I really wish people would stop diagnosing others with personality disorders whenever that person displays behaviours they dislike/don't understand/find objectionable etc

I take particular issue with the diagnosis (armchair or otherwise) of BPD. I am going to more or less repeat what I did on another thread. More and more evidence is supporting the fact that BPD stems from childhood trauma and in the context of that trauma the behaviours listed as 'evidence' of personality disorder make total sense. In her seminal work Trauma and Recovery, psychiatrist Judith Herman writes about the inherent misogyny in psychiatric diagnoses and that they rarely acknowledge the trauma behind them, particularly the trauma of women. It was she who first proposed the term CPTSD the symptoms of which (surprise surprise) overlap considerably with BPD as well as other disorders.

It is also worth repeating that when you look into the history of psychiatric diagnoses they can be shocking in their lack of scientific rigour and were originally meant as way of ordering symptoms and behaviours that psychiatrists aka men did not understand. Now people think these are things are concrete, immutable, conditions rather than the culture-bound rough framework they are.

Which makes people diagnosing other people they've never met and have only a snapshot of even more absurd (and that would count if you were a psychiatrist doing so from your armchair too).

I’m not really sure how much she really understands any more to be fair. The words are very child like. I think it’s quite distasteful her insta is now basically showing how unwell she is to the public. I get they covered it up before to protect her, and also it possibly makes her happy , but it’s clear the whole free Britney thing was an enormous mistake and she’s sadly a very unwell woman who doesn’t have much capacity.

She’s posted a note on Instagram tonight detailing her trip (along with nude pictures) and it’s just really strange rambling, like a child has written it and jumping from one topic to another.

Yes she’s under full time care, she effectively lives with her care team, just the change in her conservatoire means she doesn’t have a family member protecting her any more,so now it’s becoming visible to the public as she has the ability to say she wishes to do this.

Protecting or incarcerating? Even severely mentally ill people have the right not to be imprisoned in their own home. Her family thought she was well enough to tour.
