Nudists/Naturists

I have a friend who introduced me to life modelling last year and the same friend invited me to join her at a nudist/naturist evening at a swimming pool a few weeks ago. I went with her and found myself enjoying it, so I went with her last weekend too. There was quite a good balance between female/male attendees, which helped make it feel comfortable. So I am wondering if there is a fair number of nudists/naturists on Mumsnet too?

@LlynTegid Thank you. I assume so too. There are always people trying it out for the first time or because they're curious.

We'd been going to Fuerteventura for several years and saw lots of folk naked on the beaches. Curiosity got the better of me a few years ago. Tried it in my 50th birthday week, went swimming naked - loved it - and we used that same beach every day after. The following year we booked a hotel with a naturist area for me, and on day one on the beach my wife joined me and removed her bikini bottoms. She's always gone topless anyway.
We had a fabulous week together, and have used naturist beaches/ accommodation ever since for holidays and occasional club visits and swim events here.
For us, it's the ultimate in relaxation, no one is judging or staring at anyone else. It's all very respectful, with the added bonus that carry on baggage only cuts down the time wasted waiting around carousels in the airport.
We also enjoy wild swimming and there is nothing like being alone, early morning in the spring/ summer when it's just me, the water, the sunrise and ducks for skinny dipping.
'Each to their own' I guess.

I’ve mainly experienced it as festivals in the sauna areas where everyone is then naked.
found it really awkward at first then loved it!
far more liberating and freeing.
you see people in a different way and connect on a deeper level, it’s like you somehow stop seeing the body and see the soul and person inside

I’ve genuinely never found that someone wearing jeans and a shirt prevented me connecting with them, or failing to see their ‘souls’.

I do also wonder about whether the people who gush about how liberating swimming naked is — do you usually swim wearing those Victorian swimsuits made out of wool, and ankle length, accessorised with hats? Because swimming in a bikini or ordinary swimsuit doesn’t really feel much different to naked…

Oh, it is. Much freer, especially breasts. Also colder in the UK...

I highly doubt it. But there will be a few dirty old men (Brian from Hull) popping along shortly for some more details.

🤣

LakeTiticaca · 11/03/2024 21:31

I watched a documentary a few years ago about nudists. Well I watched the first 10 minutes. It seemed to be mostly populated by elderly men with saggy moobs and saggy arses, and elderly women, same
Each to their own but I wouldn't want to see those sights in the flesh (pun intended) 🤣🤣🤣

SpikyCushion · 11/03/2024 23:24

I used to know a naturist many years ago. He was the father of my ex. Sometimes we'd go round and he'd be mowing the lawn in the buff. He'd occasionally get out old family movies of the whole family on holiday in the early 70s in naturist camps playing volleyball. At the time I felt a bit uncomfortable but tried to regard it as all very liberal and cool.

Years later after his wife died it became apparent he was a crossdresser, had long been wearing her clothes in secret and there was a sexual motivation.

I have since read it is not uncommon for the two to be connected.

I'm sure there are naturists who just enjoy the feel of the breeze on their bits. But I also know there are others for whom it is linked to a fetish. And because they don't wear signs on their heads there's no way of telling them apart.

No thanks.

telestrations · 12/03/2024 01:29

I always seek out clothing optional beaches and saunas as sitting around in soggy swimwear is incredibly unhygienic and I adore swimming in the sea or ocean naked

Also find they tend to be the least spoilt or overlooked and with the least obnoxious people on them

NDerbys32 · 12/03/2024 06:42

@telestrations 100%. The beaches and accommodations are quieter, with more respectful people and in the ten years we've been involved, never seen anyone angry after getting drunk, falling over or spoiling anyone else's time. In Europe, it's common that whole families holiday this way too. No judgements, it's just how they're brought up.

LlynTegid · 12/03/2024 06:51

The comments about how small some swimwear is (well women's swimwear anyway) are very true.

varyblue · 12/03/2024 07:19

its one thing to enjoy being naked, it’s the desire to do so with strangers in a public place that’s odd and quite prevalent in this community . The op doesn’t even walk around her own home alone naked, and she’s obviously lived many summers, but enjoys the public element of it

My friends are nudists and they say they often go naked at home (adult children left home) as well as going to a nudist club locally and beaches abroad.

JL690 · 12/03/2024 08:46

@varyblue I don't go naked at home, it's still too cold here at the moment. And certainly not with the cost of heating too 😬

But what about during the summer? Unless this is your first season embracing the nudist life?

When the warmer weather comes, if it does 🤔, I will get my first chance to consciously try being naked at home. I've only been naked between bedroom and bathroom so far.

The forecast was predicting temperatures of mid teens later this week. Though you might want scuba gear with it....

I have German family. Germans are mad keen on being nude. Not just naturist beaches but in saunas and spas it’s normal to be naked. It’s not just normal but a kind of part of their identity which they love to bang on about especially in contrast to what they perceive as our uptight, repressed conservative British ways. Whenever I am in a naked environment in Germany people take great pleasure in asking me how I feel, the implication being that being backwards and repressed must be very hard for me.

Obviously it’s lovely to be naked sometimes and I really don’t think of myself as uptight at all (in fact in comparison to most germans who have a million and one rules about the way to live your life, Germans love to police the wearing of the right clothes in the right situations eg wearing of hijab or buttoning up your coat in winter ) but you can’t remove thousands of years of culture. The fact is our whole culture does place huge importance on the way a woman’s body looks. It just does. No amount of wishful thinking gets rid of that.

I wish modesty didn’t have such negative and old fashioned connotations. I am not shy, uptight of repressed but I am modest.

Jeepers, have I got a story for thee.

Lovely day out at The Donkey Sanctuary, South Devon. Sun was shining so afterwards I took a walk down the valley to the beach below. Pebbly, but stunning soft cliffs at each end and plenty of flora. It was deserted and rolled my blanket out and spent the whole afternoon there. Apart from two ramblers I saw nobody else. Complete tranquillity.

Roll on a year later and I take two families from a religious group for a day at the Donkey Sanctuary. Afterwards I walk them down to the beach armed with a picnic and plenty of chairs and blankets. Only to find......lots of (as @TedMullins said)..... "There were old people, thin, fat, tall, young women with full body hair, wonky boobs, small willies, all sorts."

Problem was that beforehand I had 'bigged up' this beach to get them interested enough to visit, saying things like "this is one of my favourite beaches" and "the views are stunning - trust me."

That is so funny.🤣🤣🤣

I am completely happy with being naked and swimming naked but really don’t want to chat naked to naked strangers-I do think that is weird /as for the barbecue aaaargh -gross!!!
went with a friend to a beach in Hastings and didn’t realise it was a nudist beach -basically lots of men posing and parading around for no reason and a few couples - seemed quite seedy -exhibitionists and couples there probably to give them something to talk dirty about later.

Edited

There is a problem with naturist or nudist beaches in the UK, I believe. There is a popular one on the south coast which has a distinctly unsavoury reputation, for both voyeurs and exhibitionists. Mostly men. (And this one is not in Hastings as per the above post.)
And in France where nudity can be fairly common on quite a few beaches it always makes me laugh to see families with middle aged Dad completely naked, (apart from a man-bag, that is) and Mum is topless but the teenage DC are in conservative swimwear. Don't blame them.
(Man-bag -- Not a euphemism. French men seem to be quite attached to the concept. Viva la France.😚)

JL690 · 22/04/2024 09:30

The weather has got warmer here so hoping to go to a beach soon. today, though, I'm trying being nude at home.

In two weeks we'll be in Crete at a naturist hotel and complex. And, there are always enough sunbeds to go round everybody. No early morning dashing about.
That pool looks lovely. Where is it please@VWT5 ?
