If you had to live near an ice rink anywhere in the uk, where would you live? I want to move within walking distance of an ice pad and I have no connection to anywhere. Please can you hit me with your excellent suggestions? 🙏

It has barely changed at all. New paint job around the ground floor but that's it. The ceiling panels of 30 years ago now hang, terrifyingly, from the roof. Seriously, the place feels unsafe.

Bradford has an ice rink and housing is cheap as chips. Will definitely be houseshares within 20 mins walk as it's close to the uni

Fifthtimelucky · 02/03/2024 22:42

Guildford is good. My daughter lives about 15 minutes walk from the ice rink there.

It's not a particularly cheap place to live though.

Stirling, Scotland. And also cheaper part of the UK… what’s your budget house wise?

There's an ice rink in Cardiff Bay - it's a great place to live too!

Did the rink in cardiff move areas recently?

They got rid of the old one and have built a new one. It's fab, the Cardiff Devils ice hockey team are based there. Cardiff is a fantastic city to live in and reasonably priced 👍

Milton Keynes

Uttoxeter. Reasonable house prices and close to the Peak District which is lovely

If ice is the main purpose and you are honestly not fussed where then I would start by looking at sessions times and prices. I live 5 minutes from a rink and have previously lived 5 minutes from a different one. One was planet ice and one was council and let me just say costs and usage are much worse at PI rinks than they are at others.

Romford is a deceptively nice rink but living costs likely more, similarly all the London rinks. Ally Pally has the building wow factor if that’s important. Milton Keynes is right next to the train station there which possibly opens up other areas as well and loads of accommodation will be walking distance and they are currently doing a bike rental scheme similar to London which might help access. If you want nice area that happens to have a rink then Whitley Bay but the rink itself is a biohazard compared to some (look in Tynemouth for nice area to live) and on the metro to Gateshead/Newcastle for bigger city access.

fredinner · 02/03/2024 23:11

Lea Valley has a recently refurbished ice rink, 2 Olympic size rinks. Cheaper than the area around Ally Pally although still London prices.

IhateJan22 · 02/03/2024 23:15

Blackburn? Defo cheap housing nearby.

myavocadoisgrowing · 02/03/2024 23:17

Filton near Bristol - relatively new and right on M5 junction.

MissMelanieH · 02/03/2024 23:17

Widnes (near Liverpool) has an ice-rink and would be cheap to live near I imagine

Loads of good ideas here. I am checking out Dundonald. I have never been to NI and always wanted to go!

Solihull

LER83 · 02/03/2024 23:34

Chelmsford, Essex. Loads of flats all around the leisure center, short walk also to train station and city centre.

ThisHonestQuail · 02/03/2024 23:41

Inverness has an ice rink that’s very close to town.

The other Stirling doesnt have an ice rink

What other Stirling?

sintas · 02/03/2024 23:46

Depends what you want from the ice rink as some are better than others. Just a bit of leisure skating or more?

Anoisagusaris · 02/03/2024 23:59

I’m amazed at all the places in the UK that have ice rinks. There isn’t a single one in Ireland (Republic), except the temporary ones that open at Christmas time. There were 2 in Dublin when I was growing up.

MummyDummyNow · 02/03/2024 23:59

Oxford.

Wrongsideofpennines · 03/03/2024 00:12

Hull. There is cheap housing within walking distance of the rink.
