Putting washing on the line in the sun

I apologise if this is a niche pleasure - but does anyone else get a huge pleasure from seeing big sheets on the washing line in the sun?

Maybe it's a childhood thing.

I love putting the clothes horse away in the summer and not having clothes indoors.

Ive got washing out today even if it is chilly

KirstenBlest · 23/02/2024 12:58

I agree with you, @Allshallbewell2021 . It's one of the pleasures in life.

TokyoSushi · 23/02/2024 12:59

No opportunity yet here, but I honestly love it! I've been known to stand back and admire my lovely neat washing line!

Too flippin wet to do that here.

Yeah to wet here too , I put washing out a few days ago and it's still out there so it's been darked on too😳

TooTiredToType77 · 23/02/2024 13:15

I've been hanging my sheets out on the line at any opportunity, even in January, and then finishing off on the radiators. Read something about being outside, even in the cold, the fabric will dry. Advice about COL I think it was but it really works.

full moon tonight/tomorrow, so if it ‘s pale washing it will be dry, bleached and mooned on

Allshallbewell2021 · 23/02/2024 13:37

River Lee it was like that yesterday, it was just a wall of rain all day which is why a sunny day is such a relief. Sorry you have not had the line laundry opportunity today!

Madderthanahatter. I sniff my sheets in what must sound a demented way.

This is interesting, thanks. I was just thinking about that. Lovely sunny day here but only 2° and I didn't think you could dry outside in the cold.

TheBlueAndAmber · 23/02/2024 13:42

Ooh yes! 🧺
I agree with PP about “getting excited” if it’s a good drying days!
There are about 4 or 5 of us ‘oldies’ at work who love outside drying, and as we start work at 6am, we’re all outside from 5am on summer mornings putting the washing out before we go to work!
The best time is a run of good drying days, when all your usual washing is done and you prowl the house finding winter coats to wash, cushion covers, spare bedding etc because you can get them dry!
One of life’s simple pleasures (and it’s free!) Just love clean line-dried bed linen♥️

I'm sure Kate Bush wrote a song about it.

Yes - Mrs Bartolozzi:

'I think, I see you standing outside
But it's just your shirt, hanging on the washing line
Waving its arm as the wind blows by
And it looks so alive
Nice and white
Just like it's climbed
Right out of my
Washing machine
Washing machine'

KirstenBlest · 23/02/2024 13:49

@Esgaroth , if the patio/pavement is dry, the washing will dry. If not completely, they'll dry a fair bit. They can finish drying indoors if necessary.

In the summer, I've been known to hang them in the evening. They don't seem to suffer from being darked on. Smile

theemmadilemma · 23/02/2024 13:50

I can't wait to start using my line again. We're not quite there yet in S. Yorks for my liking, but soon.

Oh the smell of Yorkshire hillside dired laundry. AMAZING!

kab89 · 23/02/2024 13:55

Oh yes. I have a south facing garden and I have been putting washing out all winter on dry, sunny days. Even in December and January it was three quarters dry and just needed to go on the airer overnight.

NastyLittleNoseWrinkle · 23/02/2024 13:57

my enjoyment starts the second I hoist the basket of damp clothes onto my hip 😂

I even mutter ‘good child washing-bearing hips’ laughing to/at myself

I have a lot of throws etc some for my Dcats and will even just hang them out dry for an air

the older I get the simpler my pleasures and that’s the way I like it

UmaniCaroline · 23/02/2024 14:03

Putting washing on the line is one of my favourite small pleasures.

TheBirdintheCave · 23/02/2024 14:03

I'm looking forwards to putting washing out on the line again come spring 😃

Muchtoomuchtodo · 23/02/2024 14:04

I’ve managed to dry the bedding outside once this year. The kids were 🙄 at my pleasure, the first time each year is always a cause of great joy!

No such luck today, we’re enjoying a variety of torrential rain, hail and sleet in our part of South Wales.

OSU · 23/02/2024 14:07

Love it too. And also get pleasure from a load of one particular colour

marshmallowfinder · 23/02/2024 14:15

I love it! I've dried quite a bit out there so fat this year. I live in a block of 12 flats and I am the ONLY person who uses the washing lines. It's unbelievable! I love thinking about the generations of women in my family who've gone before me, pegging out their washing, and here I am doing it now. 🥰

willowstar · 23/02/2024 14:35

@marshmallowfinder I really relate to what you have said. I remember helping my granny hang out the washing when I stayed with her every summer when I was little. I remember her satisfaction at getting the washing out and I feel connected with her in a small way when I hang mine.

I also think of my auntie who was very dedicated to it. She lived in the north east of Scotland. She would watch the sky like a hawk and whip the washing in when the rain came on and rehang it when it was off...several times sometimes.

I am not quite so committed. I have a one re-hang rule, after that I just give up and dry it inside.

Itsabouttimeformetogetonthefloor · 23/02/2024 14:44

Oh yes. We moved in the late autumn and I still haven’t got my washing line up yet, it’s been so wet - I can’t wait for that glorious first outdoor hang of the season 🥰

DatingDinosaur · 23/02/2024 12:40

It's not just you. Mine are happily flapping away on the line today Smile

I'm jealous.

It's raining here 😓

NancyPickford · 23/02/2024 14:49

Re the poster who said about lifting the washing basked onto her hip, I always think as I do that, of the women who must have done the exact same thing here, as my wee cottage was built in 1875 and the drying green on the back garden is on a bit of a steep hill. When I get to the top end of the washing line and peg out the last item I turn round and shade my eyes to look over the loch to the forest beyond and think of the women before me. If it's a particularly blowy day I remember my mum saying it was 'a fine day for drying blankets'.
