I'm flying over from Belfast for the night on 8 March to see my son who is in first year at John Moore's university.

I want to take him for a slap up meal on the Friday night and would like to have it booked in advance. I'm looking for recommendations for decent mid range restaurants that do (in order of preference):
Italian
Roast dinners
Mexican
Steakhouse
Indian

And my budget is about £100 for the two of including a couple of drinks with the meal.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Someone had recommended Buyers Club and Bacaro Salthouse, so don't know if either of those are good, they look very nice though.

My son mentioned a place called Gaucho Steakhouse but it looked really expensive, some of the steak dinners £40 plus quid before you even order your sides.

I second the cowshed for steak and absolutely love Bacaro. Mowgli for Indian for sure.

Probably not one for your visit but the new-ish place called Nord is great.

If you were after something pre or post dinner, the Oracle bar is fabulous. You need to book and there is a charge but for a drink or 2 it's fab. My mind is still blown!

Salthouse Bacaro is excellent - small plates.
Italian Club Fish.
The Quarter on Falkner Street - more relaxed, but nice pasta and a lovely part of town.

Not Casa Italia!

Lilifer · 27/02/2024 20:32

Gotta say Il Forno is looking the favourite at the moment!

Ps, hope your lad is enjoying Liverpool life 😊

But I will check out all of these recommendations as I take my food research very very seriously 😅

Also I am very open to Tapas myself but just was worried my 6ft 5 strapping son might want quantity and big chunky steaks of pasta dishes

He's LOVING it! His brother wants to follow him to John Moore's this September (also helps they are avid LFC fans 😀)

I went to Il Forno with a friend who is a food and drink expert. She asked the year of one of the wines and ordered it. The waiters brought a side table, decanter and strainer and served the wine. My friend said mark of a great restaurant, they knew exactly what was needed with that vintage. So, excellent choice OP!

Oh thank you! Yes it would be lovely to have a fancy bar to go to afterwards 🙌🏻

He should get a job stewarding there.

The Casa Italia is a bit of a Liverpool icon but it's nothing special.

Lilifer · 27/02/2024 20:37

Oh wow @Obsidious that's really fantastic to know, I'm a big wine fan myself so that sounds like it would suit me perfectly ❤️🙌🏻

Yes and there seems to be so many other better Italian places in the city too

Moose coffee is great for brunch.

Brilliant! I'm planning brunch for the Saturday before I fly home so I'll book that too thanks 🤩

The Quarter is really nice! If you don’t go there for your evening out, it’s a great place for breakfast/brunch

Yeah I love it for nostalgia (my Nan used to take us as kids) but its not a special occasion place although generous portions & tasty! You can only book for large parties, you queue (sometimes for a while) otherwise

Love both the Salthouses - both bacaro & tapas! Quarter also nice as mentioned above!

Iamanunsafebuilding · 27/02/2024 21:04

My DS did 4 years at LJMU and loved it, he had a ball living in Liverpool. Moose brunch is lush!

Moose coffee is great for brunch.

Moose used to be within walking distance to me before they moved to Liverpool, probably a good thing as its never the healthy option but a great treat! Love it there.

If you're on Instagram OP then Liverpool_eats always has good recommendations. Baltic market has some good options but not city centre, Albert Schloss is popular too, very busy!

QueenJaineApproximately · 28/02/2024 00:24

HI OP
Think it’s called Tavola Deli… have heard good things about it and gets great reviews so might be worth checking out. 😁

mjf981 · 28/02/2024 01:12

Ah what a nice thread. Enjoy Liverpool and time with your son OP :)

Watervolt · 28/02/2024 02:46

Just back from Liverpool. The Indian restaurant Sanskruti was a real stand-out of our trip.

Obsidious · 28/02/2024 07:56

Me too @Bananajam. I do like a brekkie at the Azul Monkey though

eveoha · 28/02/2024 08:10

Please do not waste your time and £sd on any of the a/mentioned fly by nights - stay out of Liverpool city centre and g to Delifonseca - you won’t be disappointed I can assure you - There’s also a shop/deli where you could buy a some treats for yourself and son - Have a lovely time - but do tog up as it’s going to be a bit chilly 🥶👍☘️🕊️

LetMeGoogleThat · 28/02/2024 08:12

Another vote for mowgli, but also love Rudy's for the most amazing pizza. Either branch!
