I'm flying over from Belfast for the night on 8 March to see my son who is in first year at John Moore's university.

I want to take him for a slap up meal on the Friday night and would like to have it booked in advance. I'm looking for recommendations for decent mid range restaurants that do (in order of preference):
Italian
Roast dinners
Mexican
Steakhouse
Indian

And my budget is about £100 for the two of including a couple of drinks with the meal.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Someone had recommended Buyers Club and Bacaro Salthouse, so don't know if either of those are good, they look very nice though.

My son mentioned a place called Gaucho Steakhouse but it looked really expensive, some of the steak dinners £40 plus quid before you even order your sides.

I really love Elif, the original Lark Lane venue, but there is one on the Childwall Fiveways and one on Bold St in town. Amazing Turkish bbq. The spiced chicken wings were delicious.

Yes, second this!

Thanks all, you Liverpudlians are a friendly and helpful bunch to be sure 🙌🏻🤯

@Kitkat1523 did you get the dessert trolly? It's amazing!

MammaTo · 05/03/2024 12:19

Cucina di Vincenzo for an Italian

@Lilifer , I'm not a huge fan of Il Forno, but thought you might be interested to check out the Duke Street Food Market, which is on the same road as it. I've not been but heard good reports about it.

Duke Street Food & Drink Market (dukestreetmarket.com)

My dc and I love to visit Renshaw Street Food Market (just near Chinatown by the bombed out church), but that has more of an Asian flavour. My ds1 love to go and get a massive bowl of DIY noodles there!

@Zhx3 do you have to book that do you know? 🤔

Renshaw Street you just turn up, although it's busy Friday and Saturday evenings, that's the only time I've not been able to get a seat.

If you love noodles, can I recommend Big Bowl Noodle on Berry Street, just opposite the bombed out church. It's one of my favourite places in Liverpool and so cheap, all this for under £14.

The desert trolley! Definately ! …. no menu….just a feast of sweet treats right there to be chosen! …… i think I may again go next weekend now !

Toddlerteaplease · 06/03/2024 10:45

@Kitkat1523 to much pressure to choose quickly though. It was hard. 😂

Sliceofrice · 06/03/2024 10:56

There's 3 Moose Coffees in Lpool. If you go to the one on Hope Street pop across the road the The Philharmonic Pub and ask to go in the bloke's toilets.

ScouseOfCards · 06/03/2024 11:27

Mowgli is brilliant for dinner and I would definitely recommend heading to The Quarter for breakfast/brunch/lunch.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/03/2024 11:28

I love Moose coffee! I have one of their posters in my bedroom. The astronaut
Moose.

It's Liverpool, even our toilets are Grade 1 listed......

morningsnig · 06/03/2024 11:39

The toilets in The Phil are a sight to behold. Gents more than ladies I believe

SpiritOfEdna · 06/03/2024 11:58

Italian Fish - top of Bold Street - very nice food - good portions as well
Mowgli - Indian, small plates. Tamarind chips - amazing, dahl not so.
Salthouse Bacaro - small plates Italian. Very nice - was busy when I went a couple of Sundays ago - you would need to book.
Casa Italia - Italian. Menu not changed (nor have the waiters!) since the 80s but the food is good & basic. It was the height of sophistication when I was 16, not so much now 😄but is a Liverpool institution as mentioned upthread and you would have to queue if you go.

Another vote for the pizza at Rudys. Castle Street branch is nicer than the Albert Dock one.
Would not recommend Madre in the Albert Dock - the food was inedible the one time I went and service was poor.

Enjoy!

I'm actually booked for brunch on Saturday at moose coffee on hope st - I'm intrigued but also a bit scared of just wandering into a men's loo 🥹

My son likes the look of The Italian Club and I've made a tentative booking, is that a good choice, we really love our pasta and pizza 🙌🏻

The Italian Club is lovely, sure you’ll have a great time :) There are also plenty of bars nearby. Recently stumbled across a little bar called Bunch on Berry Street (just round the corner from TIC), was really cosy and the drinks were amazing. They just ask you what sort of thing you’re in the mood for and bring you something to suit your mood and taste. Tabac at the top if Bold Street is nice too. Also recommend the Grapes pub just behind the bombed out church!

Although Liv City Centre is small and there are millions of bars around, and I’m sure your son will be pretty clued up on good places to grab a drink :)

There are loads of nice little pubs around Bold Street where The Italian Club is (great restaurant).
Pogue Mahone's Seel Street, Danny Macs Renshaw Street, The Dispensary next door to Danny Macs.
For breakfast Maggie May's at the top of Bold Street.
In fact if you only stay around the Bold Street area you'll find most of what you're looking for.
Have a great time ... you can ask anyone in Liverpool for directions if you get lost we're a very friendly city.
