Full make up at the gym?

mixedmoomin · 13/02/2024 23:42

I recently joined a gym after many years of not going to one and running outside. I was surprised to go and see many women at the gym in full make up and hair done. I do not remember this being the case 10 or 15 years ago. It doesn't bother me at all to each their own but I just find it strange to be exercising with a full face on and your hair done. It also seemed like many were not actually doing much which is understandable as if they were sweating it would spoil their look. Is this a new thing?

If it makes them feel good it's fine by me.

polkadot24 · 14/02/2024 11:38

I go with my hair and make up done because I've got ready early in the morning, either worked all day or down school runs and errands etc and i have such a red face that I don't feel comfortable without makeup. I do see what you mean though, alot of young women seem to be thin and wear barely anything, look perfect but do nothing other than prance about, seemingly looking for attention 🤣

optionalnamechange · 14/02/2024 12:01

One of my best "gym friends" wears a full face makeup. She wouldn't leave the house under any circumstances without being fully made-up, I've never seen her bare even in her home. I've never noticed it run and she does work very hard in classes.
I did notice one time that Sports Direct were peddling sports proof makeup but no idea what it's like, maybe she uses similar.

Personally I may have turned up with makeup, etc. if I went to a class straight after work, no need to go home and remove it really. These days with WFH I never wear it. And I currently don't have any hair to "do" following chemotherapy, so I wear a beanie.

If I have make up on in the morning at the gym, it's generally the night before make up that I've not washed off.
I'm grotty.
Absolutely none of your business though. My wearing or not wearing make up should have zero effect on your work outs.

AuntieMarys · 14/02/2024 12:16

I never wear makeup to the gym as I do spin....sweat too much.

FrozenGhost · 14/02/2024 12:19

I don't wear make up to the gym but come on OP, you're concerned about "imperceptible damage to their skin"? Really??

CharlotteBog · 14/02/2024 12:29

My 14yo son goes to a gym after school. They have a youth session until 5pm, and it's very popular. They are quick to move on people who are not using the machines and/or posing around taking selfies.

EmpressaurusOfTheScathingTinsel · 14/02/2024 12:35

I’ve got no idea whether women at my gym wear makeup. I only notice people if they’re doing something I think I’d like to try or if they’ve got a better way of doing something & I want to copy it.

flutterby1 · 14/02/2024 12:58

Seems a bit unhygienic, sweaty make-up hope they shower it all off afterwards .

Aworldofmyown · 14/02/2024 13:09

My gym is like this, the girls are actually applying make- up in the changing room before they work out!! Very fancy gym outfits. Hair looking beautiful, tbh I'm jealous 😂
I think the lads look equally 'preened' though so I wonder if it's just the current place to meet people?

Foxblue · 14/02/2024 13:19

God, some horrible sneery comments on this thread.
I wear makeup because I enjoy wearing makeup. I wear nice gym gear because I like nice gym gear (and 'nice' just means 'all the same colour' in my world!)
I'm not lacking in self esteem - I am self conscious because I've has it ingrained into me since birth from every corner of society than I need to look a certain way and it's hard to shake off that conditioning even when you are very aware of how its a capitalistic patriarchal construct designed to keep women in their box, so when I'm in a situation where I'm feeling a little self conscious, like the gym (which I love and has worked wonders for my mental health) then if I feel a little more confident in makeup then I'll wear it.
I'm happy to see girls at the gym, even if they aren't doing much. They might be nervous about working out in front of others, they might be using it to socialise, they might be using it for social media pictures - who gives a fuck, as long as they aren't in my way and put the equipment back (which half the men at my gym don't do) then who cares.

TheFormidableMrsC · 14/02/2024 13:22

I've always worn make up to the gym. I just feel better with it on. Who cares 🤷🏻‍♀️

Wictc · 14/02/2024 13:29

I wouldn’t bother to take my make up off before the gym. I’ve no self esteem issues I’m aware of.

At what level are you allowed personal grooming before it becomes a self esteem issue? Filed nails, highlights, mascara, a top that isn’t a baggy t-shirt?

It really is a shame that so these women spend their time at the gym judging other women’s appearances rather than getting on with whatever they are doing. It would put a lot of people off going, especially a few women I know who feel too fat to been at the gym, I told them nobody cares what others look like. Seems I’m going to have to backtrack that statement!

TBF people should be showering after the gym anyways. Sweat smells when it dries, whether it's mixed with makeup or not.

CatamaranViper · 14/02/2024 13:41

The only time over ever really noticed someone else in the gym is when there was a fad for nude coloured leggings and I kept thinking there were naked people running around.

My best friend and I use the same gym and I don't even notice if she's in there, let alone if any random strangers in there are wearing makeup.

If I go straight from work I'll have my foundation, concealer, bronzer, blush, eyeshadow and mascara on. Sometimes even my lippy has stayed on too! I couldn't give a shiny shit. if I go in the morning I'll be showering after my workout anyways so no point in wasting good makeup.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 14/02/2024 15:03

I wouldn't wear make up specifically to go to the gym but if I come straight from work I would have it on

TorroFerney · 14/02/2024 15:08

Mine seems to be up your bottom leggings, huge water cups that won’t fit in the machines and extremely tight clothing, especially those lululemon type zip up jackets, trend seems to be to wear them a couple of sizes too small to hoik your boobs up. Oh and have your stuff in a little padded handbag. However they probably think Jesus look at that old woman when they see me who makes no effort and has tops that are older than some of them. They aren’t it seems to me trying to diet themselves away to nothingness which must be a good thing.

what both sexes do seem to do is get off the running machine before it’s come to a standstill, disaster waiting to happen!

The fact they have make up on at the gym is no indication they shower or not after, the two are totally unrelated. Make up can be reapplied. People can have it on for things they did before the gym. They may simply feel more confident in it.

it is no one’s business, how someone chooses to present and the worst people, as witnessed by this thread, is women judging other women for their choices.

what a horrible thought, you go to the gym and instead of working out, some women are eyeing up and down other women and judging them for their choices. Appalling.

EarringsandLipstick · 14/02/2024 15:18

I workout at 6 am so I don't wear makeup then, and the studio is usually dark.

However at weekends when I train later I usually have light foundation, concealer, powder, bronzer, eyebrows tidy & mascara. I feel better.

Rubbish about you can't work hard wearing makeup - I do! Or that it damages your skin - obviously shower & cleanse properly.

So many judgy, sneering, informed posts here

EarringsandLipstick · 14/02/2024 15:18

@Frasers

Another great post.

💯 agree

Nowmum43 · 14/02/2024 15:26

I will have make up on if I go straight from work. I seem to be the only person who leaves with a red face, sweating and my hair a soggy limp mess🤣 everyone else looks so bloody glamorous post workout 🤦🏻‍♀️

TheChosenTwo · 14/02/2024 15:32

There’s a lot of posing going on a my gym but they’re at the mirrors and I don’t go anywhere near those 😂 Not sure about the makeup as I tend to me in my own little world once I get started and I’m not close enough to anyone else.
I don’t wear much makeup and only bother with it very occasionally as I find it’s too high maintenance and I’m clumsy so would end up swiping half of it off and not noticing etc, but if I were popping home before going I’d take it off. Sweating with makeup on makes me think of all those pores getting clogged!

PinkEasterbunny · 14/02/2024 15:34

I never leave the house without a touch of make-up (I look like I've been exhumed otherwise) so I generally look presentable at the gym, no matter which end of the day it is. But its only the very young girls who are really done up
