Full make up at the gym?

mixedmoomin · 13/02/2024 23:42

I recently joined a gym after many years of not going to one and running outside. I was surprised to go and see many women at the gym in full make up and hair done. I do not remember this being the case 10 or 15 years ago. It doesn't bother me at all to each their own but I just find it strange to be exercising with a full face on and your hair done. It also seemed like many were not actually doing much which is understandable as if they were sweating it would spoil their look. Is this a new thing?

As you say, each to their own.

Some people probably have a quick shower, touch up their makeup and away they go.

InsidiousRasperry · 13/02/2024 23:48

Each to their own, like you say.

If you are ending your day at the gym it would be a faff to lug skincare etc with you and try to take it all off at the tiny gym sinks! Easier to wait till you get home imo.

mixedmoomin · 13/02/2024 23:50

I suppose I don't wear much make up if at all and don't like the feeling of it on my skin and especially when exercising if I am actually working out properly then I'd sweat it off but I suppose if you are mostly standing about you won't sweat much at all, fine by me if they aren't sitting on and hogging the equipment which they don't seem to do. Its the guys that do that while they sit for ages between sets watching tiktoks!

I think most people do more in a day than just go to the gym. As in the make up was for their normal day just on purpose for the gym.

Not seen a make up bashing thread for a while though.

JaneLawrence · 13/02/2024 23:51

I’ve not noticed this at the gym I go to.

Redhothoochycoocher · 13/02/2024 23:51

I go to a women's gym and like pp have said start work there are people there wearing makeup. But what I've noticed more since Jan is teenage girls walking around in pairs in matching gym sets, slick hair not doing any exercise. All very posey.

mixedmoomin · 13/02/2024 23:52

I'm not bashing make up as such but it seems odd in the gym.

I’ve done it before when going after work. Why remove my makeup when my workout will do it for me 😂

Yes its exactly this! They aren't doing any exercise and their make up is not usual work make up but as if they are going on glitzy christmas night out!

I can totally understand that although I would probably remove mine before exercising but this is even early in the AM or on a saturday or sunday morning, I doubt its good for your skin!

Some people don't sweat however much they exercise. I don't at all, no matter how hard I work, far I run, how many miles I cycle. Nothing.

Who cares if people want to wear makeup. Maybe it helps their confidence.
Concentrate on your own workout and stop judging other people.

Whippetlovely · 13/02/2024 23:56

Your right a lot of people go to the gym just to post on insta that they are at the gym but don’t actually do any exercise. This really winds my dad up he’s always moaning these dinlos are sat on the bike taking pics of themselves and not doing any exercise. I don’t suffer these people as I go running outside , fresh air no one getting in my way much better than posers at gyms.

mixedmoomin · 13/02/2024 23:57

@ticktickticktickBOOM Is that you Prince Andrew 😂

God I always wear make up to the gym and have done for 35 years or so 🤷

Hotgirlwinter · 13/02/2024 23:59

Wear make up to the gym, work out pretty hard. Wear make up to run in usually as it’s quite often after work, my long runs on weekends not so much as it’s usually early.

Make up these days has a lot more staying power, you can also use setting sprays and powders which do not budge. Many lipsticks, mascaras, lip and cheek tints would not come off even in a swimming pool. They are removed with oil based cleansers.

But as you say, you don’t wear a lot so you wouldn’t really know this.

even if they are just “standing about” it is better they are in the gym than not, perhaps building confidence, perhaps happy to just mill about taking in the atmosphere and doing a light bit of resistance.

You do you OP, let us make up girls do us.

mixedmoomin · 14/02/2024 00:03

@Hotgirlwinter I was just curious, like I say most of these girls aren't working much anyway. It isn't that I think it will look bad but more that it appears to be bad for the skin according to dermatologists and it could be causing imperceptible damage which might not be noticeable now but may contribute to premature ageing of the skin in future. So I don't think its ideal by any means but as you say its not really any of my beeswax.

They’ve probably been wearing it all day. If they’ve just popped home to grab the gym bag, it doesn’t make sense for them to go through the faff of removing it. When they get home, they probably have a shower and are able to do their night face routine then

Really, a lot of people ey?

If they pay the same membership then there’s no problem surely.

Who knows why they wear makeup. I’ve worn makeup to the gym before and was pleased surprised how well it looked after my session was done. So who knows they may be working out very hard

theduchessofspork · 14/02/2024 00:13

I haven’t noticed it. - I mean other than people with make up they had on for work (I haven’t actually noticed that either but I don’t bother taking mine off so I’m sure other people don’t )

Eh? Why would not taking your blusher off cause premature aging.. this seems v far fetched

WestendGrrls · 14/02/2024 00:29

Maybe they are just on the pull?

As you said you don't know much about makeup so won't know that this actually isn't true. Makeup will not damage your skin, in fact quite the opposite as it does form a physical barrier to the sun and other pollutants.

DinnaeFashYersel · 14/02/2024 00:54

It always amazes me to see women topping up their mascara and lippy prior to working out.

It must be so bad for their skin.

And it's a bit sad they are so lacking in self confidence.

RockyRogue1001 · 14/02/2024 01:15

Bitchy, much?

Perhaps just concentrate on your own fitness/workout?

(I say this as a gym/exercise class regular who NEVER wears make up anyway)
