Underwhelming Mumsnetter Recommendations

What things have you bought that've been highly and enthusiastically recommended by MNers and then turned out to be a bit a lot shit?

I have loads 😩Here's just a selection:

  • Heated airier: Giant monstrosity, flimsy as fuck, no different from a radiator.
  • Wool duvet: No warmer than a feather one, flat, looks shit on the bed, feels austere and not very luxurious.
  • Oddballs pants: Really strange gusset that constantly rides up into my fanny causing repeated yeast infections.
  • Loveall fleece leggings: Went bobbly after two wears and one wash, make my legs look fat, warm-ish but nothing to write home about.
  • Estee Laude double wear foundation: Heavy and claggy.
  • Birkenstocks: Made me look like a matronly Danish exchange student en-route to a mountain yoga retreat. Fortunately, I only tried them on and didn't buy them.
  • Fjallraven Kranken backpack: See above, Danish exchange student energy. Again, tried and did not buy.

What are yours?

Nothing too hard but really laughing at your descriptions.

EndlesslyDistracted · 04/03/2024 09:55

Agree with the heated airer and I don't like the Danish backpacks but my feet love Birkenstocks.

I will add - Revlon hot air brush thing, doesn't dry very well and leaves the hair shapeless and full of static.

ssd · 04/03/2024 09:58

Im too tight to buy most of the suggestions on here, they all scream middle class mummies to me, birkenstocks and that backpack you mentioned are expensive, aimed at a certain market

Anyways, i liked your descriptions too

MeinKraft · 04/03/2024 10:01

Yeah I got Loveall jeggings, one size was much too small around the waist but fit perfectly everywhere else, the size up was hanging on me, waste of time that.

RokaandRoll · 04/03/2024 10:03

I fell for the babyliss big hair brush thing and it really damaged my hair.

Giggorata · 04/03/2024 10:06

“did you mean to be so rude?” Is rarely the crushing retort that is imagined.

I prefer the certainty of making it a statement, rather than a question or just telling them to fuck themselves, depending on how much you care about offending them, or how horrible they have been.

Cuppachuchu · 04/03/2024 10:06

I take all these swears by and recommendations with a huge pinch of salt. Especially if they come from China via Amazon as well.

TrichNamechange · 04/03/2024 10:07

Shark cordless hoovers. Utter shit.

However, I absolutely love my heated airer and I used to wear and love DoubleWear when my skin was worse. The trick is to do very thin layers.

friendlyflicka · 04/03/2024 10:08

pink Boots curl cream, Method cleaning products, Zoflora, Elbow Grease spray. Again, Double Wear foundation, Erborian CC, Victoria Beckham eyeliners, Charlotte Tilbury anything

I've been really trying over the last few years to spend money well - so paying premium prices for items that are really worth it. But I'm learning that when MN says "This is worth the premium price", it very often is not.

If we are talking about behaviour rather than products: a Breezy manner

MorrisZapp · 04/03/2024 10:09

That Milkshake leave in conditioner spray. It is absolute crap.

Teamarugula · 04/03/2024 10:09

Aw I love my Fjallraven backpack, I’ve got the one with the laptop pouch so it’s really handy for the commute and I got it off eBay for about £15.

I did go into Toast after seeing it had a MN thread dedicated to it and not being familiar but made a swift exit!

I also tried noom after hearing about it on here and it was shit if you already know anything about healthy eating.

Gibs0nGirl · 04/03/2024 10:10

A steam cleaner. No, condensation does not clean your floors like bleach does.

Cuppachuchu · 04/03/2024 10:11

Oh, yes, zoflora makes me gag (though maybe I have chosen the wrong fragrance) and method washing up liquid is not good at all. Ecover much better.

You haven't had to strip three years of ground on crud from a kitchen floor the night before the new buyers turn up then 🤣

Not my house, I hasten to add.

SoOutingWhoCares · 04/03/2024 10:13

Turtle Fucking Doves gloves!!!!!!!

Absolute rags that cost me nearly £50.

Always suggested on here as "naice" gifts, along with bloody well 1000 Stars Kimonos which imo are hideous. I'd be mortified to give these baggy bobbly cheap looking things to a friend, cashmere or not!

I swear they must have their marketing teams on here.

Also the other day someone said Boden T-Shirts are the only good quality ones left and someone else agreed...so gubbins here bought some online. Totally see through (despite being "double clothed") and again, rags...awful quality. Florence and Fred at Tesco is better quality!

I found the straps so thin and flimsy and they cut into my shoulders and it just kind of hung on my back and kept banging my spine. I found there was no decent weight distribution or cushioning on the straps. It felt to me like like quite a shit child's backpack.
I got a Samsonite instead and its much nicer.

I hear you about Toast. I've never bothered. I did pop into Sea Salt once when I had a spare twenty minutes after hearing all the good reviews on here. Good lord. What a load of boring, doudy, sensible shite. If I ever get a job as Kate Middleton's body double and need an outfit for opening a memorial garden in Milton Keynes, I'll go there.

Those bloody awful Lotus biscuits.

Made from cardboard and mouse droppings.

DrJoanAllenby · 04/03/2024 10:21

Who remembers the Hush harem trousers that lots raved over?

Beyond hideous! What they must have looked like walking about in them! 😂

Then I think there was an eBay version that were even more horrendous!

I've never heard of those Kimonos before. Just had a look.

😳😳
Blimey.
I got a few basically identical ones in Primark about twelve years ago when they were in fashion.

Apparently they're what every woman would universally want for any birthday or special occassion after the age of 35 @Limth according to MN of course!

Does anyone remember the amazon dresses and jumpsuits that people were buying in droves on here a few summers back...parachute/harem style and "ohmygosh they have POCKETS!!!"

Which leads me to another MN fail from 2018/19...Popsy dresses. I bought one, wore it once because it was just too twee. But people were mad for them on here for a while!

SirenSays · 04/03/2024 10:28

Anything boden - Kids tv presenter attire.
Eufy hoover - high maintenence nuisance that likes to drive near dirt
Fjallraven backpack - agree! hard and uncomfortable, felt like I stole it off a child
Dior glow - 3 times the price of anything similar and wose than them all.
veja trainers - never understood the hype. For years I thought they were a supermarket brand

YES!! I love a good jumpsuit but they were just ugly and ridiculous.

I've just had a look at Popsy dresses. Jesus. Very twee indeed.
