If you had to live near an ice rink?

If you had to live near an ice rink anywhere in the uk, where would you live? I want to move within walking distance of an ice pad and I have no connection to anywhere. Please can you hit me with your excellent suggestions? 🙏

Chelmsford has an ice rink very close to the town centre

Raywayy · 02/03/2024 19:31

Lol not a professional but I am seeking a big drastic move for personal reasons and a long round trip startung at sparrow's fart is not working out for me.

Agree with Guildford.

Kinross

Although lots of rinks in Scotland prioritise curling over skating

The nearest rink to where I live in Lancashire is a curling rink - and rural. The nearest cities to us don't have an ice rink though.

Penarth Marina, I’d say. Short walk across the Pont y Werin bridge and you’re there.

ManchesterGirl2 · 02/03/2024 19:38

I love your moving criteria. 😊 Hope you are very happy at your new ice rink.

Surely most places other than very rural are within reasonable distance from an ice rink

OP said walkable distance though. There's only 2 ice rinks in the whole of Wales, for example, so no lots of places aren't reasonable and definitely not walking distance near them.

meemeeme · 02/03/2024 19:42

Murrayfield in Edinburgh (might be biased because I live in Edinburgh, albeit not anywhere near there!). It's a nice area, though can get a bit crazy when there's a big concert or rugby match on.

Did the rink in cardiff move areas recently?

In 2006 ? 😂
although tbf the current building has 'only' been there since 2016.
any budget on house price/rent OP, might help narrow it down. Also any special features etc.

Tarmacadamia · 02/03/2024 19:43

Hull! Some great places to live around the Marina/Old Town really close to the ice arena.

SgtJuneAckland · 02/03/2024 19:51

I need to turn notifications off, please read my second post before telling me there's no ice rink in walking distance in various UK locations
Cancel the cheque!

Slough

There was a temporary one? Now a permanent one? And it's on the same site?

I think rents will vary a lot and there will be more shares in some areas than others so I'm going to start looking into the areas around a few of them.

Perth - although I'm pretty sure it's at risk of closure and they melt the ice for part of the year to save costs.

Elgin. You could meet up with the poster looking to move up there.

CuteCillian · 02/03/2024 19:59

Can't believe no one has said Coventry

Gladespade · 02/03/2024 20:04

Tamworth has the snowdome, it’s a very reasonably priced area and has good connections by train to London and Birmingham.

1990s · 02/03/2024 20:05

Telford does have a good ice rink and Shropshire is lovely and has loads to do. The town centre is fine, has various things you want and need.

RJnomore1 · 02/03/2024 20:11

Auchenharvie rink in Stevenston has some of the best ice in Scotland I believe. It’s also near the sea and not an expensive area.

Raywayy · 02/03/2024 20:12

Is Tamworth a full size rink?

Runninghappy · 02/03/2024 20:12

also depends whether you’re interested in joining any synchro teams, have or give lessons etc. Check patch times - obviously always early! Sheffield or Nottingham with two pads makes it easier to book ice time. Slough is our local rink and Ryan and Dani have an amazing adult synchro team. There are some parts that would be ok to live in but not sure I’d want to walk there early on my own! Sometimes even walking from the car park is scary 🤣

Larasbra · 02/03/2024 20:13

Another vote for Altrincham

Brenna24 · 02/03/2024 20:18

Ardler and Charleston are both areas of Dundee that are walking distance to the ice rink. Both quite cheap on rent and as a bonus also close to the country park and plenty of bus links to other places as well.

Walkthelakes · 02/03/2024 20:22

I think I would say Sheffield. There are lots of lovely houseshares in places like Sharrow/Nether Edge/Abbeydale that are walking distance to the ice rink but you can also go out to the Peak District and go to nice cafes. I loved living in that bit of Sheffield when I was younger

I’m over an hour from an ice rink and whilst I live in ‘the country’ I’m within 30 mins of at least 5 or 6 ‘big towns’.
