clean, never worn outdoors) closed in shoes which hide my foot dandruff.

Stupid foot peel ruining my social life.

Ithinkitstimeforbed · 04/03/2024 17:32

@Sususudio if you like the Uniqlo ones then stick with them! These are okay as a cheap pair around the house with tops that cover my bum. I am 5ft 9 and they’re a bit short, size 8 and the small is so loose, there’s no sucking in or shaping. Mine are brown and you can see all the details of my knickers, imagine they just show every wobble on my leg (which I can’t see thankfully!) They are very very soft but I think they’re about 1/4 of the thickness of Lulus or sweaty Bettys. Everyone else on the thread seems to like them though? Not sure what I’m missing!

I love my Estee Lauder Double Wear. I use it very sparingly though. I also really like Elbow Grease spray (which I think is £1 in Savers so not really an aspirational middle class thing 😂). I like my Revlon One Step, as does my hair, but wouldn't give you tuppence for a Dyson hairdryer. Or a Dyson vacuum cleaner.

I've smelt a few of the perfumes that Mumsnetters say they really like, and I really don't like them, so I know not to try any now 😂

Portrait of a Lady? 🤢

That Milkshake leave in conditioner spray. It is absolute crap.

Yes^ It does nothing for my hair at all and smell only lasts while it's wet.

Mytholmroyd · 04/03/2024 17:46

I know a professional strings musician who lives in a drafty Georgian house who does like and wear the turtle dove cashmere fingerless gloves when she is practising.

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 04/03/2024 17:48

@Raccaccoonie and @SoOutingWhoCares

I bought Panda pillows for the whole family, not off the back of a recommendation but because we're all restless sleepers and ruin pillows within months, and these were on special offer in Costco. Love them. So comfy. Would definitely recommend.

Currently wearing my Turtle Doves hand warmers - love these too!

Having looked up One Hundred Stars I want several of their dresses Blush I am an influencer's dream it would seem!

The Big Hair was the failure I can remember. I should have known better that with really curly hair it just wasn't going to be do the job.

You could have been describing me apart from the fact that I hated the damn things and they got in the way of my playing!

PawsisShady · 04/03/2024 17:57

@SoOutingWhoCares might be a stupid question but have you tried soaking, exfoliating and going hard on moisturiser with them?

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 04/03/2024 17:58

I think a lot of the shit we are conned into buying on here is posted by shameless shills. It’s almost like it’s where “influencers” got the idea from.

So many things have gone ”viral” on here over the years. Even now there’s a threadload of sheep buying those Amazon leggings because someone decreed they are amazing 😂.

Yeah...I bought an electronic exfoliating foot file thing as well. It gets better for about 2 days and the flaking starts up again OR a massive bit of skin comes off and it can be quite deep and sore and I can't touch it for a few days.

Tried flexitol, o keefes, old school lanolin based Nivea etc and socks over the top. It's just a flaky hellish nightmare.

maypoll · 04/03/2024 18:00

Shark cordless vacuum cleaner. It stops working at least once a month, has to be taken a part while dust gets everywhere. Gets completely clogged up with hair that takes ages to remove. I absolutely hate it and have just replaced it.

😂 I am not a musician but maybe it depends on the instrument - she plays the viola da Gamba!

Are there better ones you would recommend with future presents in mind?

ssd · 04/03/2024 18:08

I cut my fringe a la the mumsnet way, twisting it up the way and snipping across. I ended up looking like Hambel from playschool. Not the best look on a 50+ woman..

They're definitely the worst fingerless gloves I've ever had.

My main problem in terms of playing has been bagging getting in the way of the strings and keys (I play 5 different instruments, 4 are strings) and they also make my palms sweat. Gamba is bigger/less "fingery" than most of my instruments so maybe less of an issue.

I tend to buy gloves in boutiques so no big names. The best ones have been crocheted in DK Baby by yours truly! So I guess they are "made to measure". Cost me about £2 to make!

ETA - A heated blanket has been a lifesaver for over my knees for practicing in my (draughty, Georgian!) music home studio.
as are very fluffy, chenille socks...maybe potential future gifts?

F&B is shit of the highest magnitude.

The guy who decorated my house refuses to use F&B paint. You can just get Johnstone's to colour match it.

I was insistent on having F&B wallpaper in our dining room. The instructions made no sense. The decorator called his mate to see if he had any experience of hanging F&B wallpaper - his mate actually laughed out loud over the phone, and ended the call with "Well, good luck pal" 😩

Oh god yes Farrow and bloody ball! The quality of finish was so poor, we had a professional in to sort out the room. He laughed and said the trade won’t touch it, recommended using a paint mixing service to match the F&B colour chart.

The book The Gift Of Fear is always being recommended on here (maybe by the same person every time? 🤔)

I thought it was utter tosh and gave it to charity.

So it was you!
Just had a mysterious pile of donated books appear in our work (NHS) staff room and that book is in it 👀

Now THAT is something I actually would recommend to everyone!

It really did save my life once, reading it as a teenager and another time, helped me to avoid being raped by a lecturer who was also a serial abuser.

That is quite the recommendation - what was it exactly it made you aware of?
