If you had to live near an ice rink?

If you had to live near an ice rink anywhere in the uk, where would you live? I want to move within walking distance of an ice pad and I have no connection to anywhere. Please can you hit me with your excellent suggestions? 🙏

Loads of good ideas here. I am checking out Dundonald. I have never been to NI and always wanted to go!

Cardiff?

PuttingDownRoots · 02/03/2024 18:58

Doncaster has a split level Ice rink. And is definitely cheap.

Raywayy · 02/03/2024 18:58

Did the rink in cardiff move areas recently?

My immediate thought was Altrincham.

TobiasForgesContactLense · 02/03/2024 19:00

Telford has quire cheap housing although I am not sure that I would want to live in the areas close to the ice rink. It is by the town centre though so east to get there by public transport.

It's in Cardiff bay, has been for years. They closed one of their pads last year which may be what you're referring to? Cardiff Bay / Penarth is a nice place to live so could be a good choice

Surely most places other than very rural are within reasonable distance from an ice rink

@SgtJuneAckland

walking distance??

my 'local' is 20 miles. The houses in walking distance are not in a great area

LakeTiticaca · 02/03/2024 19:01

Blackpool. They have one at pleasure Beach 😁

Singleandproud · 02/03/2024 19:02

@Antsinmypantsneedtodance sorry I meant 3 hour round trip.

@EdithWeston Planet Ice closed well over a decade ago sadly.

LaWench · 02/03/2024 19:04

In the NW I'd say Altrincham but houses can be pricy. For cheaper housing, try Widnes.

Raywayy · 02/03/2024 19:04

So many votes for Altrincham. I have never been in that area either. Googling now!

Nottingham, has a great ice rink on the edge of the centre of town. You could walk there from lots of different areas depending on your budget.

jellytots18 · 02/03/2024 19:05

Chelmsford :)

ohtowinthelottery · 02/03/2024 19:06

Telford

SgtJuneAckland · 02/03/2024 19:06

Apologies OP I missed the walking aspect.

PP I have been to Norfolk and have family who live there but I've never been there for ice rink access

PrimalLass · 02/03/2024 19:07

The Ninewells area of Dundee.

Why do you need to live so close to an ice rink? As it might be relevant.

we have one close to us but it is usually booked by the different ice hockey teams, childrens ice skating lessons, curling etc so there is very limited public use.

LucyTeatime · 02/03/2024 19:08

Nottingham has the best ice rink in the country.

Two pads so there's lots of public ice plus a second pad for serious practising.

Sheffield south Yorkshire, thinks there might be one in Barnsley too

I love Sheffield, but walking distance from the ice rink doesn't give you the nicest residential places, although it is on the tram.

The ice rink in Barnsley closed several years ago.

CryHavoc · 02/03/2024 19:09

I live in Penarth, and can walk to the Cardiff rink. My daughter skates there (recreationally) and loves being so close.

You think the whole country, apart from maybe deepest Scotland, lives within 45 minutes walk of an ice rink????

I have no idea where our nearest ice rink is, but it will be more than 45 minutes walk away and I don't live rurally.

Genuinelyenquiring · 02/03/2024 19:10

If you want to live in London then streatham has great ice rink.

FairfaxAikmann · 02/03/2024 19:10

Any rink used by one of the top ice hockey teams - the ice is a million times better than the leisure rinks
