Why are modern dinner plates so fucking massive???

They're HUGE. We're replacing our 1980s dinner set...it's time ... Too many broken, cracked/chipped now.

Looking at new sets..oh my god they're HUGE. Our dinner plates are 24.5cm including rim. Now they're all 27cm+??

Anyone know where you can get a sensible sized dinner plate these days?

When you find one let me know! It's my life's work to find dinner plates that don't stop my dishwasher washing properly.

Deanefan · 24/02/2024 09:17

We have Denby Greenwich (wedding present over 20 years old) the dinner plates are indeed massive but we have a lot of the medium plates too in the accent design and they are around 24.5cm. The large ones are useful for big roast dinners and the teenagers - who then have a medium plate for the extra roasties and yorkshire puds that won’t fit on the main plate!
So take a look at Denby they tend to produce standard shapes and sizes in all the colours/patterns.

I agree. I’m managing my diet due to a health issue and I’m eating from a bowl to manage portion sizes a bit better. Dinner plates are massive and all sets seem to come in standard sizing.

I think I'm going to have to look on eBay and market place 😬

Try buying vintage from Ebay. My parents still have their Pyrex Chelsea pattern china that was a wedding present in 1968. The plates seem so small to me compared to ours.

dementedpixie · 24/02/2024 09:39

We have this ikea dinner set. Largest plate is 25x25. We needed this size to fit in the dishwasher

Defender90 · 24/02/2024 09:42

I recently got the Malvern set from next, the plates are massive but they've got a really wide rim so you aren't tempted to overfill the plate.

whoami24601 · 24/02/2024 09:50

This has been a thing for quite a while - we got our dinner service as a wedding present 15 years ago and had been happily using it for about 2 years. We moved back in with my parents and I was horrified to find our 'side' plates were exactly the same size as their dinner plates!

DGPP · 24/02/2024 09:51

I love the big dinner plates. But the side plates might be what you’re after. Denby has a good range and measurements

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 24/02/2024 09:55

I use pasta bowls as my main dinner plate now

Predictabilitypreferred · 24/02/2024 09:55

Agreed. It actually hurts my wrist to hold some of these plates, they're heavy!
I have one of those old white and brown speckled plates that used to belong to my grandmother, it must be at least 40 years old, it's between the size of a saucer and a modern dinner plate. It's my absolute favourite plate to use and doesn't have a single chip!

SunflowerSeeds123 · 24/02/2024 09:58

I have also been wondering this. My plates are massive! I need to lose weight so I'm going to charity shops to find old-fashioned plates from yester-year!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/02/2024 09:59

Oh man! This has been doing my head in for years. I just thought the dishwashers were too small😳

Dilbertian · 24/02/2024 09:59

I'm pretty sure Ikea do dinner plates that are not massive.

blitzen · 24/02/2024 10:01

Not what you're asking, but you can actually adjust the height of your shelf in the dishwasher to accommodate bigger plates. Google it and you'll see how to do it x

AinsleyHayes · 24/02/2024 10:04

I feel your pain. We have Denby White as our wedding china and we use everything every day EXCEPT for the dinner plates, which are 29cm and do not fit in our dishwasher (not all dishwashers have an adjustable upper basket). I looked for replacements the other day and saw that they now do an extra large 31.5cm plate in the range. Fuck knows who asked for that.

We've got a couple of those plates and they still seem huge compared to my 'posh' (£5 a plate) set I bought from M&S about ten years ago.

It's not a problem, though - as long as you don't feel obliged to cover every scrap of the surface when dishing up and the sink isn't stupidly small side eyes crappy kitchen design I can't afford to replace.

Edited

I can see the purpose; I have one giant plate that gets used for serving extra-large pizzas.

Same here!

xSideshowAuntSallyx · 24/02/2024 10:07

I was going to suggest IKEA as well.

Mine are massive (and square), I find the bowls to mine are huge. I weighed out the recommended amount of cereal the other day, put it in my bowl and it looked like hardly anything.

SomersetTart · 24/02/2024 10:10

I replaced my wedding set after 30 years and have really struggled to get something that is good quality and doesn't look as though it was made for giants. I've ended up buying old stuff from charity shops - the kind of sets people were given for wedding presents and just kept in a glass cabinet for30 years. I've found it's all dishwasher size and proof but not microwavable - perhaps predating microwaves?

Because we are so fucking greedy.
