the restaurant scene and the date are just unconvincing as she looks fairly repelled and embarrassed by this childlike man and then is kissing him and going back to his for whatever.

I think Ambika was out of her depth in general and that scene was evident of this. Also the scene where they're in the lake and after several years, he finally tells her he fancies her. In response, she looks at him blankly. It's a total mismatch of acting levels.

Yes this too. That was very apparent - he is a genuine talent though, superb actor.

I thought it was slow, as did DH and a bit like a gen Z/late millennial had gone back in time. DH and I were children in early 90s but my brother was a year younger than they are supposed to be and I just can't imagine anyone going in holiday as a couple of friends at 21 plus at that time. It was unrealistic in that sense.

Umm - why on earth not? I did this quite a bit at that time!

Moonpig82 · 24/02/2024 20:46

I found a lot of it unrealistic and sadly Ambika didn’t act well. I was really gunning for her to do a great job but she just didn’t.

Try Jack and Alice on Channel 4 catch up. Absolutely loved it!

Oh god no Alice and Jack is awful

two people playing games - just nonsense

To be fair I'm just referencing my anecdotal experiences with my older brother and can't remember him or his friends having a friendship with a girl/women at uni where he/they didn't fancy them.

In all honesty, the high brow drama of The OC is my go to at the moment and more my era!

Its tedious. Its miscast. Ambika its horrible. She is not emma. she just annoying without the “emma charm”. I’m big fan of one day. Read the book couple of times. And i’m sooooooo disappointed

Yellowdaysaregood · 25/02/2024 01:30

NRTFT but I'm a book purist and no it wasn't for me, there was no chemistry whatsoever between the two imo.and the music wasn't right, the music was from the early eighties in the first couple of episodes, not from 1988. It might work if you've never read the book. Also much has been said about her leeds accent being great mmmmmm... Sorry it wasn't

Ambika is definitely miscast, I'm trying to think who I would cast? Who knows?it would probably have to be an unknown given the ages , but not her.

Yes I thought the music was wrong too. I was at uni at the time.

It was the most captivating, intense, emotional series I’ve ever watched. Ambika was jaw droppingly incredible and gorgeous and simply fantastic and I loved her.

hands down the best thing I’ve ever watched.

Musomama1 · 25/02/2024 18:02

I found the way they played both the lead characters just not chemistry inducing.

Dex is far too 'together' in this, and Em lacks maturity. In the novel and film, Dex is daft and vulnerable whilst Em is the grounded one, even when things aren't panning out for her. You can see the yin and Yang thing going on.

Have you watched normal people, BBC?

Yes but tbh I didn’t really enjoy it in comparison

JackieO22 · 29/02/2024 08:33

Wasn't sure I'd like it, watched episode 1 still wasn't sure then... completely loved it! Bawled my eyes out last two episodes, now need something to cheer me up!

DillDanding · 29/02/2024 10:02

On the whole, I quite enjoyed it. Did it need to be 14 episodes? No.

Not entirely convinced by the casting of Ambika Mod as Emma. She gives off a ‘can’t really be bothered with this’ vibe and there was no chemistry between them.

irishapple · 05/03/2024 00:02

I thought it was slow but strangely captivating. I didn't know the story line so obviously cried like a baby for the last two episodes. Utterly heart wrenching. My head hurts now!

Stopandlook · 05/03/2024 11:16

I enjoyed it. Read the book years ago (thought it was just ok) and somehow forgot the ending, so I was devastated watching the last two episodes!

WellWhaddayaKnow · 05/03/2024 15:50

I loved it.

Never read the book so I’ve watched the series on its own terms with no preconceptions.

Thought the soundtrack was stunning and really well chosen. The 90s and 2000s stuff worked for me. And I guess they still played stuff from the early 80s in the late 80s…?! (In response to a couple of criticisms upthread about the music not being the right year. Although get that if it was your graduation year you want to bask in the nostalgia!)

Thought the two leads were great and loved their chemistry and the way the relationship unfolded. Ambika is going to be huge. Both were excellent imo.

itsmyp4rty · 17/02/2024 20:33

I absolutely loved it - but it was my era, great music and I knew a few Dexter types in my time at uni. I loved that it was the nerdy and not so classically gorgeous girl getting the gorgeous boy rather than the same old sad nerdy bloke getting the gorgeous girl that is trotted out time and time again. Plus Leo would have been exactly my type back in the day.

Although the way the characters are presented you still end up feeling like it’s him who’s really lucked out out of the two

Yes, I think this is how it is meant to be - David Nicholls has said that Emma is the character he is most fond of in all of his books. I didn’t find the actor who plays Dexter attractive in the slightest, however. I thought that was a bit of a flaw as he is supposed to be completely gorgeous.

Late to this thread but we have just finished the series and loved it. I knew the ending but DH had no idea and it absolutely blindsided him.

It was a slow burner for me.Ive seen 12 episodes and I'm hooked now. I'm just waiting for a spare hour to myself to watch the last 2 as they are emotional. I read the book years ago but it just washed over me. Nothing special, but I can't stop thinking about the TV. I'm already planning on watching it all again!

I did this and not sure if I left it too long but the last two eps just seemed way off 🙁

123Valentina123 · 05/03/2024 20:25

I liked it but kind Ambika utterly irritating to watch - she has the most sullen face. I think it’s great they cast an Asian, but she really didn’t fit the bill.

AnotherEmma · 05/03/2024 21:11

Simone Ashley would've been good, I think. She's so beautiful. And she did grumpy very well in Bridgerton - but was also very engaging when she softened.
