Putting washing on the line in the sun

I apologise if this is a niche pleasure - but does anyone else get a huge pleasure from seeing big sheets on the washing line in the sun?

Maybe it's a childhood thing.

Just thawing out my fingers after hanging out the washing today.
We had a hard frost overnight, but no rain forecast for today (just for a change).

Totally agree. Sadly it's a bit damp and drizzly where I live this morning. 😔

NastyLittleNoseWrinkle · 24/02/2024 13:48

Insomnia? @Allshallbewell2021 😂

I thought it was good to be darked on bc the point was not to fade stuff in the sun, isn’t that why it’s called ‘darked on’?

I’d put stuff for all sorts of reasons though, not to fade, if items needed early morning, if it would be too hectic to hang it in the morning, if there was a backlog of washing to get through, all alongside insomnia & it’s quite pretty at night hanging out washing in the quiet moonlight

Even though my garden is quite heaving with spiders 😂 I was too entrenched in the habit by the time I read that thread to be put off.

I hung mine out whilst wearing my coat but will be worth it if some of it dries.

I much prefer to dry washing outside but have a load on the clothes horse in the kitchen at the moment. Now that the days are getting longer, I’ll start pegging it out as long as there’s a bit of sunshine and a breeze. I love seeing the washing out in the sunshine but not seeing it hanging limply on damp winter days and knowing that I’m still going to have to put it on the clothes horse to get it dry enough for the airing cupboard.

ShowOfHands · 24/02/2024 14:33

I sort of love it but as I don't have a dryer and hang everything out all year round, it's more of a chore than a joy a lot of the time.

FizzyWizzyBubbles · 24/02/2024 15:22

Yes. I use my line all year unless raining. Even the dull windy days it 90% dries and quick finish on radiator Or tumble.

flowerpotmike · 24/02/2024 15:49

I love it so much! I often hang the washing out and then glance back at it as I walk away. It makes me so happy.
I too hang it out at night in the mid summer. It's often dry by the time I get up.
Also guilty of repeated sniffing line dried sheets.

LongLostSock · 24/02/2024 19:56

Aye, but the joy is not having clothes on airers taking up room and damping the house. I hate drying clothes inside. You can run dehumidifiers, open windows, run the heating but if you live in an old property as we do you'll get mould, doesn't matter, it'll find a mf corner to produce.

The joy is no mould risk 😅

IloveAslan · 24/02/2024 19:56

I don't put mine out overnight in summer, but when I worked full time I used to in winter once a week. Saved getting up early on a cold morning! To my knowledge no washing was ever harmed by using this method.

SgtJuneAckland · 24/02/2024 19:58

I love it! Got two lots of bedding and a full load of towels dry on the line this week!

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 24/02/2024 20:03

I usually dry outside between April and October. I often leave it overnight during the summer and it dries properly the following morning. The smell of line-dried clothes is the smell of summer for me.

Same here. It was -2 at 8.30am. I got some stuff out on the line today, but unfortunately brought it back in freezing cold and damp. Still, Spring is almost here, hopefully.

PawsisShady · 24/02/2024 20:16

Not allowed in my garden but my neighbour (who reported me) has moved and everyone else is fine with it
Cannot wait to be able to put my airer outside!

Some of mine actually froze in the time it took to wash and hang out the next load 😂. 4 loads done and dried outside though makes me a VERY happy bunny

I'm fascinated by the putting it out at night in the summer sorcery! I've never done this, is this common among my people here?

If it’s warm and there’s a breeze, the clothes will dry. The sun is just an added extra during the day. I often hang a load out before bed during the summer, and it’s ready to bring in first thing.

I hang mine out all year unless it is raining, which this autumn and winter has meant that I have line dried my washing about 3 or 4 times in total.

We have had so much rain.

Bluebellsparklypant · 25/02/2024 09:55

I’m with you, I put my washing out on the line all the way through the year if it’s not raining as it just feels & smells so nice

Joeylove88 · 25/02/2024 10:20

I love it! I cant wait to stop using the tumble dryer and start hanging the washing out again in the sunshine. Its a good excuse to be in the garden but also its a nice break from the day to day craziness where you can let your brain relax for 10-15.

TheSandgroper · 25/02/2024 10:44

I love putting all my pillows out. Then you put your nose into them at night and it’s the best.

I do it in summer when it’s stinking hot but even in winter on a cooler day with a dry breeze. And quilts, too.

RampantIvy · 25/02/2024 11:01

What a brilliant idea @TheSandgroper

bobster31 · 25/02/2024 11:14

As a child I used to "wash" tea towels, dusters etc. in our garden pond so I could hang them on the line and sniff them afterwards 😆

74Violette · 26/02/2024 07:18

There is something therapeutic about hanging washing out in the sun and then sitting back and watch it blowing about. I love it! I don't start pegging out until April though, when it's a bit warmer.

Lifebeganat50 · 26/02/2024 07:25

There’s a hard frost here, but blue skies, so I’m waiting for a load to finish to go out…

Taylormiffed · 26/02/2024 07:59

You can put it out overnight in winter too. Dry, cold days with a breeze will still do the job as soon as the sun is up.
