Putting washing on the line in the sun

I apologise if this is a niche pleasure - but does anyone else get a huge pleasure from seeing big sheets on the washing line in the sun?

Maybe it's a childhood thing.

@NoWordForFluffy , I am on my 2nd load too.
Ah my lines are the perfect width apart for the sheets ( by fault rather than design)
Aww doggo wants to smell the clean washing too 😀

LaPetitePouleRousse · 15/03/2025 13:40

Yep! Doing the mattress protectors, the cat blankies, the sofa throw... It reminds me of grand houses having The Great Wash back in history... 🧺 Apparently it was a sign of affluence not to have to wash every week - you would take pride in having enough linen to manage for 6 - 8 weeks or more.

TheNuthatch · 15/03/2025 16:01

I love the idea of The Great Wash!

The weather is ok here, but very still and there are some dark clouds floating around. I've got three loads out and have decided that it's staying out there all night if necessary. If spiders want to wipe their willy on it, that's fine by me, but it's not coming in until it's dry.

NoWordForFluffy · 15/03/2025 16:04

We often either leave it out overnight, or put it out last thing, @TheNuthatch. We have no fears about spider willies here!

I feel like a rebel 🕷 🥒

I went a step further yesterday and this morning, I have some sheets and pillow cases that are a bit faded and tired looking so I am / have dyed them !
I now have dark red ,bright blue and ( soon ) bright yellow sets . !

WingBingo · 16/03/2025 11:13

Real emergency yesterday. Washing machine broke (luckily I’d just completed the bedding, always on a Saturday)

straight into AO and new one is installed and the first wash is on.

I was unashamedly upset yesterday as I hadn’t even got to the uniforms.

I’m fairly sure it’s MIL over filling it but she won’t listen (whole other thread)

Anyhow, panic over and all is well. It’s dry and there’s a breeze!

Oooh, that's next-level! 👏

@WingBingo nothing worse than a washing machine breakdown! I'd rather it was the car!!

Ooh now that's quick moving.
Every now and then I wonder when mine is going to pack in . It beeps randomly and occasionally tries to make a break for it by walking across the kitchen floor.

I bought it a new pump last year so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it keeps going for a few more years.

Hanging laundry out reminds me of my grandmother's house! You would fight to hang it up on a long line in a wind tunnel, everything dried at a horizontal angle and the towels were like solidified sandpaper afterwards, but it is definitely a sign of spring!

TheNuthatch · 17/03/2025 07:52

@WingBingo There is nothing worse than a broken washing machine. Kudos for getting a new one delivered and installed so quickly. I hope you like your new one.

@LaPetitePouleRousse I hope you had success with the dying.

I could get used to this weather. More laundry to do today. It's dry but chilly here.

WingBingo · 17/03/2025 22:28

It’s very good. Simple things in life, eh?

like line dried fresh bedding and empty washing baskets.

Curlygirl06 · 18/03/2025 12:23

Whatever the weather, mine goes outside on an airer. We have a wind out sunshade/ awning thing, so the washing goes under there whatever the weather, even when it's minus temperatures

InMySpareTime · 18/03/2025 12:27

I’m re-waterproofing my awning cover today, which counts as drying laundry and making sure I can dry more laundry outside all summer.

Lifebeganat50 · 17/04/2025 13:08

Hope we’re all enjoying the extra drying hours in the day now!!
My mum will be burning in her grave as for the first time in my life I’m leaving washing on the line overnight 😂not because I can’t be bothered bringing it in, but I leave for work at 6am so I’m putting it out at night to catch the next day😂

When I go back to work in June I am definitely doing this! I don't trust my WFH husband to do any washing 😂

TheNuthatch · 17/04/2025 13:19

I'm a recent convert to night drying and I love it! Thank you Fluffy for introducing me to it. It takes the pressure off in the working week. My Gran would also be mortified, sorry Gran.

I haven't dried anything indoors for weeks now. Long may it last 🙏.

NoWordForFluffy · 17/04/2025 13:20

We put ours out overnight all of the time! Sometimes it's the only dry / windy period amongst days of rain!

We do have two loads on the line right now though as it's beautiful (marked contrast to yesterday!).

In the warmer weather I often hand washing out in the dark. It suits my working hours better.
