Nudists/Naturists

I have a friend who introduced me to life modelling last year and the same friend invited me to join her at a nudist/naturist evening at a swimming pool a few weeks ago. I went with her and found myself enjoying it, so I went with her last weekend too. There was quite a good balance between female/male attendees, which helped make it feel comfortable. So I am wondering if there is a fair number of nudists/naturists on Mumsnet too?

But wouldn't you be way too hot in a sauna with a robe or towel on? A swimming costume is much lighter and thinner

Not really. Tight mostly polyester textile will do no good for your sweat glands. A loose(!), fully breathing pure cotton robe or a towel is thicker but much better for the skin including the sense of heat. Obviously a cold wet swimming costume keeps you cooler but that defies the entire purpose of the sauna.

I find it disturbing that some adult nudists make their children attend. Must be terrifying for them. Also throws up a lot of questions about safeguarding and bodily autonomy.

The biggest issues I have had is when discovered by social nudists who think that just because I am naked I want the company of other naked people.

that’s it, you hit the nail on the head. It’s the wanting to be naked in public with strangers, even the op, she wants to find other folks on line , to talk about it.

its one thing to enjoy being naked, it’s the desire to do so with strangers in a public place that’s odd and quite prevalent in this community . The op doesn’t even walk around her own home alone naked, and she’s obviously lived many summers, but enjoys the public element of it.

Are you implying I am an exhibitionist? Nothing could be further from the truth. My friend introduced me to the event she goes to only recently and I enjoyed it, so it sparked my interest and I wondered if there were other Mumsnetters who also enjoyed social nudism. I hadn't thought about it before then, simple as that. It's a bit too cold to be naked at home in this weather unless I run up a huge heating bill, which I'm not prepared to do.

I highly doubt it. But there will be a few dirty old men (Brian from Hull) popping along shortly for some more details.

👋 Hello.

Would it be terrifying, though? If they're used to seeing their parents in the buff, it probably isn't that big a deal. I don't know; I've not been a child in that situation. I would assume boredom would be more likely than terror.

Absolutely nothing is terrifying for a child. FYI: children are not BORN with all kinds of religious or Victorian preconceptions, these are planted in by grown-ups.

I'd have been terrified and grossed out

I know I found naked adults frightening as a child. Also late dh was taken to a nudist beach by his mother (as a small child) and he just screamed his head off until they left. He said he found it incredibly disturbing

European clothing optional beaches are full of families. Few years ago in Fuerteventura our beach-neighbors were grandparents with grandkinds, no one bothered to wear any piece of textile. Fully relaxed, natural, enjoying the Sun, sand and water. The other year, Gran Canaria: younger teens, one girl 3 boys having a chat on a town beach, girl topless, all acting fully normal.

Why? Never seen your parents naked AND acting naturally at home before you're 4-5ish? Instead on accident they ran and hide (covered up immediately)?
Maybe that's where we differ. As a small child, I did see both my parents having a bath, coming out of the bathtub and instead of running and hiding or chasing me out just comfortably dried themselves.
Fear and frustrations of children are planted by grown-ups.

you write that like it is the majority of beaches is nudist, that’s far from true, they are the minority, and quite frankly having seen a few, they tend to be more full of middle aged to elderly , and yes out of shape and overweight people.

ive no idea why yoh wish to write or point out about a topless teenage girl. 🤮

do you see the contradiction in your own words? You enjoy social nudism but are not an exhibitionist?

Gettingbysomehow · 22/02/2024 07:29

I'm a member of a naturist club because it's a cheap country club basically.lovely pool, sunbathing, good company. I can go as a single woman and never be hassled. I'm not into the whole naturist lifestyle though and I don't go to events/holidays.

Fizbosshoes · 22/02/2024 07:33

We were cycling in Studland once and came across a nudist beach.
I would feel too self conscious to be nude in front of anyone in public....but I'm curious how nudists/naturists go about in the 90% of weather in the UK that is too cold to contemplate nudity !!

cerisepanther73 · 22/02/2024 07:43

@AllProperTeaIsTheft

Believe it or not

Just cause its nudist resort it doesn't have to be element of sex
as in your post implied to..

Nudists enjoy the freedom of being up close and personal with appreciating nature the environment
Feeling the sunshine 🌞 rays on them
socialising having a barbecue ect

People even do naturism on their own in their back gardens too...

All types of various figures, saggy ones, big small whatever in naturist resorts,

Ironically in our western societies

The obsession with sex

Or

implied sexual element to the most banal things such as TV adverts selling things ect

Pop videos or pop rock concerts stars dressed like allmost pornstars,

Hell even certain individuals, like Kashidan making starting her career off in a big way by her mother selling a sex video of her kashidan daughter sex session with her ex boyfriend...

There's no contradiction, that's all in your mind, I'm afraid.

Swimwear is a hard no-go in the Sauna. I only saw people wearing swimming costumes in saunas in Britain... If you want to cover up strictly zero plastic robe or towels.

I am a naked saunaer. I probably could be a nudist except I hate any kind of joining activity- don’t do clubs/group holidays/joining things ever! And my son would think it very odd if I started wandering around naked in public.

JL690 · 11/03/2024 14:53

I thought I'd give a quick update. I've gone to the session with my friend every week since the first time, apart from 1 week, and it has always been fun, comfortable and relaxing. It's a great way to end the week and sets me up for the week ahead.

These days you can wear virtually NOTHING on a beach. A thong will do! The whole “drying my swimwear quickly” is a ridiculous reason lol!

So naturalist beaches are catering for something else: either m who want to be naked for whatever random reason - and well-dodgy, deviant types.

Can’t understand why people would deliberately expose themselves (excuse pun) to the latter.

NexttoNothig · 11/03/2024 15:06

Even if the most basic tribes, men and women usually cover up their privates. So institutionalised nudism | naturalism is , I suspect, speaking m to something else in the modern psyche, very much.

MiddleagedBeachbum · 11/03/2024 15:09

I’ve mainly experienced it as festivals in the sauna areas where everyone is then naked.
found it really awkward at first then loved it!
far more liberating and freeing.
you see people in a different way and connect on a deeper level, it’s like you somehow stop seeing the body and see the soul and person inside

LlynTegid · 11/03/2024 16:34

@JL690 glad you are finding it good for you, no-one who wishes to remain clothed is there I assume.
