Putting washing on the line in the sun

I apologise if this is a niche pleasure - but does anyone else get a huge pleasure from seeing big sheets on the washing line in the sun?

Maybe it's a childhood thing.

I've had washing out most weeks all winter, I can usually find a dry morning at some point.
I love folding away clothes still warm from the sun, it's like putting sunshine in my wardrobe.
Line dried stuff smells better, is less staticky, and sunshine bleaches out stains.

Tumbleweed101 · 23/02/2024 17:43

I visited a friend in Montana last summer, lovely open prairies full of sun and a nice breeze but apparently it is to dusty to dry washing outside. I'm not convinced but didn't argue.

Oh God yes!!!!!

The smell of sunshine from washing on the line is just something else. Best night's sleep ever in bedsheets straight off the line.

Oh no
i can’t use them straight from the line, they have to go in the airing cupboard first, same with clothes, can’t wear them straight away.

I’m with you on that one, although it seems odd that I have to ‘air’ things that have been out in the fresh air all day. 😀

😃
yes it’s strange, don’t know if it’s just the thought of it or not, but I’m convinced items from the airing cupboard just feels different, actually softer

You are lucky. It has just been too damp here to do that. We have had so much rain, and even on dry days the air has been damp.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 23/02/2024 18:30

I'm clearly the odd one out. I hate line dried washing. It was always full of spider's and bird poo when I did it... I happily have it on the clothes horse inside all year round.

RampantIvy · 23/02/2024 18:31

I never get spiders in my washing, and only the occasional bird poo - and we have lots of trees nearby.

Also, sliding into a freshly made bed with bedding that has been on the line earlier in the day is heaven to me. I sleep so much better

Especially nice after a thorough at home pedicure. Bliss!

Me me me! I even take photos of them. I’m not sure why it gives me so much pleasure. Maybe because it’s so simple and you are harnessing the earth’s own energy and people have been doing it since the dawn of time. I used to love hanging reusable nappies in the sun too.

I've taken photos as well!

Hang them out and wear them again.

If you hang worn clothes out in the sun, the UV rays will kill the bacteria that makes our clothes smell. It is that bacteria that feeds on our shed skin cells (detritus) and sweat that creates the odours that we dislike. Better still if you hang clothes out when there is a bit of a breeze, it blows away the microscopic detritus and helps freshen clothes up.

I do this exactly between May and September and it works a treat. I can wear the same clothes 3-4 times without washing them and they smell fresh and look clean. Heavily soiled clothes or men's white shirt (especially the collar) will not work under this regime. Lightly soiled clothes will and they smell fine.

The detritus I speak of is animal, human and plant life cells that are shed in billions of tons around the world each day. The stuff that lands and feeds the crops we eat. The stuff we blow out of our nose daily.

FizzyStream · 23/02/2024 18:42

Nothing smells like line dried washing. I bloody hate hanging out washing but it's worth it for the smell.

LongLostSock · 23/02/2024 18:51

I love having the washing out. It's an all year round thing in this house, even playing hokey cokey with the rain at points. When we get the weather warnings for wind I triple peg and get all the sheets, blankets and towels done in a morning. Pure joy 🤣

LilacpointMummy · 23/02/2024 18:56

I have found my people!
I love hanging out washing and got 2 sets of bedding washed and dried today.

There's just something so wholesome about it that I love, and getting it dried for free 😊

It wouldn’t be my Instagram page if there wasn’t an annual photo of the first washing on the line of the year!😂

AddictedToBooks · 23/02/2024 19:22

I can't wait for a sunny day - I absolutely love doing the laundry and pegging it out - definitely agree with those that say things smell better and there really IS something about line-dried bedding as it just feels softer and fresher.
However I did have a negative line drying episode a few years ago when I'd used a new fabric conditioner and took a dark coloured cardigan off the line in the dusk and took a deep sniff - and half-inhaled a blimmin spider up my right nostril!!!

Don't know who was more shocked - me or poor Incy

MargaretThursday · 23/02/2024 19:25

Yes. And when the children were babies a line of nappies was also deeply satisfying.

almondflake · 23/02/2024 19:31

I can't wait to dry outside , no chance today in Bolton,it's been hailing and raining today 😞

InMySpareTime · 23/02/2024 19:36

I've harboured a few insects in laundry, usually ladybirds but once I found a butterfly hibernating in some washing I'd left in the basket for a week. I let it rest on a piece of paper until it was ready to fly out of the window.

Drying washing outside ( and seeing it out there gently flapping in the breeze) is one of life's true pleasures. I love it so much.

Swishswish26 · 23/02/2024 20:13

There is simply no other feeling like it! I never let DP hang it out, the pleasure is all mine 😂 I can’t wait for Spring!

Chicheguevara · 23/02/2024 20:14

I love it.
I told the youngsters at work, that I dry my clothes using solar and wind technology and they think I am cool. I failed to mention the line and pegs bit, they think I have some futuristic gizmo in the kitchen.

DrCoconut · 23/02/2024 20:18

Another reason I can't wait for sunny weather now after over a year of cold and rain.

MeinKraft · 23/02/2024 20:20

I particularly like the smell of washing that's been lightly rained on.
