I'll start with 'Longer' by Dan Fogelberg.

@TheTecknician @LunaNorth I know this is an old thread but finally catching up on checking out some of the songs. The Tom Waite one is just beautiful. My Mum and Dad went to see Jack Jones at the Batley Variety Club too! They have both passed now and I hope they are somewhere dancing to some of these songs that they loved

So glad this thread has resurrected. Coming home in the car today we had the Best of Matt Monroe on. Some of my favourites are Portrait of My Love and Softly as I leave you. Such a lovely voice.

Stretching the definition of ballad. If I laugh - Cat Stevens

Man of the World - Peter Green. Once described as the most heartbreakingly beautiful song you will ever hear.

@Blackcountryexile We saw Peter Green at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon some years ago. He sang Man of the World - it was spellbinding. DH cried.

Also brilliant at the Fairfield was Georgie Fame (playing with Bill Whyman’s Rythm Kings) doing a solo version of Georgia on My Mind. Again spellbinding.

Smoke Gets In Your Eyes by the Platters. 1950s...though it is even earlier I think. Beautiful.

I love Smoke Gets In Your Eyes too. Beautiful sad song. That line : "Now, laughing friends deride, Tears I cannot hide..." I always think how cruel! Not real friends!
