Full make up at the gym?

I recently joined a gym after many years of not going to one and running outside. I was surprised to go and see many women at the gym in full make up and hair done. I do not remember this being the case 10 or 15 years ago. It doesn't bother me at all to each their own but I just find it strange to be exercising with a full face on and your hair done. It also seemed like many were not actually doing much which is understandable as if they were sweating it would spoil their look. Is this a new thing?

I used to do a sweaty class after work. I'd get dressed at the office and rush out. It never occurred to me to remove my make up or un "do" my hair. I have no idea if it wore off as I was going home and not looking in the mirror.

I now go in the morning straight from my pit so have none as I obv have a nighttime routine.

If I was doing weights and already had make up on, I wouldn't see any reason to remove even if I wasn't in a rush as it wouldn't sweat off from weights. I would only now remove it from seeing the weird look when I've sweated and towel rubbed half of it off from intense cardio.

I'm a make up person. Doesn't mean I have low self confidence or am ruled by makeup. It's just about what's easiest or makes the most sense.

Floralsofa · 14/02/2024 02:44

I powerlift 5 times a week, not an overly feminine sport and I don't go to the gym to pose and look good. I do however wear a full face of makeup and do my hair every day, why would I take it off for the gym?

bradpittsbathwater · 14/02/2024 02:51

I would never remove my makeup before the gym. What a waste of time. How sad you would even notice.

I've not long started at the gym in desperate need of shifting a stone. Loving it so far, despite major imposter syndrome fear and lack of confidence in gym gear.

I do wear a 'face', because I wear one every day, and I certainly wouldn't go home before the time I can fit the gym in to take it off. I don't just 'stand around', either, I work to MY abilities.

I put it off for such a long time in fear of being judged by the gym bunnies and it seems I was right. Some do. Funny because I've never noticed who is wearing makeup, because I'm concentrating on me.

sorestupid · 14/02/2024 03:34

I always thought it was better for your pores to be make up free when you work out? if going after work I generally would have some make up on but not foundation or concealer as I don’t use them much.

MissTrip82 · 14/02/2024 05:45

You can’t be working too hard if you can observe all of this……

This isn’t new, I remember similar unpleasant threads dripping with scorn for other women years ago.

@Hotgirlwinter I was just curious, like I say most of these girls aren't working much anyway. It isn't that I think it will look bad but more that it appears to be bad for the skin according to dermatologists and it could be causing imperceptible damage which might not be noticeable now but may contribute to premature ageing of the skin in future. So I don't think its ideal by any means but as you say its not really any of my beeswax.

Edited

How is it bad for their skin if they wash it off before going to bed? That’s nothing whatsoever to do with being at the gym.

You’re completely right it’s none of your beeswax what anyone else does, or wears at the gym, makeup, clothing or anything else - maybe spend more time doing whatever you’re at the gym to do and less time nosing at everyone else :)

It’s pretty laughable that you’re judging how much exercise you think they’re doing when you seem to be spending an inordinate amount of time watching everyone else & not doing any exercise yourself 🤣

Makes no difference to their workout. Maybe they've come straight from the office. A very non event

strawberryandtomato · 14/02/2024 05:55

Also why are you watching their workout? People like you who judge others in the gym is not okay! Did you focus on any men doing their workout?

Submariner · 14/02/2024 06:00

Strange that so many people are saying they see women standing around posing. At my gym I'm struck by how many women are doing really impressive workouts lifting stuff that I can only dream of. And as for it being younger women on Instagram instead of working, it's usually the younger women who seem to get there and know exactly what they're doing and are well into the parts of the gym that used to be full of men 10 years ago.

Haven't looked at anyone's face close enough to notice if they're wearing makeup. Don't begrudge anyone a matchy matchy gym outfit to be fair. There have always been people who like to buy all the bonafide clothes around a hobby and those who don't.

SilverDrawer · 14/02/2024 06:25

I go to gyms in a city known for a glam look, and there are loads of young women in tiny shorts and loads of makeup, but they work hard at the gym. The look you can achieve by weight training is fashionable at the moment. Which I think is a great thing.

I am ancient, but still always wear makeup to the gym, though not the full glam look the youngsters favour.

MyBigFatGreekSalad · 14/02/2024 06:31

Maybe they've just come straight from work?
Maybe it makes them feel good about themselves?

You can't be doing too much either if you're noticing other womens workout routines😂 when I'm in the gym i pay zero attention to others in there.

Justleaveitblankthen · 14/02/2024 06:31

mixedmoomin · 13/02/2024 23:53

Yes its exactly this! They aren't doing any exercise and their make up is not usual work make up but as if they are going on glitzy christmas night out!

And then they head to the jacuzzi in matching thong bikinis. I swim up and down and it relieves the boredom watching all the blokes (old enough to be their father) try desperately not to stare 😂

Also remember that most of them use the gym/changing rooms/pool for their selfies and social media.

popncrisps · 14/02/2024 07:46

It seems bonkers to me too - I can understand a flick of mascara or whatever but one lady who comes to my gym classes has clearly done a wash/blow dry and full face of makeup beforehand. She also wears a jaunty neck scarf! I go home and get straight in the shower so don't see the point 🤷🏼‍♀️

Pickingmyselfup · 14/02/2024 08:08

There are a handful of occasions in several years I have purposely put on some mascara, concealer and maybe a blob of colour on my face pre gym. Usually when I'm feeling particularly good and want a bit of a glow. I wouldn't do a full face or anything that would smear. The only time that is the case is when I've gone straight after work and haven't taken my makeup off.

I really need to get a decent setting spray actually, can anyone recommend one?

Changingplace · 14/02/2024 08:48

But you have no idea what she’s been doing before she comes to the class? Most people don’t just go to a gym class during their day, it’s more likely to be something they fit in after work/something else.

She probably does go home and get in the shower too, unless your class is at 6am it’s likely not the only thing she’s done.

Changingplace · 14/02/2024 08:52

You know what’s really sad about this thread, so many times I’ve seen women post who haven’t been to the gym before or plucking up the courage to back and they’ll get tonnes of replies saying ‘oh nobody takes any notice of what other people look like/wear etc at the gym, I’m just there to do my workout’

Yet sadly it appears there’s loads of women who actually are giving other women a judgy once over because they can’t bloody help themselves. What a disappointment that is :(

Boooooooooooo · 14/02/2024 08:54

You must spend a lot of your workout looking at the make up of other people and their workout regimes.

maybe concentrate on your own workout.

Frasers · 14/02/2024 08:55

God I have been to the gym bare faced to full make up. Usually the latter after work.

please stop looking at and judging other women, just focus on your workout.

God what a bitchy comment. Eurgh.

SilverDrawer · 14/02/2024 09:00

@Pickingmyselfup i now do a one layer make up thing: blob the stuff on, spray with Elf setting spray, then blend. Works really well even in very high intensity combat sport (yes, I wear makeup to that too! 😂)

WithIcePlease · 14/02/2024 09:06

Judge away

I will wear a full face of make, esp if I'm dropping in somewhere on the way home - and no I'm not going home and showering first as I don't sweat. It would also mean another 30 mins + of driving.

I sometimes take selfies too because I like a record of my muscle development (and I love the look when I have a pump!).

I actually DO look at others in the gym - I found it really useful when I first started before I had a trainer. Seeing different exercises, the attachments for cables used etc was really helpful.

I love a matching gym set and also have different Metcons to match different colourways!

Late 50's if that's relevant.

RicePuddingWithCinnamon · 14/02/2024 09:11

I don’t wear much makeup because mine never lasts the whole day. What brand are people wearing that’s lasting a gym session at the start of the day?!
If that’s you please can you tell me the brand. I might treat myself.
Thanks 🥰

SilverDrawer · 14/02/2024 09:16

I do an elf primer, then dot on this: concealer, IT your skin but better CC+ cream, bit of a Huda long last foundation, spray with the setting spray and blend. Tiny bit of liquid bronzer and blusher. Sometimes a touch of powder. The L’Oréal cheap waterproof mascara in the blue tube is outstanding. Cream lip colour blended in. Takes about five minutes.

Kerfuffleplunk · 14/02/2024 11:18

OP@mixedmoomin I totally agree, sadly some women just can’t physically leave the house without a full face of make up , it’s so sad, my own daughter feels she has to wear some make up but it’s solely down to lack of self-esteem. That said, so many women stop doing physical exercise in their teens so I suppose it’s good at least they are doing something!
