Stretching the definition of ballad. If I laugh - Cat Stevens

Man of the World - Peter Green. Once described as the most heartbreakingly beautiful song you will ever hear.

@dontcallmelen Shirley Jones was his stepmother, his dad was Jack Cassidy.

Gerry Rafferty , Right Down the Line, beautiful love song. (maybe not a ballad though ??)

Love this song

daisychain01 · 17/02/2024 19:42

England Dan and John Ford Coley

"I'd really Love to see you tonight"

I'm not talking 'bout moving in
And I don't want to change your life
But there's a warm wind blowing the stars around
And I'd really love to see you tonight

Another very Jimmy Young type of song! Probably more Yacht Rock, like Bertie Higgins mentioned upthread, but still a 70s classic.

BTW, the term Yacht Rock is quite new to my vocabulary. I take it to mean acts like Christopher Cross, America, Boz Scaggs, The Doobie Brothers, Seals and Crofts et al.

David Cassidy’s father was Jack Cassidy, a Broadway actor and singer. Jack’s second wife was Shirley Jones who played David’s mother in The Partridge Family.

More than Words by Extreme. First concert I ever went to.

this is a song describing blatant sexual coercion, not a Love Ballad at all

@Blackcountryexile I saw Peter Green sing that live at the Fairfield Halls in Croydon. Can't remember when it was but it must have shortly before he died. It was truly beautiful - DH had tears.

'Fool if you think it's over' Christmas Rea

Sorry, I know it's a typo, but I love 'Christmas Rea'! I reckon Chris Rea might just love it as well!😄

'Fool if you think it's over' is one of my favourites, too - and he sang 'Driving Home for Christmas', so you must have been thinking of that one too.

Dusty Springfield - 'The Look of Love'

Scott Walker - 'Make it easy on yourself'

Bread - 'Make it with you'

Bee Gees - 'How deep is your love'

😂

Does a lullaby count as a love ballad.

If so - Goodnight My Angel by Billy Joel , written for his baby daughter. The Kings Singers version is awesome. Mums and Dads might need a box of tissues.

Billy Joel's 'Just the Way You Are' brings back 1970's memories....

'The Perfect Year' by Dina Carroll brings back New Year 1994..

Abhannmor · 17/02/2024 23:30

Oh Dusty....anything by her ♥.

Goin Back is another beauty

Oh yes, Desperado. I love the way she sings it. Also love the way the Eagles sing it. Just a great song.

BeaLola · 17/02/2024 23:56

So many of these songs bringing back memories - strangely Engelbert's Last Waltz - my Dad used to sing this to my Mum - just heard it the other day and now I'm old(er) I was surprised by how much I like it . Then watching an old not seen by us before episode of the Royle Family yesterday Jim was twirling Barbara round to it.

So many on this thread - another I like Perhaps Love by John Denver

LadyEloise1 · 18/02/2024 00:27

Without You by Harry Nielsen

BucketofTeaMassiveCake · 18/02/2024 09:10

My Funny Valentine, Someone to Watch Over Me, and The Man I Love - the excellent Ella Fitzgerald.

Lilac Wine, Fool If You Think it's over, and Don't Cry Out Loud - Elkie Brooks

This Guy's In Love With You - Herb Alpert

Love Story (Where Do I Begin) - Andy Williams

Lady (Bert Kaempfert), Don't Stay - Johnny Mathis

Lady (Lionel Ritchie) - Kenny Rogers
The Look of Love - Dusty Springfield

I'm Coming Home - Tom Jones
