I loved it!

I thought Leo Woodhall was extremely well cast and I warmed to Ambika Mod over the course of the series. I disagree with the pp who said that Dexter would never have been interested in Emma, I think he would have been very interested in an “object of curiosity” way, a different sort of girl to have sex with, which is how the story starts. I think he then finds her interesting and refreshing as a person as well as enjoying the knowledge of her background attraction to him. Ironically he becomes a much better person for Emma due to his relationship with Sylvie.

Ambika Mod is miscast as Emma. They’re such an unbelievable couple

Completely agree...no chemistry and it's not believable. Shame as I think the casting ruined it.

StarsGuitars · 19/02/2024 03:37

I thought it was great. I thought the casting was perfect, strange that so many have a problem with Ambika Mod as Emma. She played the character perfectly. I loved the book, I wasn’t so keen on the film.

Completely agree regarding Ambika.

Are graduates notably more cheerful than others then?

Yes, I think so, a youthful optimism especially being a graduate in the 90s, no student debt hanging over you. Emma was an unconvincing 21 year old as her cynicism appeared to be more of someone who has lived a bit, more akin to the actresses age late 20s. I also thought it isn't 1880 what's all the fuss about two people from different backgrounds getting together! Dexter being unreliable, who thinks like that at 21, especially someone who has good prospects following graduation, in the 90s that equality of opportunity was much more realistic than now! It is only my opinion so no offence intended.

Loubilou23 · 19/02/2024 12:52

Emma was miscast in the series, hard to beat Anne Hathaway in the original movie.

This was the only thing that ruined it for me sadly.

stilldumdedumming · 19/02/2024 12:57

Not so much the lack of cheeriness but the being unremittingly miserable about him in particular. I do get that Emma is the only one who is honest to Dex while others are sucking up to him, or are insignificant to him. It just seems a bit too much. Like why are they friends? The later scenes when they are actually together you can see the chemistry more.

I did cry at the Paris episode.

I do think the different backgrounds always were and still are, quite stark though. And a relationship across these is quite difficult. The world is different when you have money and a family safety net.

stilldumdedumming · 19/02/2024 13:03

I think I will re watch the film. Here's the trailer and I do think there may be something in the criticism here.

The relationship thing was one thing that had me shouting at the TV as IME of Edinburgh uni,
Barnaby and Camilla stuck with other Barnabies and Camillas all the way through but then it would explain why everything was happening at the end of their time there.

AinsleyHayes · 20/02/2024 22:35

I’ve come to the conclusion that the people who have an issue with the casting of Ambika Mod can’t have read the book. She is absolutely spot on for book Emma, who is a chippy PITA throughout her twenties. Anne Hathaway is great in lots of things but she was all wrong in the film.

Stumpedasatree · 21/02/2024 14:27

I absolutely loved it, loved both Leo and Ambika in their characters and thought there was loads of chemistry between them, and they acted their parts brilliantly. Very refreshing seeing a change from the usual leading woman, especially up against the perfection of Leo.

Sounds like Leeds – we had no interest in mixing with Ras and vice versa

100% agree. Anne Hathaway was a ridiculous Emma. Even with stupid 90s glasses, bad hair and bizarre accent she was still absolutely luminous, and they toned down her insufferable moralising. I am finding the series much closer in tone to the novel, which is ironic given that the film's screenplay was adapted by David Nicholls himself and he is only an exec on the Netflix version.

Scorchio84 · 21/02/2024 16:43

I've read the book probably about 3 times over the years but I really didn't like this adaptation, the casting just jarred tbh, like pretty much anyone can play the one dimensional, posh, pretty boy "Dexter" but Emma should have had a better actress portraying her, I wasn't a fan of Anne Hathaways version either

The muisc & wardrobe were my highlights

TheWildEyeBoyfromafreecloud · 21/02/2024 17:30

I could not see in anyway how this couple bonded on that first night? She was being a clichéd northerner with a chip on her shoulder, they didn't have any shared interest at all? She was miserable rude and depressing.
. It feel this had so much potential had the girl been more likeable.

SoftPillowAllNight · 21/02/2024 18:09

I couldn't decide where it was going and gave up after 3 episodes

Lighteningstrikes · 21/02/2024 18:24

EXCELLENT ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The best I have seen on Netflix.

AinsleyHayes · 21/02/2024 18:28

Fascinating that Emma's unlikeability is such a sticking point. Dexter is horrendously unlikeable but I wonder if it is more palatable in the form of a handsome posh boy.

That's what I thought - cliched Northerner but he was the archetypal 'Posh boy'.

benfoldsfivefan · 21/02/2024 18:49

Dexter was personable and had charm and some compassion. The Emma in this adaptation had as much charisma as a piece of broccoli.

GoosieLucie · 21/02/2024 18:53

I didn't enjoy the book much, although I did get to the end. I can't remember a thing about it now so might watch the dramatisation and see if it comes back to me as to why I didn't like it.

TeachesOfPeaches · 21/02/2024 18:55

Can't believe the praise it is getting. Thought it was quite average and the male lead unbearable. Loved This is going to to Hurt with Ambika

TheWildEyeBoyfromafreecloud · 21/02/2024 19:06

Dex had far more depth though and was compassionate and obviously saw something in her, he had layers and was interesting.

She just had the "chip"
