If you had to live near an ice rink?

If you had to live near an ice rink anywhere in the uk, where would you live? I want to move within walking distance of an ice pad and I have no connection to anywhere. Please can you hit me with your excellent suggestions? 🙏

I think I would say Sheffield. There are lots of lovely houseshares in places like Sharrow/Nether Edge/Abbeydale that are walking distance to the ice rink but you can also go out to the Peak District and go to nice cafes. I loved living in that bit of Sheffield when I was younger

It's 4.5 miles from Hunter's Bar to Ice Sheffield, which might be the edge of "walking distance" for a frequent journey, especially as it's not through the nicest places.

VerbenaGirl · 02/03/2024 20:33

Chelmsford?

SoOutingWhoCares · 02/03/2024 20:36

I was going to say Nottingham or Sheffield but I think there'd be too much competition for patch.

So I'm going to say Widnes or Kirkcaldy.

Gillingham, Kent.

Tr1skel1on · 02/03/2024 20:43

Aberdeen has an ice rink by the beach

SoOutingWhoCares · 02/03/2024 20:43

Also definitely NOT Blackburn or Blackpool!

Ice quality at Blackburn is shocking (there's a mini hill lol!) and Blackpool isn't a full sized rink and practice time is limited due to the Hot Ice Show who rehearse during the day and also perform show twice a day in the season.

Guilford is probably my favourite. Altrincham's pretty nice too.

Dorsetlover · 02/03/2024 20:48

Unless it is a national centre surely there is a chance it might close down at some point.

SecondStarOnTheRight · 02/03/2024 20:56

I'm not sure what Hull's ice rink is like as I've not been for about 15 years, but its very close to reasonably priced housing and only a short walk to the city centre. There was talk of a new ice rink opening in the centre itself but I'm not sure if that's fallen through.

I also wouldn't be wanting to walk alone at 6am in the areas around the ice rinks in those towns either.

If you go for Nottingham you could live in West Bridgford and walk over Trent Bridge and up London Road (30 mins), The Meadows (15-20 mins), or flat share somewhere in the Hockley/ Lace Market area (5 mins).

Did the rink in cardiff move areas recently?

It’s in Cardiff Bay. Lots of flats for rent/sale there

Whatthechicken · 02/03/2024 21:11

Hull - some lovely properties on the Marina to rent nearby and it's cheap- I used to. But it is Hull.

Dundonald in Northern Ireland

Nothingbuttheglory · 02/03/2024 21:17

Whitley bay!

It pains me to say this, but despite the manifold joys and wonders of this part of the world, Whitley Bay Ice Rink is an utter dump.

MrsPerfect12 · 02/03/2024 21:19

If you want lessons research the coach - especially if you want to compete.

VioletDisco · 02/03/2024 21:26

The ice rink in Altrincham is literally right next to the transport interchange for buses/trains/trams which may be useful.

Lesina · 02/03/2024 21:28

Nottingham has a great ice rink,

Crazymadchickenlady · 02/03/2024 21:34

Just looked lots to rent by the ice rink in Cardiff Bay and it’s a nice area right on the water.

Surely most places other than very rural are within reasonable distance from an ice rink

No ice rinks in the south west at all!

parietal · 02/03/2024 21:52

Kelso. lovely little town in the scottish borders with an ice rink and a curling club. lots of houses are a short walk to the ice rink and affordable.

Sheffield south Yorkshire, thinks there might be one in Barnsley too

Sheffield Ice Arena is fantastic, been there so many times with my son playing ice hockey. But we live in Leeds. Our ice arena is in a bit of a dismay area. Yes it is oooosite the police station and right next door to Leeds Utd ground, but the area !!

thereweretwosistersidebyside · 02/03/2024 21:59

Ally pally! Used to skate there myself as a kid and to my delight, dd has just started lessons there! Had a whizz round myself today #stillgotit 🤣

Lol I agree but assumed that was standard ice rink vibe. Do you mean others are actually nice??

I was a regular at Whitley Bay ice rink in my youth. Shame to read it's a dump now. It was never flash but preteen me loved going.
