Putting washing on the line in the sun

I apologise if this is a niche pleasure - but does anyone else get a huge pleasure from seeing big sheets on the washing line in the sun?

Maybe it's a childhood thing.

Beyond jealous now, we’re on to our 2nd hail storm of the afternoon… gone cold and dark skies. here☹️

Yirk · 23/02/2024 15:31

Bedding flapping and drying in the winter sun and wind...so satisfying, its the little things that make me smile.

RampantIvy · 23/02/2024 15:35

It's one of life's small pleasures isn't it?
Line dried washing is so much nicer that washing dried indoors, and it's free and better for the environment. Although I don't like sandpaper towels so they still go in the tumble drier.

48wheaties · 23/02/2024 15:39

I love hanging washing out too, but there's always some geezer who thinks sunny dry days are for burning rubbish ....aaargh!!

PerkingFaintly · 23/02/2024 15:39

My people, all! 😍

MadCatLady27 · 23/02/2024 16:01

Winter and autumn are my favourite seasons, but I do love drying washing on the line 😁

It smells so fresh and lovely when you bring it in

I hate drying towels and bedding inside as they are so big it's awkward to find somewhere to put them

Although @48wheaties is right about my pleasure being ruined if someone burns stuff and makes my washing smell of that. In the days of neighborhood sites and what's apps etc, just pop a heads up in the chat so I can go and rescue my washing

And don't get my started on going out to get in my lovely dry washing only to find there's bits which have been shat on by a fucking bird 😡

TeaMistress · 23/02/2024 16:04

Yes when weather permits I hang my washing on the line. Sunshine is the best soap. Makes everything smell fresh and clean.

Allshallbewell2021 · 23/02/2024 16:05

I have loved reading all these posts.

Oh me too! My absolute favourite is a long line with sheets on it. We've got a rotary here and it's not the same.

I dry outside as much as possible.

CatamaranViper · 23/02/2024 16:09

While I do love it, it only ever seems to rain on the days I'm working from home or at weekends. The only good drying days are days I'm in the office so I can't

Allshallbewell2021 · 23/02/2024 16:19

A colleague said once she didn't have a washing line as it looked 'ugly' so she dries every thing indoors. I think she meant something other than ugly; I think I sensed a snobbery about it. But I was brought up by a passionate line dryer so I can't be any other way now.

It has to be a long line, not a rotary one.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 23/02/2024 16:26

I only have a rotary line but I still love hanging out a wash. I was only thinking yesterday that it's nearly time to bring it out of the shed. The weather isn't great today here either. Too many heavy showers.

daffodilandtulip · 23/02/2024 16:28

Yesssss!! Washed, dried and away on the same day and smelling so fresh. And I always smile to myself as I walk past the doors and see it flapping away throughout the morning.

FictionalCharacter · 23/02/2024 16:47

Sweetpotatofalafels · 23/02/2024 12:44

Also, sliding into a freshly made bed with bedding that has been on the line earlier in the day is heaven to me. I sleep so much better

Same! I actually lie there smiling 😊
There was a thread a while back where loads of people were saying they don’t like that “outdoors” smell. I found that really surprising.

fridaynightdinner12346 · 23/02/2024 16:48

It's one of the best things ever, even better when you get the first load out early morning 🥰 can't wait for it

Copperoliverbear · 23/02/2024 17:06

I love it.

Phoebefail · 23/02/2024 17:25

To think that in many housing developments in the USA it is an offence to have a clothes line. It lowers the tone and therefore the value of the neighbourhood.

RampantIvy · 23/02/2024 17:26

So far we have had one day this year where I could put washing on the line, and it was still damp when I brought it in, but it smelled heavenly.

I don't understand people who don't like the fresh air smell on their washing either @FictionalCharacter. Maybe they live somewhere where there is a lot of air pollution. The worst smell we get is when the farmers are spreading muck on the fields.

How odd! Just out of interest, how does it lower the tone if the washing lines are in private back gardens, so can't be seen from the street?

Taylormiffed · 23/02/2024 17:29

Yanbu. My laundry is out all year round. The sunny winter days are the most satisfying.

Hapagirl48 · 23/02/2024 17:32

Me me me! I even take photos of them. I’m not sure why it gives me so much pleasure. Maybe because it’s so simple and you are harnessing the earth’s own energy and people have been doing it since the dawn of time. I used to love hanging reusable nappies in the sun too.

Yes, you’re right. And it’s not a new thing. My grandma who is American used to think it looked trashy and poor. She was born in 1925. Maybe it showed you couldn’t afford a dryer or something.

Esgaroth · 23/02/2024 13:41

This is interesting, thanks. I was just thinking about that. Lovely sunny day here but only 2° and I didn't think you could dry outside in the cold.

If the path’s drying or dry the washing will dry!

I have found my tribe!

Tumbleweed101 · 23/02/2024 17:41

I love it and in summer I love hanging it out early before work knowing it will be dry and ready to bring in when I get home.

Haven't had an opportunity recently as it hasn't stopped raining here on my days off!
