If you had to live near an ice rink?

If you had to live near an ice rink anywhere in the uk, where would you live? I want to move within walking distance of an ice pad and I have no connection to anywhere. Please can you hit me with your excellent suggestions? 🙏

Blackburn has a huge rink, lots of buses as it’s central, the town centre is not a particular nice area to live in but would be cheap.

StylishM · 03/03/2024 09:04

South Coventry - the Skydome is a nice rink

jakesnewcat · 03/03/2024 09:17

Telford

Dundee. Great rink with good ice for figure skaters. Thriving club and lots of coaches if you need one. Council run, so ice time not as expensive as at other rinks. Open all year. Easy to get budget accommodation. It's also been really friendly and welcoming whenever I've skated there. I like it so much, I've tried to persuade DH we should move to Dundee 😂

Kirkcaldy and Edinburgh Murrayfield both melt the ice April/May time, for the summer, so only part year skating.
Stirling is nice but small and during the curling season has limited ice availability.

The "hill" in the middle of the ice at Blackburn that they can't fix is terrible! Lighting is pretty poor as well, it's a very run down rink.

Do you have a budget for housing? Being near Solihull ice rink is going to be a lot more expensive than Billingham for example.

Solihull ice rink is in one of the most affordable parts of Solihull though

Surely most places other than very rural are within reasonable distance from an ice rink

I was intrigued by this. I live in London zone 3. I’ve googled nearest ones and there are none anywhere near me. Only some at xmas time - ‘winter wonderland’ type things at attractions like Somerset House. And I don’t think that’s what the OP wants

Correction: the Queensway one is 45 mins on public transport on a good day, so allow an hour.

I've lived all over but never within walking distance of an ice rink, to me they are quite a rare beast, clearly I've missed out 😀

Stirling

Is there still an ice rink? Where is it?

3drag0ns · 03/03/2024 09:47

Worthing ice rink?

My daughter skates at altrincham but we are moving down south so I've had a look at my new nearest one, and it be Worthing ice rink if anybody knows of it!

@Whatevershallidowithmylife yes there is, it’s quite central at The Peak, run by Active Stirling. It’s very popular with lots of lessons. There is also a separate facility for curling at the the same location,

Murrayfield in Edinburgh. You could live in Corstorphine, Murrayfield, Roseburn, Carrick Knowe, Gorgie, Dalry. Loads of places really.

There's not one within 2 hour of us and we're in a city

Runnerduck34 · 03/03/2024 11:22

Ices rinks in Nottingham and Gillingham Kent if you wanted to look at either location.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/03/2024 12:09

Doncaster Dome - not a bad part of Doncaster, residential areas nearby, split level ice rink!

Murrayfield is going to melt the ice at the end of April and not relay it till September, this year. Due to this, and the lack of patch ice, there's hardly any coaches now, compared to before the pandemic. Most Edinburgh figure skaters have either completely moved rink, or are travelling to Stirling, Kirkcaldy and Dundee for more ice time.

I live near Bath and the nearest rink is the other side of Bristol...According to Google Maps, it's a 2 and a half hour round trip. hardly "reasonable distance" IMO.

Beezknees · 03/03/2024 12:46

I'm from Nottingham, we have a good ice rink (and a pro ice hockey team) and it's one of the more affordable parts of the country.

Cool! I hadn't realised so thank you!

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 03/03/2024 19:17

City centre, Lenton, Sneinton or Mapperly Nottingham (don't move to St Ann's)

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 03/03/2024 19:20

And if your not objectionable to a 30 minute tram or bus journey you could look at;

Hucknall
Basford
Bulwell
Beeston
Chilwell
Stapleford
Attenborough
Clifton
Sherwood

NotMeNoNo · 03/03/2024 19:38

Agree Nottingham has good transport, affordable and is also pretty cycle-able if you are that way inclined. The Ice Centre is very central as well, Are you going to make a shortlist and visit a few places?

FloofCloud · 03/03/2024 19:40

Nottingham - cheaper rentals, loads of house shares in the area, great rink and great city!

Notateacheranymore · 03/03/2024 19:42

Nottingham, for that is where the National Ice Centre is. It’s the premier ice skating location in the country.

And having 2 universities and a couple of colleges means there are plenty of house share opportunities. Also, the rental prices are at the lower end of the national average.

c3pu · 03/03/2024 19:42

Gosport has one, but it's far from a desirable place to live (first hand experience lol)
