Nudists/Naturists

I have a friend who introduced me to life modelling last year and the same friend invited me to join her at a nudist/naturist evening at a swimming pool a few weeks ago. I went with her and found myself enjoying it, so I went with her last weekend too. There was quite a good balance between female/male attendees, which helped make it feel comfortable. So I am wondering if there is a fair number of nudists/naturists on Mumsnet too?

I am not going on the beach to watch other people or "show up", I go there to enjoy the beach, which consists of water, sand and sunshine(!), period. Creeping on other peoples clothing (or not clothing in this case) is at least rude in my book. There are FAR worse things in the world than seeing a human body.

Well of course there is far worse things , but that is a very low bar. Having walked past a couple of nudist beaches, I’m not gonna lie, it’s not pretty out there. And of course people look at each other and get looked at. You’re jot all there blind fold. And swimsuits are hardly the instruments of torture folks are making out,

JL690 · 20/02/2024 22:49

The replies to my question show that some of us are obviously comfortable being naked and some of us are not, some don't like the sight of nude bodies. That's all fine, we're all different, let's respect that and get on with life.

@GrumpyPanda I didn't know saunas had that effect in swimsuits 😬In that case it definitely makes sense to remove them before using a sauna.

Depends. A real hot sauna is not a good combination with a swimsuit for multiple reasons. A cost-saving hot room, I call the local one I stopped visiting, probably doesn't matter.
You can indeed cover up if you want: with a loose, 100% cotton robe or towel but not a tight, wet plastic swimming costume. A towel to sit on is an absolute must in busy places.

JL690 · 20/02/2024 22:55

@TheRareGreenBiscuit the place I've been going to gives everyone a towel and a sheet. Most people fold the sheet many times and use that to sit on.

I’ve been to a nudist spa

cant say I was particularly comfortable and just found it strange people chit chatting about weather, family, tv and politics in the nude and I tried not to look down. I’m only 5’2 so spent much of the time looking as though I had a bad neck

swimming with no clothes on is lovely preferably with just one other person around

Meh, I think you misunderstood, plenty of us are comfortable naked, and like the look of naked bodies very well. We aren’t all virgins posting. We don’t have sex in the dark.

The point is it’s we are uncomfortable getting with a group of strangers in a public place and getting naked together, as let’s face it, that’s what you are all doing.

we get naked, we get naked in front of others, we like the look of others naked, we are fully comfortable with this. We simply are uncomfortable doing it with strangers, in a public place.

Good practice. At one place we were given robes, very good thick but fully breathing material, zero plastic.

A sauna without swimwear, be it wrapped in or just sat on a towel, I find to be more comfortable. As is done in the Netherlands.

Only concern in the UK with such an approach is that it would attract men not there just for the comfort of a sauna.

There are plenty of pervs in the Netherlands, believe me.

It's more about accepting others choosing textile or not also in public where the law allows. Regardless what your own choice is and understanding that naturism has absolutely nothing to do with sexuality.

MinnieMountain · 21/02/2024 06:39

Spas in Switzerland are naked. It’s so much more comfortable.

I like the idea of swimming naked but my breasts jiggle too much. I find the idea fine on a quiet corner of a beach where a few people happen to be naked but wouldn’t go to a specific nudist place with lots of people.

Coincidentally · 21/02/2024 06:52

I am completely happy with being naked and swimming naked but really don’t want to chat naked to naked strangers-I do think that is weird /as for the barbecue aaaargh -gross!!!
went with a friend to a beach in Hastings and didn’t realise it was a nudist beach -basically lots of men posing and parading around for no reason and a few couples - seemed quite seedy -exhibitionists and couples there probably to give them something to talk dirty about later.

redskybluewater · 21/02/2024 07:43

I also would really enjoy swimming naked, although I have only even done topless. I love the water and sun and really don't like the restriction of swimming costumes so that's why I'd enjoy it.

I wouldn't particularly want to do any other activities besides swimming and lying down in the warmth without clothes on though. Possibly spa stuff, but definitely not day to day things, but am unbothered by anyone who does.

Lurkingandlearning · 21/02/2024 07:59

I used to enjoy wandering around the house naked. It was freeing and comfortable.

When I was taken to a nudist beach without warning, l was not prepared to get naked. I was hidden behind wind breaker so not “bothering” anyone else. The beach was almost empty anyway.

But I did see a fabulous woman striding along the shoreline wearing only a big wide brimmed hat. I still remember how wistfully envious I felt.

RampantIvy · 21/02/2024 08:08

It's a no from me. Having had treatment for BCC I now cover up in the sun. Clothes are much nicer than having to cover myself in factor 50 from head to toe.

JL690 · 21/02/2024 11:46

@Lurkingandlearning I can't afford the heating bill to be naked at home ❄, maybe something for the warmer months though. And I'd like to visit a beach too.

EBearhug · 21/02/2024 11:54

Surely the point of it is comfort? And that means the warmth of the sun, not hypothermia or drowning. <looks out at weather>

JL690 · 21/02/2024 11:57

Absolutely @EBearhug

I repeat what I said because that's my opinion. Most people look better with their clothes on.

Being naked feels so uncomfortable to me, everything hanging out unsupported! And wouldn't want to be around naked people leaking from their orifices 😂
But whatever makes people happy! We're all different

I don’t know… I think if you are in a sauna or steam room in swimwear, then shower and get in the pool or sit somewhere else, won’t the costume still be holding excretion/ sweat from leaking orifices? Whereas if you were naked the shower would have rinsed everything off?

Id never thought about that before!

So I am wondering if there is a fair number of nudists/naturists on Mumsnet too?

I’m an antisocial nudist. I like swimming naked but I do it in secluded spots where I’m unlikely to be watched or have to interact with anybody other than my husband.

The biggest issues I have had is when discovered by social nudists who think that just because I am naked I want the company of other naked people.

I don’t.

that’s it, you hit the nail on the head. It’s the wanting to be naked in public with strangers, even the op, she wants to find other folks on line , to talk about it.

its one thing to enjoy being naked, it’s the desire to do so with strangers in a public place that’s odd and quite prevalent in this community . The op doesn’t even walk around her own home alone naked, and she’s obviously lived many summers, but enjoys the public element of it.

Disturbia81 · 21/02/2024 18:32

@Theresstilltonighttocome That's very true with activities like that and costumes, though think fabric does still absorb most stuff in rather than it going on seats etc
Sorry I was more comparing nakedness with normal clothing, clothing being a barrier to smells and secretions. Can't imagine sitting/standing near naked people being able to smell them

Swimwear is a hard no-go in the Sauna. I only saw people wearing swimming costumes in saunas in Britain... If you want to cover up strictly zero plastic robe or towels.

AskingQuestionsAgain · 21/02/2024 22:28

But wouldn't you be way too hot in a sauna with a robe or towel on? A swimming costume is much lighter and thinner
