If you had to live near an ice rink?

If you had to live near an ice rink anywhere in the uk, where would you live? I want to move within walking distance of an ice pad and I have no connection to anywhere. Please can you hit me with your excellent suggestions? 🙏

Another vote for Sheffield, Ice Sheffield is an excellent ice rink

Surely most places other than very rural are within reasonable distance from an ice rink

Considering there's only about 50 ice rinks across the entire UK, no most places are not within walking distance of an ice rink. We live in a town and our nearest ice rink is about 12/13 miles away, which at rush hour is a 1.5 hour drive each way.
As far as I know, there's only one ice rink in Wales too.

Which other criteria would be relevant to your decision?

Would you be looking for work in the area you move to?

Would you be studying?

I was going to suggest Queens, but that would mean looking for a shared flat in London.

Two other places I might suggest would be Milton Keynes or Cambridge.

Another vote for Ally Pally!

Isthisreasonable · 03/03/2024 00:57

Definitely not Tamworth. It's not a rink for a skater wanting patch ice. They do lessons but only to a basic level. Nottingham, Coventry or Solihull would meet the requirement for a decent rink.

MissSookieStackhouse · 03/03/2024 01:47

Another vote for Chelmsford.

RogueFemale · 03/03/2024 01:53

It seems quite a gamble to move house based on proximity to an ice-rink, which might close down if there aren't enough punters. If rink essential, then move to a very big city where there are a few.

East Kilbride not far from Glasgow. Lowish rents etc. https://x.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1570832839318605824?s=20

NOT Gillingham Kent

HiCandles · 03/03/2024 03:53

🤣🤣🤣

No, they're really not.

thasratelass · 03/03/2024 07:02

Doncaster has a large ice rink although I wouldn't recommend it as a place to live. So does Sheffield.

piefacedClique · 03/03/2024 07:07

the rink in Cardiff is in a lovely location. Down in Cardiff Bay. The world is your oyster in terms of budget for accommodation there….. all price brackets available within a 45 min walk

FinallyHere · 03/03/2024 07:10

Housing in Slough very affordable for the south eat, also good links to Heathrow

South East

RogersOrganismicProcess · 03/03/2024 07:13

Widnes, is v cheap to live in and has good major transport links. The ice rink is set amongst other leisure facilities and shops, so pretty much everything will be on your doorstep if you don’t drive. There are some nice outdoor spaces, locally too.

AndThatWasNY · 03/03/2024 07:18

If you didn't mind getting public transport. Altrincham opens up most of Manchester. Altrincham is expensive. Loads of brilliant places on the tram route.

Parkermumma07 · 02/03/2024 19:13

Blackburn if you want somewhere very cheap

That's our nearest one, we are near Clitheroe - was looking at where a 45 min radius got you to as I wondered if you could get to Wilpshire or Mellor but not apparently. Agree OP that will be cheap.

TorroFerney · 03/03/2024 07:23

SoOutingWhoCares · 02/03/2024 20:43

Also definitely NOT Blackburn or Blackpool!

Ice quality at Blackburn is shocking (there's a mini hill lol!) and Blackpool isn't a full sized rink and practice time is limited due to the Hot Ice Show who rehearse during the day and also perform show twice a day in the season.

Guilford is probably my favourite. Altrincham's pretty nice too.

Poor Blackburn, I like to think of the mini hill as an homage to Pendle! It will be cheap to live there and op can do her shopping at the big Asda.

Gemütlich81 · 03/03/2024 08:51

Nottingham city centre and plenty of house shares in Sneinton/Sherwood/West Bridgford.

SardineJam · 03/03/2024 08:54

As a couple of PP have mentioned, Swindon ice rink is surrounded by housing, you have Grange Park, Westlea and Shaw, right on the doorstep
