You are my sunshine - Jimmie Davies

The actual verses are quite sad but the chorus is lovely.
Plus there's a jazzy clarinet solo!

You're the best thing by Paul Weller

Seconding what everyone has said about The Last Waltz. I never imagined I would love Englebert Humperdinck and then one day, poignantly Steve Wright played The Last Waltz and it became one of my guilty little pleasures.
After my Grandma died I heard Matt Monroe, once again on Steve Wright, singing a Portrait of My Love. Even though I never really heard my Gran play this I knew she used to love him and if it comes on I feel like she is nearby.

I shall submit The Most Beautiful Girl by Charlie Rich (not the similarly titled Prince song).

For The Good Times - Perry Como

A beautiful sad song about saying goodbye.

MrsToddsShortcut · 16/02/2024 14:20

I only have eyes for you - The Flamingoes.

Just the most beautiful song.

Also Move Close by Phyllis Nelson - nothing reminds me of teenage slow dances and fumbled kisses more than this!

AmaryllisChorus · 16/02/2024 14:25

Not exactly a ballad but God Only Knows by the Beach Boys

Newestname002 · 16/02/2024 14:57

Walk on By (Dionne Warwick)

Cocolapew · 16/02/2024 15:01

Another vote for The Flamingos.
These Arms Of Mine Otis Redding
Woman In Love Barbara Streisand.
Do It Neil Diamond.

Touched to see that some posters have mentioned Stardust on their funeral list. They played it at the end of my grandad's funeral and I still get a lump in my throat when I hear it so many years later.

Another of my favourites is Let it be Me by the Everley Brothers which we had as our first dance.

I know it's not strictly speaking a love ballad, but one I love is I Can't Make you Love Me - the version by George Michael. I turned on one of the music channels last night and it was on. It was spellbinding.

Highlighta · 16/02/2024 15:06

Book of Love - Peter Gabriel

Not a love song as such, I think more of missed opportunities ..

All my Life - Phil Collins

(Esp the extended version with a sax intro)

Holshicup · 16/02/2024 15:15

I guess that's why they call it the blues Elton John

Pallisers · 16/02/2024 15:20

Some lovely songs here.

What We Did For Love from Chorus Line is lovely. Josh Grogan does a nice version. DD2 sang it as the final song of her High School leaving concert - dedicated to her classmates. it was really touching.

dontcallmelen · 16/02/2024 15:25
